Sorry to say but u should def look for housing near your desk for the summer I hear ur logic but its not so much the early mornings its the client drinks/events which will run late and will most likely be in meatpacking

Doesn't matter what the hours are, if you are an intern and are serious about getting a return offer, you should be the first one in and last one out of the office, regardless of desk.

As an intern you should work until 9 or 10pm. The rest of your desk will probably be gone by 6 or 7pm, but you should stay longer to read research, do a project, read up on the product, ect. There is always something that can be done. Think of the internship as a marathon. Work IBish type hours for 10 weeks, secure the offer, and then you can work "normal" hours when you start FT. You don't want to not get an offer and start thinking "if only...."

Not always the best strategy, at one desk I interned on they told me that they want me to work their hours, they wont hire me because i stayed in the office longer.

It's like any other part of the getting-a-job process in that you need to feel out the people your dealing with. If your desk is full of workhorses that admire long hours then get in early and stay late. If not, don't worry about it and just make sure your presence is known when you are there (Obviously you shouldnt be in much later or leave earlier than the analysts).

Gekko that sounds like overkill honestly. My days range from between 10 and 15 hours but its usually around 12. Trading may have fewer hours but the degree that you must be always alert IMO makes it tougher than IB.

Let's please not get into what's "tougher." You've never done banking and I've never done trading so there's no way in hell either of us can assess which is more difficult. Please don't make any claims unless you can back them up.

All depends on the desk. For most of the desks on my floor weekends are rare. I come in every so often, just because I can be very productive on the weekend. There are never more than a few people, and its rarely the same people.

Some of the exotic credit guys works banking hours, but they get in around 8:00am, and most of the time they avoid weekends. Most interns basically worked from 6:00 or 7:00 to 7:00pm at the latest and never came in on the weekend.

You had it right, we were always told to follow the FILO principle = First in, Last out. I'd suggest following it as much as possible to help land a ft. Not to mention, some banks are now paying ot to interns. The only weekend I worked was to complete a presentation with other SAs that we had to give to our respective desks. Approximately 60-70hrs - structuring roles tended to be somewhat higher.

Interned on a small FI desk downtown last summer. Typically there most days at 7-730 out by 8-9. Most of the staff was gone by 5:30 every day, but like others said- be the first one in and the last one out. I gave myself a project to work on and read every book I could get my hands on. Not to mention you ultimately make more when you add up the OT.

Depends entirely on the product, but you're realistically looking at 70 hours a week as an upper range. You'll be arriving earlier than you ever thought possible (before 6am for some desks) but "late" nights are 8pm, 9pm. Did have friends in SPG and a couple in rates who got hammered though and somehow managed to spend 90 hours in the office, coming in on weekends to "finish projects." Seemed entirely unnecessary.

60-70 hours a week for most desks. In general, rates guys get in earliest because Fedwire goes live at 7. (I worked in a rates product and had to be on the desk at 5:50am.) Expect to get in by 6:30 in credit and FX and maybe a bit later for equities.

You will absolutely not be able to go to the gym during the day. Last summer my choice was either to get dinner delivered after work and hit the gym or cook dinner and skip the gym. The former worked for me, but it was more expensive.

If you stayed late enough, you could cop Seamless while at work, get home, hit the gym, and be in bed by 10:30 ... all good enough to be up at 5:30 to get at it all over again.

I didn;t do this for the first half of the summer because I didn't want to stay until 7 and then wait an hour to get it delivered. Then I realized you could submit the order for 7pm at 5:30 and they would still deliver ASAP

That was a game change, bro. You could even submit at 4, enter delivery for 8pm, then call and manually change the delivery to 'ASAP.'
