Internship Postings Up, Apply Now?
Hey guys, so a bunch of investment banks have posted their summer analyst positions on my school's on campus recruiting site. The resume drops are open from now until the scheduled interviews (late October and early November). Is there any benefit to applying now (is there an earlier interview process?) or would it not matter, as resumes will be reviewed right before interviews regardless?
Anyone have any ideas about this?
If it is for OCR, they will interview and go through this process first before the online applications
When to apply for internship? (Originally Posted: 09/21/2006)
When is the best time to apply for an ibanking internship? If you apply on the corporate website are you less likely to get an offer than applying through a university system?
Not even a question....apply through your university system.

Hi! I have heard the "apply early" thing multiple times, but my application will not be competitive before early October. Is it reasonable or too late? When is it really too late? Thanks!
If it is not going to be competitive before early October, don't apply before early October!
At semi-target...when to apply through website for SA? (Originally Posted: 11/12/2012)
So my school has OCR from some BBs/MMs. When should I apply through their site for SA positions? On our career site, it says applications are due Jan 2 for OCR. Should I apply to the places that aren't doing OCR now?
what a silly silly redundant question. just do it asap. you silly boy
Apply now or wait for an internship to start to improve the CV (Originally Posted: 08/05/2013)
Hey guys, I have a problem. I am studying at a semi-target in the UK, and am getting ready for SA IBD applications (I am entering my penultimate year). The story is this:
Applications have opened in some investment banks (like Barcap and CS) on the 1st of August. A few of them are gonna be opening before September. I am currently finishing my internship at a small corporate finance firm, and have an AM internship lined up for the beginning of Sept. I have a dilemma about these banks, whether to wait till my second internship starts and boost my CV with it (I do not have much finance experience except for that corp fin i mentioned) and then apply, but face the possibility that they will be done screening applications by the beginning of September and ding me automatically. The other option is apply now, write "incoming intern in firm X" on my CV (so not telling them much about the experience), but be sure i will be considered.
What do you think guys? Would be very grateful for a piece of advice.
In the same boat as you, interested in any responses.
any thoughts on this matter guys?
Guys I did not get an answer and I'm still having this dilemma... tell me what you think!
Help deciding when to apply for IBD SA (Originally Posted: 03/24/2013)
I am currently a sophomore at a non-target and have secured an IBD SA position at a boutique for this upcoming summer. I have previous internships in financial services (BO/MO roles at a local muni bond brokerage and at a large AM firm).
I have the opportunity to complete another internship at a 2nd tier BB or top MM doing public finance IB or at a MM DCM group this upcoming January (would be working full time and not taking classes for the semester, and would also go into beginning of summer so I couldn't do typical SA program). This would then push my graduation back a semester so I could graduate in what would be the winter of my fifth year.
I'm wondering if it's a better idea to do this internship and have two IB internships on my resume and then apply to do a IBD SA stint in what would be the summer going into my fifth year (I wouldn't be graduating till the following December), or just to go ahead try to do SA going into my fourth year with just having the boutique and other two financial services on my resume. Keep in mind that many students from my school typically do five years.
Sorry for the lengthy post and thanks in advance!
Anyway you could go for the January internship while recruiting for BB IBD SA? Shoot for that and then if it doesn't work you can try again.
I think you should certainly go for the internship. It is well worth it.
What I always see people say that all things being equal, GPA, Leadership, etc. that internships(work experience) is weighed in pretty heavily.
When to start applying for a summer internship (Originally Posted: 07/07/2011)
Right now I have a corporate finance internship for the summer of 2011. I want to land an internship at an IB for summer 2012 and was wondering when would be the approproiate time to start contacting people about a position for next summer. I know it's still really early, but is there an ideal time of the year to start contacting people about internship positions for next summer?
Nov-Dec. even that is kinda early. I think credit suisse is the first.
Generally Jan/Feb of 2012 for summer 2012.
Depends on whether you are in LDN or NYC. The London offices seem to be faster in filling up the SA seats. GS has already given offers to their 2011 spring class for 2012 summer internships. And last year JPM and CS began giving offers in September. This was both for IBD and S&T. On the other hand, I've heard of people who were interviewed by BB's for summer positions as late as April.
