Equity Research and Accounting
I am in my 4th year of undergrad studying finance and accounting and have been very interested in investment analysis for years. From what I have experienced so far, my accounting classes have been much more helpful in learning how to better analyze potential investments. Because of this I am strongly considering pursuing a master of accounting (MSA) degree and taking the CPA (in addition to the CFA). I believe this will really help me be able to analyze a business from the inside out and understand everything that is going on.
Since coming up with this plan numerous peers and recent graduates have told me this is a bad idea. I have been told such things as, "it won't be relevant," and "it will isolate me as an accountant." I was wondering if anyone in the industry can give me their opinion on my potential plan and whether they think it is a good idea.
Thanks alot,
Josh
Just...no.
take the GMAT
Wasn't this thread posted like a week ago? deja vu..
it's one thing to study accounting as an undergrad, but it's another to get a masters in accounting. while accounting is a crucial skill and building block in finance, you will send ppl in finance a mixed message as to what your true passion and long term career path is. you are really risking pigeon-holing your career. think about it very carefully if finance is what you really want to do.
yeah id have to agree with the above posts. A Masters in Acct is a big4 exit, not a bank, pwm, eq res. While some may get in, it's the exception rather than the norm. I'd talk to other people in equiy research and get their opinions. If you can't get in, work somewhere else that's a somewhat feeder to eq res, a specific industry that you want to follow as an analyst potentially, take the gmat and goto a top b-school, and then get in. HBS and Stanford accept students much younger these days, so your time pre mba is highly shortened, and HBS/Stanford will most def allow you to walk onto most eq res shops.
Of course socola, because it is so incredibly easy to get into HBS/Stanford...
I did this path 4 years ago. Probably the worst mistake of my life. I was lucky to get into a top MBA (and trying to switch over) and still feel the lingering effects of being branded as an accountant.
Go do banking, suck it up for a couple years, look back at your life and pat yourself on the back when you land your ideal job.
what was the mistake? getting a Masters in Acc, or a CPA?
Professionals in ER with Accounting or Finance Backgrounds? (Originally Posted: 02/24/2016)
Hello, was wondering if anyone could provide some transparency on ER individuals. Do most of them have an accounting background and go right into ER after college? or do most have a finance background and go from IB into ER...thoughts? I'm a double major in both but am thinking about going Big 4 route and then switching into ER...good idea??
