Inroads - Internship program
I'm a high school senior seeking an internship and I came across the Inroads Internship program. The program places interns in Fortune 500 companies. Has anybody been through it? Can anyone corroborate its credibility and how likely one is to land an internship with this program?
You should do it. You won't get something on Wall Street, but you will get an internship.
Are you a minority? If so, apply for INROADS. You'll get a mid office internship for your freshman and sophmore years and will make it over to the front office for junior year.
Well, I know I'm not going to get something on Wall Street. I live in MD and don't plan on moving to NY until I graduate unless I get an internship during my summers at college. And yes, I am a minority. I want to use this internship to gain more experience in a corporate setting(and to also build my resume, of course).
So, do you guys think it's a good program?
Correction to my previous post. I do plan on moving out of state if I get accepted to an out-of-state college.
What schools are you looking at?
Georgetown, NYU, George Washington, Cornell, and of course University of Maryland-College Park and Penn State as safeties.
Do it. You learn a lot and it's paid.
I did it. Got paid around 20 bucks an hour at a company that is listed in the DJIA and it quickly seperated me from everybody else with it on my resume and I was only a freshmen. Plus I met my gf in the program. Do it.

i'd agree with previous posters.
1 - you'll make money 2 - gain experience in corporate environments 3 - build resume when your peers aren't, a key edge that should help coming from your college choices
I did it and from Houston was placed in a sweet dig in chicago for my freshman and soph. summer. A lot of companies use it as a way of screening minority undergrads.
inroads is a goddamn scam that gives opportunities to extremely unqualified students not based on academic success, but because they are minorities. Puts every other kid at a disadvantage because when they are applying for junior year internships, they have to compete with kids with two or three quality internships on their resume.

Inroads is good if you want to get into the corporate world. However, if you want to get into investment banking, I would advise against it and go with SEO instead.
Guyjer, but you aren't in investment banking so although it may have worked for you at GE, it will hold little weight for a person that is trying to go for an investment banking internship at a BB.
Roller4Life, I plan on doing the SEO program in my sophomore year in college. I want to use an Inroads internship to gain more experience. This internship might even increase the likelihood of getting picked for Ibanking SEO.
Yes GE is a good company and you had a good internship for a freshman, but will that give you a leg up for highly competitive investment banking positions..I personally don't think so.
The only way you would have that edge through work experience is by having previous work experience at a bulge bracket.
There are other people with Middle Market internships and the sort so you wouldn't be gaining much for IB at least.
I'm not sure if you know this, but boutique/MM internships are relatively easy to get. You call up the bank, and tell them you are willing to work for free. Not many of them say no.
GE would look much more impressive on a resume than Butler, Dick & Co. Advisors. For all the resume screener knows, it is a 2 person chop shop based out of Chattanooga, TN.
Don't know anything about the Inroads program specifically, but seems like a good opportunity for those that might qualify.
How can you discount GE? This could lead you to getting picked for their Rotational Program, which is an excellent precursor to top B-Schools
You do realize there are more prestigous and meaningful positions outside of banking?

Actually I forgot about their FMP for a second. If you can manage to get into FMP or another leading rotational program and excel then I would say it was definitely beneficial.
GE is VERY hostile to FMP leaving for b-school. Not to say people don't leave GE for b-school, but no one talks about it within GE and only select managers are willing to support such a decision.
That being said, FMP is a pretty well-known program for corporate finance, and a few rotations might also have modeling and acquisitions work.
FMPs typically go onto Corporate Audit Staff then shoot for the CFO position.
Inroads right now, before I got in the program, I couldn't get an interview, now I've already interviewed with Kraft, I got an interview in March with R.W Baird, and recently had my resume submitted to Northern Trust. I think it's a great way to get interviews with companies, which are normally not afforded to freshman and sophomores. They are really tight with F500 and Big 4, no so much so for banking. Though they are trying to establish some relationships with some.
It's already been said but Inroads is really good in helping you get your foot in the door for Fortune 500 companies, not so much for investment banking. However, an internship at a Fortune 500 company would look good on your resume if you want to apply for an i-banking internship your junior year summer. One of my friends from college got a summer through Inroads and parlayed that into a FT for GE.
For INROADS, I just had a phone interview and next I will be having my mock trial. It's so many interviews and preparation just for an internship. I hope it pays off!

inroads gives preferences to hispanics and blacks. asians are at a huge disadvantage when they apply for it.
This is more true for SEO and not for Inroads.
I'm not racist, but does anyone think that it is a little odd that a black man can coach a victorious Super Bowl team or run for Goddamn President of the United States (with at least a legitimate shot of getting the nomination), yet we still have these programs that give preferential treatment for minorities in the workplace. Hand outs to select groups is not equality.
But it was the first time a black coach has won the Superbowl and we've never had a black presidential candidate from a major party.
Yep, thats right. This is only the start of it and once we reach true "equality" then we won't need these programs.

