Depends what you mean by "finance." Different RE career paths quite obviously rely on the theory of finance. RE investors, developers, brokers, lenders, etc. all use finance. But if you mean specifically financing of real estate, then that's a little different.

I'm guessing you mean the former, in which case the following thread appears pretty comprehensive. It's been quoted before and I'll quote it again (6th post down):

I think there are quite a few where they intersect, although I don't exactly know what you mean by finance because that is too general. Anyway, off the top of my head:

Real Estate Investment Banking - Advisory: M&A, Portfolio Brokerage - Public Capital Markets: REIT IPOs and Secondary offerings, Private Equity Placement, Debt Placement - Debt - CMBS, Mez, Public and Private placement, Bridge Lending, Construction Financing - Structured Transactions - JVs, Restructuring and Recaps

Real Estate Private Equity - Opportunitstic Corporate acquisition focused and less of the asset acquisition focused - Debt-strategies - Fund of funds

Real Estate Hedge Funds - They exist but I don't know too much about them.

Asset Management gigs and some jobs at REITs and REOCs start to become less finance focused and much more property focused, so I won't go into those - they are also on the other thread that someone posted.

I don't really know what I mean either, lol. I'm just looking for a big-picture, broad overview. Thanks for the input you guys.

I am also interested in real estate, specifically, real estate development in manhattan/surrounding area. Whats the best way to go about getting an internship at a development company first, as I am a junior in college right now.

Also where can I find a list of developers in the city to target? Thanks for the help.

This opportunity is a non-pay position for the initial 90 day period in hopes of it turning into a permanent pay position after the internship period.

Fore more info you can drop by at their site.

Hope this would be helpful.

This is very vague. What kind of research? Like, working for Costar/Real Capital? Or being an in-house research person at CBRE? Those jobs kind of suck.

If you want to do research related to real estate, look to wall street. Equity research covering real estate, perhaps some sort of fixed income research related to real estate. Green Street is known for equity research but also does some macro research nowadays, and anything at Green Street would be a good opportunity for a young guy.

What would you recommend to pursue if I am looking for a career shift... I am looking for an entry level position in Finance, analyst maybe. The goal is to earn more money and build some sort of a career from there. I am a recent immigrant, I have a BA in Economics, spent 3 years in online marketing (commercial real estate), almost 2 years in administrative position for a real estate developer, I am working on a migration project now for a small company transferring excel records to a loan management software. Is there a role where I can apply some of my experience and skills? I am lost.

Somewhat related to my coverage. Happy to discuss if it is actually relevant.

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

What do you want to know?

People tend to think life is a race with other people. They don't realize that every moment they spend sprinting towards the finish line is a moment they lose permanently, and a moment closer to their death.

I think the main question I have is: what is the best metric to value a property/building? I searched, but didn't find much. If anybody has an excel they may share, I'll pm you my email. Again guys, I greatly appreciate it.

I am just a bit concerned about whether to expect mainly fit or technical questions. I have previous real estate experience as a credit analyst, but have just started covering CRE. My interview is with one of the largest CRE financial services firms as a portfolio analyst.
