URGENT QUESTIONS:

Hi all,

So here is my situation:

Accepted a FT offer starting in July. I am walking in May, but will be taking one last summer course ending at the end of June (a science requirement). After several discussions with the registrar, I was just told today that my degree would not be confirmed/conferred until SEPTEMBER. Even though all of my requirements will be met prior to my start date, I won't receive an official degree until September.

Is this going to be a problem? What did they ask for when you started? Just a transcript or the actual degree?

Obviously, I've called HR -- but I'm not expecting a call back until a few hours from now or possibly tomorrow... and I'm kind of bugging out.

Please give me some feedback.

HerSerendipitywe were asked to bring our final official transcript and a copy of our diploma.

We had to bring our graduation cap

I had to bring a videotape showing me walking up and accepting the diploma.

Just get a letter from the school stating what happened, that's what HR will prolly say. I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm trying to be calm, but it is hard not to assume the worst and worry.

Anyone have experience doing a summer class during your last summer?

Thanks a lot...

nystateofmindQuestion - how are they letting you walk w/o actually completing your degree?

a lot of schools let you do this. i even know people who walked at graduation but then ended up staying an entire extra yr afterwards

Are you the only person from your school who's starting at the firm you got offer? can you explain why you have to take that course over the summer (instead of spring)? will you have a complete transcript to hand in when you start training in july? the best thing you can do is ask for a written letter from your registrar and/or advisor stating that you did graduate, just not getting the official diploma until sept. good luck to you.

No, I'm not the only person at my school starting at the firm.

I'm double majoring. Took max course load this semester (overload) and the summer course is a requirement. My transcript will be COMPLETE UPON STARTING. But they only "confirm" graduation 3 times a year, mine would be in September due to the summer course.

Does this help anything? Thanks a lot...

Ok. if it's complete, it's better. does your school's transcript state your actual degree? if not, then how are they going to find out? by the time they question anything, you already graduate, so it's shouldn't be a problem. when i started my analyst program (i'm in s&t), we were only asked to bring the transcript, not copy of the diploma or anything. my concern is they might use this as an excuse if they over hire. maybe it would be easier if you tell us which school/firm?

When you filled out your background check paper work did you have to sign a transcript release form? If so they probably already received your unofficial transcript - does your unofficial transcript say you are grad. in May or Sep??

  1. This is not at all "urgent". Certainly not enough to warrant a title in all caps.
  2. There is nothing that anyone on this board can say that will change what HR will say.
  3. You will know the answer when you hear back from HR. There is no reason to cross-post your question here.

Honestly, this forum has become a haven for overly neurotic and anally-retentive kids.

I have to agree, there are some things not worth worrying about.

Maslow, don't worry...this happened to me as well. I had an offer to join Deutsche Bank in their New York office. If I were you, I would approach your dean and ask for an explanatory letter. HR should accept this as a valid explanation. Try to get his seal and make it look as official as possible and get him to explain the situation. In special circumstances, he also has the power to grant you an advanced degree even without completing your degree if you are passing your last class. This should help you circumvent any problems, VCMonkey

You said you have to take this class in June? Is it a condensed number of weeks? When is the class over? Will it be over before your start date in July?

Believe it or not, this actually happened to me. I walked commencement in May. A final grade didn't post for a science class until the Fall. The professor went on medical leave and final grades were derailed. Anyways, when I submitted my transcripts to start my new job in the Fall, my transcripts said my degree had not been conferred yet. I didn't realize it until my employer brought it to my attention. The same day I had to high tail it to the Registrar's office. They kindly wrote a letter confirming I have satisfied all the credit requirements of my degree etc., they stamped it, sealed it and I hand delivered it to my employer the same day. No issue whatsoever.
