Mutual Fund internship
What is your take on a summer internship working at a non-ny, 50bn mutual fund in terms of work experience quality? It is a value fund, and the role would be as an "equity analyst." When applying for full-time after undergrad, how would investment banks or trading firms view this experience? How about PE firms or HF's? Just trying to gauge the perceived strength of this experience and its value in terms of developed skill set. Thanks in advance.
this would be a good role for the buyside and other HF's and other asset managers
equity implies you will be learning about investing/markets/how companies operate
this isn't useful for PE or fixed income because you wouldn't be exposed to that kind of financial analysis
sounds perfect, pm me the application link! LOL. But seriously, do it.
Thanks for the response. So I assume that if I want to stay in AM then the equity analyst role will be good. If I want to eventually transition to a HF would it be better to try and get a fixed income analyst position within the same firm? To my understanding, HF's seem more fixed income-focused than MF's so I would think that an internship dealing with FI may be better experience for that. Is there any truth to this or am I completely off base? Also what is the likelihood of being able to land a full time gig at a HF straight out of undergrad with this MF experience?
I agree, buyside and i-banks will value the experience. Very few PE firms hire undergrads anyways, so stop wasting your time.

I dont think HFs will hold it against you if you are working in ER at a pretty large fund. to get into HF you may need MBA anyway so it is a ways off.
Equity Mutual Fund Intern (Originally Posted: 03/26/2013)
I'm a sophomore at a target and received an offer to work for a ~20-25 person mutual fund shop in LA that runs about 2bn. They are only long equity, small cap. can any speak to their experience at a similar place in terms of what they did, their experience, and if they did any financial modeling, etc.?
My ultimate goal is to do BB IBD next summer. Thanks in advance

I know this is the IBD forum, but as a sophomore that wants to do BB IBD next summer I would like some advice
I was offered a paid summer internship at a $2.2bn AUM mutual fund to work for one of their equity funds. I was wondering how this would be viewed in the grand scheme of summer internship or should i try looking for something in IB/HF?
Depends on your other options really, but I would take it. If it's for this summer, I think it'd be a bit of a risk to reject this in hopes of securing another internship.
can anyone speak to their experience as a mutual fund analyst?
Depends on size , team, people you work for.
It'd be about a $700M fund, just equities, and about a handful of people.
Internship at a Mutual Fund?? (Originally Posted: 10/27/2010)
Hi guys. I'm wondering if you guys could inform me on what interns and 1st year analysts could expect to do at a big equity mutual fund, lets say BlackRock. I'm mostly interested in what tasks interns do.
Thanks
depends what group you're in.. any specifics?
Sorry, but what do you mean by group, the category of the equity fund? If so, let's say the category is large blend.
If that wasn't what you meant, could you tell me in general, what an intern would do at an equity fund?
no he means what job function.. working for PMG (portfolio management group, the actual investment group) at BlackRock, for example, is 100X better than working for PAG (portfolio analytics group, glorified risk management) or AMG (sales)
ohhh thanks for clearing that up. So yeah, what would be some typical tasks for an intern working at BlackRock PMG?
could someone help me out? or direct me to somewhere I could find this info?