Grades not fully out - how to apply (Originally Posted: 01/06/2011)
right now I am in the process of applying to banks for sa, I have applied to most so far using my 3.8 cgpa of last year (the latest gpa currently available on my transcript).
Right now, one of my fall 2010 grades have come out (a B) on my online transcript, but the majority of this semester's courses still have no marks released yet.
I know that I should be fine for applying with the 3.8 because it was the most relevant info I had at the time, but I am wondering, do I continue applying with the 3.8 even though my cgpa will "officially" drop in ~2 weeks time?
Yes, 3.8 is perfectly fine. You are not lying and you can explain yourself if and when it becomes an issue.
Dont worry, use what you have right now, how can you make any assumptions on your future GPA at this point. Leave it and as pointed out you can explain, but I doubt it will be an issue at all.
did you study abroad is bangkok?
similar question..i studied abroad and my grades aren't on the transcript yet (and it's gonna take a while until my school's abroad office will put them on there), but i know what i got in all of my classes. my gpa significantly improved with my abroad grades..is it okay to put something like
GPA (without semester abroad): 3.5 GPA (including semester abroad): 3.7
on my resume?
thanks for the responses, hopefully things go well!
bump?
When to Apply: Sophomore in Search of Trading Internship (Originally Posted: 10/10/2010)
I am a sophomore at an HYP-level target looking to get a trading or investment management oriented internship at a BB, HF, or similar institution this summer. I know this goal is lofty, but there is nothing I can do besides apply. When should I start applying? Also, my preferred group would have something to do with FX, Interest Rates, or another Global Macro oriented product. Suggestions for good places to apply to?
It really isn't a question about when you should be starting to apply. What you need to be doing now and for the next couple months (as most SA deadlines are mid-january) is network. Contact alumni at the major banks and start talking about "summer opportunities".
Clearly, as a sophomore, you are in a tough position. You (as anyone does really) need help from the inside, so reaching out to alumni at any level within the bank can be beneficial.
If you are a minority, I believe JP Morgan has a program of which you can apply to. Definitely see what banks have sophomore programs and which don't.
Another idea is to look at asset management companies in your area and see if they hire interns for their trading desk or with their portfolio managers. You want ANY experience related to trading/finance that you can get.
Good luck.
Does it make a difference when I apply? Summer internship (Originally Posted: 09/14/2012)
Hello,
I am going to be applying for a summer internship in S&T this season, but wanted to know if it makes a difference on when I apply.
For example, if I submit my application now vs. submitting two days before the deadline.
Does it matter?
Thank You
Some internships remain open until the positions are filled.
If you get in early, you may be competing for all the spots, but if you get in late, there may only be one spot left to fill, it depends how HR do their recruiting. All HR systems are different.
I would suggest getting it in early if you can. If anything, it gives certainty to the planning of interviews because if selection is done in a tiered system, you will be in the first round of offers, and also can ask HR to keep you in mind for other positions that may be offered.
Whens a good time to apply to boutiques for summer ib intern? (Originally Posted: 02/18/2007)
right now or closer to the summer like april. Also, I was wonderin if anyone knows any boutiques that recruit summer interns for sure. qualifications: target school(west coast), good activities, previous boutique IB experience.
Thanks in advance!
Check the thread that just got posted today - has a list of boutiques on the west coast that are strong and yes they do recruit summer interns. I would suggest applying now, since spots do fill up, and applying in april will put you at risk of not finding a job at all.
Aren't interviews already over or at least in the late stages at a lot of the BBs?
thanks monkeynumber7....that's a very good list. Also, I was wondering if you guys knew if its okay to continue to apply for a summer intern position at boutiques if you signed for a oct start date at another firm. I have a four month break after school and plan to travel for only one so i have time for an summer position.
When should I apply for SA positions given my situation? (Originally Posted: 12/02/2012)
I know my GPA will drop from a 3.59 to around a 3.53 after this semester. All the SA IBD positions are up online on OCR, so should I apply right now with a resume that has a higher gpa or wait till it gets closer to the deadline with an updated resume (lower gpa).
Does it matter when I apply? Will they ask me for an updated resume/transcript once my final grade for this semester come out?
Interested in hearing this as well. Currently have a 4.0 but it will likely drop to a 3.9 after this semester.
