not sure if it would be that wise. you do two years of monkey work at a BB you're just about to get promoted (and have someone else do the monkey work for you) you leave to become an entry level monkey at MBB

Yeah, you would definitely join as an analyst, but might have a different track. It's tough to lateral to these places for those roles, espec BCG/McK because their classes are so small. MBA->Consultant is a better option. Or you could look into some of their specific openings in case you fit their qualifications.

GS is definitely a good stamp on your resume and it has a weight in the eyes of recruiting departments of MBB. I don't see any reason why you wouldn't make it. I think you may incur the risk of losing a bit of seniority in the career change (i.e. they may give you only 1 year of seniority and you may be joining as analyst 2nd year).

having lateraled from another consulting firm to MBB with a very transferable skill-set, i have some insight for my firm at least.

less than 2 years - start from scratch

2-3 years - potential if you wow your interviewers to start between entry tier and 2nd tier (post-MBA) with a fast-track promotion option, but otherwise possibility that you start from scratch

3+ - not really sure...
