Colorado University - Boulder, Leeds School of Business.

I know that it isn't a "target" university but that is where I'm planning on going (previous choice was NYU, but living at NYC is way to expensive as a student and in my situation).

I am going as a Freshman this fall now that I have my green card (even though I'll be 21 years old), I would really appreciate if someone could give me some opinions and insights about Leeds School of Business in CU-Boulder.

Thanks a lot,

Miguel.

In terms of lifestyle and college experience, it doesn't get much better. Awesome campus, good weather, fun outdoor activities...awesome college experience.

As far as finance goes, there's not a lot of ibanking recruiting at CU Boulder. Colorado has some local boutiques that recruit there and a few students each year are able to network into BB opportunities. Citi used to do on-campus for their SF office, maybe they still do? Getting into IB from Boulder will be an uphill battle, but it's not impossible if you are a top student.

Boulder has developed into a major tech hub, and for motivated students there are a lot of opportunities to get involved in the startup community. If that is something you are interested, I'd suggest looking into that.

I would agree with all of what TB said. You can't ask for a better ingratiation into American College culture than CU. As a student coming from another country and now staying permanently in the US, I would strongly recommend that you get involved in the social scene at Boulder. If you can get good grades, get involved in a leadership capacity with some student organizations / ECs, and network well, you should definitely have some opportunities to break into the industry.

Setting all that aside, CU is magical... Proximity to prime powder if you are into snow sports, beautiful campus, excellent social scene with a fun student body. Some of the most intelligent, chill, and down to earth people I have come across went to CU... definitely a great opportunity so don't worry about the reputation, just put your head down, get good grades and keep an open mind and I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Give me a break troll. You really expect people to believe you turned down NYU for CU-Boulder? It's a great campus, great town, but if that was true, you aren't interested in a quality education or job.

OR, it was a decision based on finances, like OP said...

People make college choices on a lot more than just academic reputation. Many people wouldn't want to go to school in the middle of NYC. When I was 18 y/o jobs and academic prestige were low on my list of factors when it came to choosing a school. I had an awesome time in college, and it hasn't held me back in my career.

This. I was exactly the same way. I didn't know what investment banking was when I was evaluating colleges. I knew about Wall Street and that I likely wanted to get there, but I wanted to have fun, chase chicks, party, and get a good education. State schools allow you to do this... Oh, and I got a job on the street in banking and also got a job at a top private equity firm...

Well. I won't be living at the dorms since I'll be renting my own apartment. I can't stay in NYC because doing the maths, it will be nearly impossible for me to attend NYU, live either at the dorms or outside, specially after having paid lawyers, immigration fees, etc. It's just too much.

Also my parents will be coming here to the United States, and why not have them living on a town that is cosmopolitan, clean and doesn't have the hassle of NYC? I mean, I love the city, but during my college years I'd like some freedom, both financially and "environmentally".

About Skiing/Snowboarding... I have never done any of those. I grew up on a Caribbean island in Venezuela and we are far away from snow. Yeah, we've got some snow on the southwest side of the country, but that's just like a tiny bit on top of a peak.

I lived in Boulder for a while and let me just say one thing. Why do people like CU? Because of its location to the mountains, because of the party atmosphere, because every other kid loves smoking weed all day and getting plastered. If NYU is no longer an option, go to CU for a year and then transfer to a better school, while maintaining PERFECT grades and getting some amazing recommendation letters. I can't imagine a situation where a CU grad would be getting an entry-level WallStreet job. It's a "decent" school in that it has some good programs, some decent teachers, and some intelligent students, but as you will see in your classes, they pretty much let anyone in.

I'll definitely look into that.

I'm not for the weed or the parties. I had enough "fun" during my CC time, but now with this major I want to focus on doing great in class and have high grades in order to land a job somewhere.

Well kids from CU have definitely gotten jobs on the street, as I am friends with a few...

I'd be interested to hear where amx1992 is at now. It's great he set his sights on Wall Street, but if you're making comparable money (adjusted for cost of living) and working for a boutique firm in Colorado, I'd say that's just as good as living in NYC.

Good Lord, what is with this forum's hard on for prestige? Some of the dumbest kids I've met were Harvard grads, and I've personally thrown Stanford resumes into the shredder. When reviewing a resume I look at: 1) GPA. 3.6+ preferable, 3.5 cutoff 2) School/Major- Is it a known 'to be difficult program'? Is the school somewhat decent? yes to both, throws into 'maybe' pile 3) Jobs- I'm looking for brand name finance internships, or incredible experience. I'll know in 2 seconds if you have no idea what you did all summer, or if you're fudging the actual role. 4) Clubs/interest- interest kinda falls into the jobs category for me. I want to see leadership in banking clubs, and some indication that you're an actual human as opposed to some mouth breathing weirdo.

There are schools that get special attention, but only because the students here are most likely to accept the offer. If you do not go to a school that doesn't have to work for our OCR attention, you better network with me to get my eyes on your resume. Then you're in the running like every other candidate.

There. I just gave you the secret to IBD recruiting.

I went to CU

Most of what was said here is spot on

Like any decent state school, if you perform well and have ambition you'll be fine

The new head of finance is a former Goldman guy. NYC GS now takes 3-5 ibd analysts from CU every year, for all you preftige larries. You can do very well for yourself, as there is a TON of money at the school, or you can drink and smoke yourself into a coma. You're given enough rope to hang yourself with at that school, so to speak

Curious about the financial aspect you mentioned... Unless you're on scholarship, CU is very expensive, and Boulder housing isn't exactly cheap. It's no NYC, but dropping $200k for a public school doesn't exactly scream "I'm saving money"
