Farewell Interns
So it is about that time of the year summer internships are wrapping up. I was wondering if interns are supposed to do something for the office on their last day? Like get donuts or something... I work at a pretty big company in the accounting department and just seeing if this is a good idea, or is it better to just say your goodbyes and bounce back to school?
Have you guys had an intern do anything to make a lasting impression on their last day?
Bring in some food or a crate of beers, you'll get taken to lunch by the team, you wont be expected to do any work.
Shouldn't the firm do something for them, rather than the other way around? Or are we really that dickish nowadays? We cut the day short at lunchtime and went out for drinks when I interned, poor kids are slaves for a summer buy them the beer.
When do you finish future? I am trapped here for a whole nother week and half the interns are gone, it's all quiet and depressing now lol
I finish next wed, just seeing if i could snag any ideas to leave a lasting impression (like my impression i'll leave needs anything more...haha)
But ya I told them I start school a week earlier than i actually do so I can spend some time at the lake place or else id be in your boat at a week and a half remaining #winning
Lol yeah it sucks being here essentially all alone.
A lot of the interns that have left so far where I am at didn't really do anything, management took them out to eat a couple days before they left, then on their last day the interns walked through the office saying goodbye to the people they worked with and that was about it.

Last day for me today :D fed me cupcakes/cake
Damn I don't finish until the second week of school (mid september). Thank god I'm in NYC.
Why does everyone want to leave as soon as possible? I asked if I could stay as long as possible, literally until a few days before school starts again. And over those couple of days before school I'm doing a networking trip to NY. No vacation for me this summer.
What no goodbye drinks? We usually take out some of the SAs informally for a few rounds of thank you shots before they find out if they get the offer or not.
best buddy bearing. There's just no love for interns.
Yeah, absolutely. Do anything acceptable that will make you stand out.
And that is...?
anyone remember a certain intern because of something specific they did in their last few days on the job?
Today was my last day at my internship (PWM). My office had a little mini party in the conference room with cookie cake and thanked me and the other intern on our team. I also went around and made sure to get business cards of everyone I wanted to keep in touch with and told them thanks for all their help.
Someone suggested sending thank you emails. I will disagree and say that in every internship I've had, I always send hand-written thank you notes at the end (on nice stationary!). People delete emails, but if an intern takes a time to write the thank you note, an FA or MD might keep it in his desk for six months, and every time he opens his drawer there you are. Maybe he'll just throw it away, too, but either way its a nice gesture and it's not that much harder than writing an email.
Congrats to all interns finishing up! Enjoy the rest of summer.
Nice, you're right about the hand written letter. Didn't really think about it, i just might do that instead.
but damn it, my handwriting is awful lol.
So do you go to their office and give them the note or you mail it? Also does anyone use inter-company mailing?
I am mailing mine. Giving them the note can be kind of awkward. Also it just feels cool to get things in the mail. Its like, "I care enough about you that I bought stamps. Win."
I am guessing you already know their mailing stops. How does the whole system work?
I mean, you know the address of the place you interned I'm assuming. Just write their name plus that. It will find its way to them.
My manager is going to be out of the office traveling in my last week. I will send my floor a mass mail and hand write a letter to my manager and leave it at his desk.
What to get for last day office party (Originally Posted: 08/05/2010)
So my manager is funding a last day of my internship celebration and wants me to go out and get some food/drinks for the office for tomorrow afternoon. What should I get? Keep in mind my group is a fairly aged group(mostly 30-50)
Well, from the accumulation of recent posts it would seem we're overdue for a party with hookers, coke and new shoes.
Just finishing up an internship (Originally Posted: 05/11/2007)
I am just finishing up an internship this spring semester.
I worked at a small investment firm and really had a great time. I wanted to buy the fund managers some type of going away present. Any ideas or can you tell me what you got your past bosses as going away presents?
Thanks
Small gifts will do. Box of quality chocolate would be appreciated. It's about the kind gesture.
I was in the same situation about 6 months ago. I ordered a box of mixed nuts, pretzels, and some other goodies. I called up the exec. assistant to see if they got it, she said it had already been devoured. They love snacking...
Your last day as an SA (Originally Posted: 04/17/2010)
What happened on the last day of your internship? Were you kept working till 2 in the morning, or was it all smiles, banter, paperwork and goodbyes to the other SAs before leaving at 5pm? And at what point had you been told about offers?
I'm sure it varies from bank to bank, but the reason I ask is that I'm wondering whether or not it's a good idea to book a holiday starting the next day.
At my bank the offers were handed out in the morning, and it was just lunches, drinks, mingling, etc for the rest of the day. I have heard of friends who didn't receive offers until 2 weeks later though. There were also individuals in my class that were told they didn't initially pass the offer test but were given 2 weeks to perhaps "prove themselves." Brutal!
My bank didn't give offers until a week after finished. Last day spent on an exit review, tidying up tasks and passing over some projects as well as brief exit meetings with group head, people I worked with etc. Almost all interns told by desks just to leave whenever they were done, so long lunches and coffee for most, left at 4 and intern drinks and meal.
Apparently it's different at GS and MS, and I guess pretty much on trading floors too! I have no clue of how it works. so anyone on how different it is??
...Business as usual until about 4:00, then cleaned out, packed up, said bye, and left around 7:00pm
Business as usual until around 2pm, final review with MD, VP and HR, found out offer or not during final review, afterward some backslapping, finished clean up / gave back laptop and BB, and then went home around 3:30-4.
Thanks guys, this is really informative. Good to have a bit of color about what goes on.
What do you mean it's different at GS/MS? I can't imagine it being that different...?
hows it different at gs?
I'm new, but BB give summer analysts offers at the end of the summer? What if a summer analyst is only a sophomore or junior in college?
I asked this question a little while ago - apparently, the usual thing is that if you'll still be in college, you'd get an offer to return to do another internship with the firm.
For trading, my firm didn't give out offers for another few weeks. So the entire day was spent meeting with heads of departments trying to sell their group, and the rest of the time was spent saying goodbyes to everyone. I think I was out by 1 PM.
