What are my chances ? Some direction/advice would be good
Here's the deal. I'm interested in starting a career in finance investment (alternative investment). I need your input: is it even possible for me to do this given my background, what fields/direction should I aim for, and what can I do to maximize my chances of getting a job or internship?
here are my stats:
Rutgers University recent graduate (May 2010), honors program, 3.6 GPA (cum laude), BA in econ and political science.
SAT: 1600/1600
Experience: I got started late (no internship experience during college), and I just finished a four month internship in Healthcare IT. It was a bit like consulting (boss was a former consultant), I did a lot of market research/company profiling, data analysis and presentation, modeling (revenue modeling of potential future projects), spreadsheet construction, and I used Excel and Access a great deal.
I want to land an internship at a smaller hedge fund / private equity fund or some kind of research position.
Basically, I have what it takes but I'm a bit of a raw product lacking credentials.
Thoughts? Give it to me honest. I am a bit lost right now applying for jobs and could use some direction.
Some employers weight grades very heavily. So maybe you can go somewhere with what you have.
Good luck on your hunt.
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. I'd love any other opinions as well.
It's all about transferable skills - especially if you do have a modeling background, albeit in another field. Marketing yourself to recruiters is key. Your 3.6 cum laude helps as well.
I myself am a 2009 graduate of Rutgers-Econ major. Finding non-Operations experience out of our college can be difficult, so network network network. I am now working for a $10B hedge fund. Best of luck with your search!
That is certainly reassuring to hear. If I may ask, what tools did you use to land your job? Did you use the alumni network at all? I have tried in the past to reach out to alumni through LinkedIn with no responses.
I am thinking of cold calling small firms (I have an enormous list of hedge funds) and making my pitch, in addition to networking.
Thanks for the advice!
I am open to all forms of advice and criticism from anyone, be brutally honest.
GPA is solid as is your SAT score. I'd make sure to bring attention to both on your resume.
I'd network my ass off, make sure your resume is very solid, polished and you've gotten feedback/comments from alot of current bankers so its in top form.
My biggest piece of advice to you is... DO NOT EVER EVER EVER say you interned in IT. Especially considering what you described it as does not at all sound like IT. Spin it/frame it to make it most marketable for the positions to which you're applying. Don't blatantly lie, but frame it in a way that works to your advantage.
