Family Office Experience
Anyone currently working at a family office or have experience in the space? They have been more prominent in recent years and a number of them have hybrid models - direct, co's, and FoF. I've come across a few in the market myself including Wildcat (Bonderman), Quilvest (Bemberg), Fremont (Bechtel), Pritzker, etc.

We closed a couple deals with family offices and talk to them regularly. What is your question?
Quilvest is a family office?
Family Office - Value investing (Originally Posted: 01/17/2012)
Is anyone on here working in a family office? A friend of mine recently started working at a family office that concerns itself mainly with value investing and private equity (42% return p.a.) and the structure of the company is so that he can make partner in 5 years.
Any opinions on family offices?
I think people's views on prestige will drive the answer. If it's a solid company (i.e. making partner sets him up well financially), then I'd say why not? It sounds interesting to me.
Is recruiting usually done via headhunter for these offices? I know my friend got his through a connection but in general?
Its connection based, rarely do they openly recruit.
family office is baller. we're tech the prop trading arm of one
thanks guys
An ex-colleague now works for one.
Make sure you diligence them and are comfortable that they won't screw you on your bonus (or carried interest if it is appropriate at your level) and that you actually have an interest in their plans & style of investing as your career will likely grow in that direction to some extent.
Same as shorttheworld, the FoF I work for is the private equity arm of a family office, although we also raise outside capital.
Family offices are a great place to work, lifestyle is excellent and perks are great. Downside is the relative secrecy of many of these organisations mean that the name will often not stand out to headhunters on a cv.
How do you guys feel about MBA placement coming from a family office? Would one be at a major disadvantage against people from IBD/PE?
What can you expect in compensation and bonus?
Insight into family office lifestyle (Originally Posted: 02/20/2016)
Saw various outdated discussions on the topic, was hoping someone could provide more recent insight. Interested in hearing from people who have experience working at a SFO, about lifestyle, the type of work done at a junior level (post-IB would be ideal), etc. Any input would be helpful!
I started my career in a SFO and I can tell you it totally depends on the type of investments the family has. It could be anywhere from LBO analysis, to stock picking, to FoF work (assuming the family has not farmed out all their investing to the big guys.

Currently an analyst at a family office. Having a good idea of what the landscape is, what I can tell you definitively is that no two family offices are the same. Some look very much like large endowments (employing the Yale model) by employing all 3rd party managers/alternative investment-focused, and widely diversified. Others look more like boutique asset mgmt shops (invest directly in public equities and fixed income - not through external managers). I'd say the investment style is largely dictated by the source of the family's wealth. For example, a Soros' family office functions much like a hedge fund. Most family offices have very little internet presence as they don't market for external capital, so no need, hence why it's so difficult to ascertain any info on them. Not sure if that's particularly helpful, but main point is that what an analyst does at one FO is probably not at all the same as what one does at a different FO.
I currently co-manage a family office with the MP (patriarch of the family). Completely agree with saul_goodman that no two FOs are going to be the same. Each FOs we interact with has a different investing strategy (LevFin, VC, value equity, cash-flow focus), and thus are run differently. What each office looks for in hires will also vary due to these differences. We primarily focus on acquiring cash-flowing businesses we can operationally improve. To generate higher returns we have also started a VC arm for Angel through Series C level investments. These businesses are what the Managing Partner is familiar with, and primarily the source of the family's wealth, thus it is what we invest in. NDAs for FOs are extremely strict but if you inbox me I will share what I can. Good luck.
