Its Always That One Intern...

So I'm interning at this firm with 4 others. And I've noticed that out of the group, there's this one intern who's really putting the effort to stand out and (probably or probably not) intentionally trying to put us in the hole. Surely enough, he is pretty intelligent and is on top of things. This makes the situation as if all the sunlight is going to him and I'm basically being ignored.

Has anyone been in this kind of situation? What can I possibly do? I know the answer to this question would be to outsmart him but I don't think that's humanly possible.

Good for him. Not only will he learn a ton and get an offer, but he will also make all of the other interns work harder, which in turn, benefits everyone and the firm .

Great point.

It is a great point. But I have to say this kid is pretty damn smart. I don't know how I'm going to go around this. Indeed, a pretty shitty situation.

Great post.

Look, you can either strive to reach/surpass his level or you can bring him down to yours.

Both speak volumes about your character.

^confused can you elaborate on the situation a bit more?

Is this IBD? At a boutique/mm/bb? when did the internship start? How do you know he's standing out or trying to put you in the hole (examples)?

I've interned at a few places but I've never encountered a shitty situation because of someone's intelligence (not trying to sound condescending at all just trying to see if there's a way to give some advice)

It's actually not an IBD internship. I'm in the Corporate Finance department at a BB. I initially wanted to be in IBD but couldn't find the opportunity to do so this summer. It's nothing intensive as IBD, but it's still something.

most people are competitive in this industry. learn to deal now, i suggest you take it as a challenge and up your game, but honestly this kind of whining is exactly the wrong attitude to have.

Ok here is what you do.

  1. Find the drug dealers in your local area.
  2. Go to the dealers and buy a bunch of ecstasy. It shouldn't cost you more than $200.
  3. Grind up half the pills.
  4. Tell him that you should go out and drink with him. Take the powdered ecstasy and put it in his drink.
  5. Take the other pills and plant them in his desk. Hide it well, but make sure someone can see if they searched for it.
  6. Tell the MDs that he is doing ecstasy, but your scared for your safety and you want to remain anonymous.
  7. MDs will find the drugs. The intern will say someone planted it and that he never does drugs.
  8. They take a drug test and find that he has been in fact taking it. 9 He loses his job, has a criminal record, and most likely never work in the industry again.
  9. Claim your job offer.

or the other scenario is

  1. Work harder than him.
  2. Claim your job offer.

$100 worth of ecstasy in somebody's drink just to make sure they don't pass a drug test seems a lil overboard. He'll be feeling reaaaaaalllllll gooooooooood.

present yourself as someone who has the most potential in the group

present him as someone who just happen to have most knowledge at the moment

focus on the networking, and see where he isn't that good

i dont know, use your intelligence... make him your slave? make him your methor? dunno, but definitely give more details here

You'd be surprised, it is quite possible that your supervisors see this too and are just using him to squeeze a little more out of the group. If your supervisors are oblivious to his tactics, then you probably don't want to work in that job anyways.

What do you mean by smart?

2 kids in my last BB Internship were from Target/Ivy Leagues and they had book smarts they didn't add up to dog shit. It was funny cause the most efficient workers were from non-targets including myself and we were just dominating in the office.

What is he doing it? Is he sly and has a charming personality? He might be taking all of you for a spin.

I suggest you make friends with him, go to lunch with him. See what his intentions are.
