Cubicle Essentials?
What do you keep in your cubicle (other than the usual IB stuff)?
Me: Starbucks Double Shot. I find this tastier than Red Bull. I usually keep 5-10 cans.
iPod Touch. Music: Radiohead/Curren$y/Kanye West. Games: Tap Tap (I whoop ass at this)/Minigore (Unlocked all characters)/Doodle Jump. Also the most useful thing during bathroom break next to toilet paper.
Pillow (working on getting a blanket though). I place this thing on my desk, and drift into a sea of dreams (or nightmares), mostly about my MD. Sleeping on the floor sucks.
Red Bull. For when I don't have any Starbucks Double Shot.
Adderall. I don't use it, but other analysts do.
Candy. For those tough times. Fuzzy peaches are a must. Eat slowly, and quietly though, lest you share with coworkers.

I'll be starting off at a BB in June, and was wondering what some of you think are essential items, or just handy shit in general, to keep in your cube that aren't necessarily work related (items like headphones, advil, toothbrushes...)
As an I banker, lots of pussy will be thrown your way, it is your job to protect yourself, and your firm from any sticky situations.
lol... i'm guessing you're still in highschool, pussy don't get thrown that way unless it's from cougars
I used to keep a pillow, a blanket, a full change of clothes, including a belt and a tie, and a pack of redbulls. Everything else is pretty standard.
as a first year analyst? always have your desk stocked with snacks. at some places its expected of you as an analyst duty, at other places the md's will just love you for it. (or hate you for not having candy when they need their sugar fix)
very true, during my SA stint one MD was notorious for favoring the SAs who gave him candy on a regular basis.
Eye drops, long hours in front of a screen with no sleep can be painful.
Nice headphones (maybe noise canceling) for when you need to focus despite everyone else screwing around next to you.
Also, since you'll end up eating at your desk a lot, I always kept several sets of plastic silverware, napkins, and some ketchup packets, etc.
Your cube essentially becomes your home away from home (or perhaps it's your apartment that actually fills that role). So anything to make it more comfortable.
Speak for yourself Chiang.
If you're in any type of trading capacity, it's essential to keep your passport and a bottle of the alcohol of your choice in your top desk drawer. Trust me on this one.
really good headphones...when you need to crank and there are tons of shenaningans around you
gum/mouthwash/something really funny to keep you sane/snacks/pictures of you on spring break to realize that you at one point at a life and no longer do in banking
I keep a toothbrush and toothpaste.
Painkillers....
Blow
in addition to painkillers, i keep other meds that may come in handy, such as dayquil, antacids, cough suppressants etc. i hate being sick at work so i pop pills as soon as i feel even slightly under the weather - it's good to have such pills at your disposal.
also, snacks are key.
hand lotion and porno mags
Think about your cube as you would an airplane. So, anything you would put in a travel bag, toothpaste, tooth brush, hair brush, floss, deodorant, various pills, etc. Also, keep some finance related magazines around, headphones, other things to keep busy that look work related. In terms of clothing, extra shirt, a few ties, and a change of shoes.
Basically, you can end up with lots of down time, so plan accordingly, also you could end up stranded for days on end, also plan accordingly.
Make sure you get a cubical mirror for your monitor as well so you can see people sneaking up on you.
I'd definitely have some metal, NOT PLASTIC, silverware. It's a lot more comfortable eating with real (i.e., metal) silverware) and, given that you'll dine every single day at the office, having some metal silverware is not a bad idea.
Lets see if you will listen to your own advice once you actually start working in banking. It is a pain in the ass to wash metal silverware. What are you going to do, bring some dish soap and a sponge to wash them in the bathroom after every time you eat?
martinrvau, just made it sound like it is a necessity, while he doesn't even work for a bank yet. I have yet to see one person on my entire floor use metal silverware, it is not convenient at all.
