GPA Issue!!

Okay - so I have a 3.3 GPA at a target school, majoring in economics. I've gotten a couple interviews from BBs (don't ask me how, I'm surprised myself). Last year, I took a class within my major and ended up getting a horrific grade in it. I nearly failed. One of my parents became seriously ill during that time and my grades suffered as a result. Anyway, I retook the class over the summer and did MUCH better. In my school, the new grade replaces your old grade and that is also reflected in your GPA. However, the old grade still appears on the transcript.

Now my question is, although I am not lying about GPA (well maybe I rounded up lol), the fact that I nearly failed one of my classes hurt me in the long run, i.e. in background checks?

Btw, the class I nearly failed was a finance class.

Some of my interviews are for IBD, S&T, Fin Div and even Ops.

I feel uneasy about this.

Thanks a lot!

Ask b2. He's failed at

Ask b2. He's failed at everything: grades, school, women, life, etc. He will probably give you more insight.

Take this with a grain of salt...

In my [somewhat limited] experience, I have never been asked for a transcript before actually getting an offer, so up til that point the only data point they have is my GPA without anything more detailed. I would think, think, that once you have gotten to the point where you have an offer, something like what you described wouldn't make a difference. Not as if they discovered you lied about something. If however, you are asked to submit a transcript prior to interviewing, then all bets are off. Common sense leads me to think it shouldn't matter (much) but if there's one thing I've learned in the past few months it's that things that seem like common sense don't tend to be too common.

Agreed

Yes, my question pertains to post-offer. In this world, I don't like to take anything for granted. Anyway, thanks for your reply - it was very useful.

Dude, don't worry about it.

Dude, don't worry about it. Even with a borderline failing class, the worst that could happen is they ask, you explain and they say, "Oh I'm so sorry that must've been terrible." If even with that terrible grade you still have a decent GPA at 3.3, it shows how much higher it would've been without that extenuating circumstance.

Oh, and for anyone reading these posts who is applying for jobs- ALWAYS PUT YOUR GPA DOWN. I literally do not even look at the resume if someone fails to add their cumulative GPA. Even if it's a 2.8, I will consider you (provided you have some ridiculous internships/accomplishments or were in a really hard major). But if you try to hide it, 99.99% of bankers reading resumes will simply toss your's out.
