What do you think of the political talk show Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO? I don't really have a lot of time to watch TV, but I almost always watch this show, my favorite one. I do not agree with him on every point, but he is really a funny guy, isn't he? anyone agrees or disagrees?

I find him really funny, but sometimes he is way out of his league on certain topics. He is a master of hyperbole, but he does good interviews and gets some interesting guests.
Prepare to get flamed though - I highly doubt he is well liked on these boards.

He's funny until he shows his typical ignorance regarding Christianity and other religions. Just because you were "raised Catholic" doesn't mean you know anything about the Bible, etc.
It's funny to see this posted... I happened to see Religulous last night, and thought it was great. I had never really seen too much of Bill Maher, but I must say that watching him cooly interact with the crazy religious people, on their turf, was pretty entertaining. I am glad I saw it because I live in a bubble and forget that people care about religion, and even make decisions based on it... What a shocker lol.
Might be willing to watch a little more of the guy.
P.S. I was so happy for some reason when I saw George W. Bush! Miss that dude sometimes. The big grin, et al. Watching him squint his eyes really hard and trembling while "praying" was funny, but also disturbing after a moment... He was our President lol.
I liked the movie but I find that Maher is not very intelligent and his love of hyperbole kind of kills his message. If you want an intelligent commentary on the state of religion, especially in the US, I suggest Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss. Both are scientist, a biologist and a physicist, and articulate and intelligent without going over the top like Maher. You can find tons of their stuff on youtube. I suggest starting with this.
I see what you mean about the hyperbole, I did find that irritating at times. He goes too far with it in normal conversation and the people he's talking to get lost. I'm not looking to see people be made to look foolish, that wasn't fun.

I think he is a dullard. He lacks critical thinking on everything he comments on. He appears to be intelligent to his target audience, who believe themselves to be intelligent but often that is not the case.
I love him; my wife hates him. His show causes much strife in our house.

I watch his show from time to time and I find that he suffers from the same things that all shows on MSNBC suffer from. It is a far left show for far left people with no desire for rationale debate or discussion of meaningful topics; it is simply a podium for him to spew bullshit declarative statements and call them "facts" since there is no one on the show to say otherwise.
Fox may be right of center, stoop to the level that far left shows do and do a far better job debating arguments. I encourage people to watch 2-3 days of Fox News- The Five, O'Reilly, or Hannity---the farthest right show on Fox. I especially recommend O'Reilly.
Things you will notice, there is almost always 2 guests in addition to the host, one of the right and one of the left, or the debate will be the host against a person on the left. You watch Bill Maher and the panel is either 3 liberals all agreeing with him or 2 liberals and 1 person on the right that is an extremely weak debater and they just take turns ignoring him or making fun of him. I don't know how many times I have watched Maher and thought of dozens of counter arguments, facts, and/or additional questions to his so called "facts", but of course the person on the right never brings it up and if Maher ever happens to be losing a debate and he knows it he will quickly change the topic or run out of time--seen it happen at least twice.
The other point is that Fox always tries to debate the actual topic--facts consequences, whatever. Maher will typically attack people on a personal level--calling them idiots racists, rather than debate the actual facts.
As for Maher being funny, he can be funny at times, but I find that his cruelty to people who have a differing point of view to be overpowering and I honestly believe that a lot of his "jokes" aren't really jokes to him.
I sometimes watch Real Time. It's a mixed bag. As a firmly secular person, religion-bashing doesn't really bother me. He overgeneralizes (you are either an atheist or Rick Santorum), but he's a comedian.
Like Gekko, my chief complaint is that he always falls back on the "conservatives are dumb" and "conservatives live in a bubble" tropes. He demeans conservative guests. I get it - you're liberal - but at least respect the people on your show.
I actually think Jon Stewart is a better host for this reason. He has conservative guests on his show, but doesn't harass them any more than he does liberals.
Well sure, Jon Stewart is WAAY funnier. Maher doesn't have a self deprecating bone in his body.
Kudos to him just because of his affinity for scrumptious black women.
He sucks. He's obsessed with himself and arrogant to the max. He constantly demeans anyone who disagrees with him and states his opinions as facts.
He is a piece of garbage.
I think he is great. I am pretty conservative (libertarian actually), but I find his humor hilarious. Real time is a great show.
I watch every now and then but honestly he just doesn't care when he starts going into a ridiculously ignorant tirade about something. I agree with him on a decent number of issues, but he honestly isn't interested in being logical.

I can't stand the guy after Religulous, and I'm not religious by any means. I just have no respect for somebody who's idea of a "debate" is to cut people off and end the scene before they even have a chance to put together a coherent response. Being loud doesn't make you smart nor right.
Of course, that's assuming a coherent response is forthcoming. Not exactly a safe assumption with that crowd.
