Summoned to Jury Duty right in middle of S&T internship

So I just got the letter in the mail that summons me to jury duty june 20th, right in the middle of a S&T internship I have. How can I get out of it? Are students exempt? Someone was telling me you're allowed to miss one if you have a good reason.

I've gotten this before, too. You'll hear before whether or not you'll actually have to go -- you should get a phone number on there that you'll call on a specified day. I had one summons when I was getting ready to take finals in undergrad, and they were pretty lenient with it -- I'd imagine that they might be flexible with an internship but it's hard to say.

Happened to me, explained the situation (still in uni and on an internship) and they got me out of it. Worth giving them a call.

Jack: They’re all former investment bankers who were laid off from that economic crisis that Nancy Pelosi caused. They have zero real world skills, but God they work hard. -30 Rock

Yup. Same thing for me as well. I said I would be more than happy to serve and asked if I could do it at x time. If you get a bitchy person, just call back another day to see if you get someone else. They should let you off as long as you agree to go next time you are called.

You're a junior. If you just got a jury duty notice, I find it hard to believe that it will conflict with recruiting considering it's September.

Someone I know did his IB SA stint in his home city and had to take two days off of work during the summer because of jury duty (he got the offer).

did he put it on his resume?

I've successfully postponed three times. My first summons was freshman year. To this day I'm still postponing.

At this point I don't think you can. Usually when you get the summons there are some options on the back for reasons to opt out. I'd be VERY careful about trying to get the judge to disqualify you. If the judge catches you, you can be held in contempt of court/charged.

I already put it off for 6 months. They won't let me any more. And I wasn't doing anything ridiculous. I think I'll be fine.

If you have children they may exempt you depending on your state. If not, there is no reason that your boss should not give you time off. If they don't notify the clerk of court, and your boss could go to jail for contempt of court.

I just don't want to do it. I don't even have a job.

I don't advocate getting out of jury duty, but if you have to, defense attorneys and prosecutors don't like wild cards. In other words, they generally like people who dress like bankers on the jury, and they generally dislike having people wearing anti-establishment t-shirts on the jury.

So I am going to encourage you to do your civic duty, show up wearing a suit and a tie, so you can be selected for the jury.

OP is probably trolling us. But I am going to keep on pretending like that's not the case just to frustrate him. Everyone else should, too, because trolling a troll is fun.

OP, just tell the prosecutor that you're unemployed. He'll just use one of his juror kick-out cards to get you off the trial. Done.

Why would I be trolling? Jury duty sucks. And why would they not take an unemployed student?

idk the laws of your city, assuming NYC, but when I was summoned, I called and told them I am still a student, then they excused me.

I was on a jury once. You gotta hope you get the people who try and defend themselves. Those are the most fun.

sleepyguybShow up and claim to have a racist/religious/some other bias against the defendent and leave? You still waste half a day.
My Friend actually tried this but the Judge justified that If he is racist against everybody then he will treat everybody equally. Needless to say he was selected for the jury.

meaning even the biggest BSD can't do anything but follow the law. Try to get out of it, but if you can't nothing the firm can do to penalize you.

You'll be able to postpone your service (for one year, I believe) from your date of summons. With luck, when the summons comes a year later, you'll be in another state working for a top PE firm. ;)

Just ask if the judge knows who you are. As soon as he finds out you are an investment banker he will surely realize how important you are and dismiss you.

I'm pretty sure different states have different levels of enforcement of jury duty. I know in some states if your boss writes a letter, you get out of it and you can just keep doing this as many times as you want. However, in other states, you can only get out of it once and then the next time you're called, you have no choice but to go, even if you're CFO of a Fortune 500 company (this actually happened at a company I worked for).