KYS
Apply now, provide an updated transcript later if they ask. Simple.
Is going from 4.0 to 3.9 really that big of a deal?
Request your transcript before grades come out.
Really no one gives a crap about the difference between 3.53 and 3.59 or 3.9 and 4.0. You should just go ahead and apply now because it doesn't hurt, but the GPA difference likely wouldn't play a factor one way or the other.
There's just something about a 4.0 though that seems to make a difference. I agree that there's not a big difference between a 3.55 or 3.65 but it I think there might be between a 3.9 and 4.0 Don't mean to sound cocky just being honest haha. Though some might actually see a 4.0 as a negative I suppose.
Best Time to Apply for Internships? (Originally Posted: 09/28/2006)
I plan to apply for internships at the top ibanking firms- Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Lehman Brothers, etc. Not all of them are coming to my school though. Their website says they accept applications through December, and Lehman even recommends submiting the application at the END of December. It seemed a bit late, since interviews are held in January and February. When is the best time to apply for summer internships?
If they aren't comming to your school.. there's a good chance they aren't hiring from your school. You mayu have to go an alternate route..
Where are you studying?
University of Illinois. I'm studying Electrical Engineering (#4 school in the nation) and Accounting (#1). I'm also a D1 varsity athlete and have a 4.0. I think I have a pretty good shot and would like to apply online to those companies not coming to my school. What month is a good time?
I would start networking with alumni now so that come December/January when banks start looking for interns, you can avoid the online application process (applying online is almost akin to throwing your resume straight into the trash). Get someone within the IBD to pass your resume on to HR so they actually look at it, you'll probably look good enough on paper to warrant a first round phone screening.
when to start applying to internships (Originally Posted: 09/06/2012)
I know school just started up but I was really curious as to when people start applying for summer internships. Im coming off a very succesful internship at MSSB (even though wasn't the hardest internship, got very good reviews and a foot in the door). Looking to move over into sales and trading or something along those lines. When should I apply for it? Is october to late, even setpember or is that to early
Is this for FT or 2013 SA? Interested as well for both US and UK recruitment.
Same question... HR are weird - different banks gave me totally different dates
Right now.
Yes, that's what I'm thinking, but then you have a following dilemma:
In my school (and most others in the UK) banks come to campus pretty late, since the term starts in Oct - like GS and MS are in the beginning of Nov. There is also shitloads of networking events / trading games / other things to attend, which could potentially strengthen your CV. But by them 2 months of app time would have passed, so obviously you would be pretty late. Any thoughts?
Save the apps you want to network for for last. You can get some practice on apps you care less about that way. Networking at these things can make a difference to be sure. A couple good questions at a JP Morgan presentation could be enough to get you a first-round for instance.
When to Start Looking/Applying to PWM Internship Roles? (Originally Posted: 08/18/2015)
Does anyone know anything about the recruiting timeline? Where do I start looking? Does recruitment happen on campus if I am at a semitarget/target?
Are you looking for a school year PWM or next summer?
...or he is actually interested in the field.
What would you recommend then? For someone who is not a jr and wants to go into IBD? I was thinking maybe just doing some of lbo trainings on here but would be very open to something more.
I want to get an internship in pwm BC I'm trying to learn more about finance. I did a lot of econ and finance stuff in hs so I'm trying to stay ahead of the game. I'm also looking for some real life work experience but don't want to work at mickey d's
Also pwm is like the only finance internship available to freshmen besides like insurance sales
Full disclosure, the guts of the internship won't be far off from insurance, it will just be a better name brand

How far into summer will this exactly go? Some places allow their SAs to start a little late (provided that it's not too much later into the summer).
Considering that you're a non-target, the ideal situation is one where you take the winter internship. It's something secure and that you have locked down that will open many, many doors by way of networking and practical experience. The problem lies in that if you stand a good chance to nab a SA position in your next summer, it may be less advantageous to skip that opportunity. Plus, you'll have to fill the gap in the summer with something.
Thank you for your response.
the internship will end in late june. I understand that it will be a great opportunity, however I do not want to get stuck in public finance. And also, to fill the second part of that summer I plan on studying abroad at LSE doing their summer school program.
I guess my main question is will banks notice/care that I am applying for the summer after my fourth year as long as I still have another semester to finish after the SA stint?
