Wells Fargo, RayJay and Harris Williams all have stronger brand names than BB&T. Can't speak a ton about SunTrust but if you're looking mid-market PE you're better off with one of the ones I mentioned.
I'm pretty sure SunTrust is much better than BB&T. They've been around longer and have a strong base in the south.
Pay at suntrust is street (or at least old street) @ $60K + $5K signon. No idea about end of year bonuses, I'd suspect $15K-$25K would be reasonable considering Atlanta is dirt cheap.
Anyone else?
Although you don't see either firm on a lot of tombstones, I'd say (100% qualitatively, I don't have league tables in front of me) that I have seen SunTrust on more. Take my qualitative feel for as little as it may be worth, though.
Is it me or does anyone think SunTrust fly under the radar?
I looked through linkedin purely out of curiosity and noticed they've gotten multiple analysts into HBS, Wharton and Kellogg (in fact, quite a few into Kellogg) - They also seem to place a fair few in solid upper MM PE.
I'd be really interested to hear bonus numbers if anyone knows them, I would guess at 15-25 but that's a pure guess.
60k with 15-20 bonus is horse shit... If that's what Suntrust pays, no way would you want to do that unless that's all you could get. RJ is in atlanta and pays more. Charlotte shops like lazard, jefferies, and wells all pay street salary. Know some of them are paid bonuses in the 50/60 range. Heard jefferies works you like 120 though and people quit early and if you do go there, it's all consumer/retail.
and fuck the guy above- nascar is obviously the greatest sport of all time, hence its #1 spectator sport rating.
His name is jimbo... sounds like he drinks his own coolade
From what I heard, SunTrust pays 65 base with a 12-15 sign on bonus. They are growing really fast and raised their comp to attract better talent. Source is a buddy of mine who is an 2nd yr analyst there. Not sure what bonuses are there but im guessing ~50%.

SunTrust and BB&T (Originally Posted: 04/18/2009)
Hello guys,
I have been browsing the forums for a while and finally decided to sign up and ask a question.
I am currently targeting SunTrust and BB&T to start a career in investment banking. They are realistically my best choices as I am from a state school with a sub par GPA and no connections in wall street.
I am wondering what kind of exit opportunities could come out of such regional banks and whether or not it would be possible to "leverage" my experience in these banks to move into a larger bank on wall street or north Carolina for that matter.
PS - I have read enough to know what the bonuses or lack thereof are like, thanks
....
I was under the impression that BofA and Wachovia were in the big league and recruiting was just as hard as wall street firms.
help?
I don't know enough about either of these banks, but they're known entities in the middle-market space. I work at a large MM PE fund and we see these guys' names come up every so often, and we also use their equity research from time to time.
Perhaps someone else can shed more light on culture, compensation, exit opportunities, and so forth.
SunTrust Robinson Humphrey - Suggestions? (Originally Posted: 02/09/2012)
Silly question, but I'm interested in joining SunTrust Robinson Humphrey. I've applied to a position in S&T, but after speaking with someone from outside of the bank, I got the impression that their HR division doesn't place more weight on people who are referred by someone from the inside vs. someone else who isn't referred by someone from within.
So that's my problem. I really want to work for them, but I feel as though in light of the above, I don't have much of a way in other than applying online. The frustrating part is that I do know someone who knows someone at SunTrust, but in light of the above, it's like it may not carry much weight.
For anyone who has successfully gained employment at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, do you have any suggestions?
Thank you.
I've heard the exact same thing, but it has to be worth a shot.
Regards
nothing to add other than i have heard/experienced the same thing. I had a pretty decent referral and no interview.
Its always worth a shot. I saw they were recruiting on another campus (not my university) and I called their HR, told them I knew that I was qualified and would be a solid candidate. She signed me up for an interview immediately. Might try to call them...it worked for me.
If you have a current employee pushing for you in relation to OCR you will most likely be able to secure a first round interview, at that point it is really up to the candidate to be able to seal the deal.
If you would like additional color or information feel free to PM me, have some familiarity with the process. To summarize, I couldn't disagree more with the OP, a personal connection within is pretty key.