At my school, people use INROADS (fresh and soph years) internships as a good stepping stone for SEO (junior) or Junior year BB internships.
The only downside is that INROADS takes a chunk of your salary for helping you out from what I hear. So the guy that made $20 probably could have made $25/hr.
I highly recommend INROADS for freshmen and sophomores though, especially if you live in the NYC area where you can try to get a back/middle office position at a BB.
Exactly, I plan on using INROADS as a stepping stone to SEO. The only difference is I plan on doing it my senior year in high school and freshman year in college. Then, SEO during the year you are allowed to do start the program: sophomore year. I really don't care about the money they might take from me. I'm just using INROADS to gain experience. Hell, I'LL DO IT FOR FREE!!!
As for the Asian comment earlier, when they sent off all the INROADS interns on a weekend trip to Connecticut, I saw about 10 or so Asian males in a field of 200 and most of them were doing IT internships. The number of Asian females was visibly higher as well.

EDIT: I should mention that I am a freshman and I've already secured an offer from a small boutique IB. I would only consider doing INROADS if they could place me within IB at a BB this summer. Is this even remotely possible?

Got my sophomore internship through them in late March. Although it wasn't with a major bank in NYC it was something that helped me secure my SA position this year in the city. The way I see it is it can't hurt you!
Places you in internships, good esp for sophomore year. Don't expect anything FO however. Some of their managers blow and you have to be on top of things

I mean if you can land something it dosent hurt....SEO is better but you need to be a junior. I see INroads as a stepping stone for fresh and soph yr in hs.....Idk how close Inroads is with the BB's I know SEO only places with BB firms
if you've already secured a boutique IB, you're in pretty good shape. INROADS probably won't be able to place you at a BB this summer as it's late and also because although they say they have spots open at BB IB's, they're probably a very TINY amount that are most likely filled.
Although, I wouldn't discourage you from applying -- I don't see any harm in applying if it could potentially land you an offer...maybe not this year, but you have 2 more summers after this
I know kids who secured offers at BB and it converted into FT after their summer. The key is their GPA cut off for IB and Trading is a 3.3 and you have to be a Jr no exceptions

I was in the INROADS program during my undergrad years. INROADS was very enlightening and good corporate training. I would recommend that you join INROADS and do your internships on wall street, if possible. If that avenue doesn't work then try SEO. website(http://www.seo-usa.org/default.asp). If your grades are on par with the SEO's requirements then it should take you to the promise land.

I DIDN'T GET ANYTHING. I'm so freaking!!!!! pissed. Funny thing is I would have done it for free. Seeing as May 1st is drawing nearer and my area's head told me that was the deadline for getting an internship, I sent ML, AXA Advisors and Morgan Stanley in my area my resume telling them I'm doing it for the experience and would be willing to forego monetary compensation but I doubt I'll even get a call back(I'm a HS senior). I was recently selected as a Gates Millennium Scholar(full tuition to any institution up till graduate school) and don't have to worry about getting a summer job for college. I WANT AN INTERNSHIP but I guess it's a little too late.
Dude, you're fine. Chill. It's the end of your senior year. You don't need money for college. Go chill and worry about it next summer when it matters slightly more.

I agreed with mika, enjoy your youth. I'm also waiting to hear back about an internship and it's not looking good. May is just around the corner, and I definitly don't have any backup plans.

No. I really need an internship because I plan on applying as a transfer to the schools I was rejected from but REALLY want to attend after my first semester at my pending college, Wharton being one of my target schools, and I need something that would give me a slight edge over other applicants.
An internship will not give you an edge in college admissions. College admissions is basically a game of statistics - you were likely rejected because your stats (GPA + SAT scores) were lacking. If you want to transfer to a school like Wharton, the best possible thing you can do is to get very very good grades during your first year at whatever college you are going to. You should probably also retake the SAT and study hard for it so you do well this time around.
