IRL it's a little lighter than in the picture, somewhere between burgundy and purple. It's pretty conservative I guess, but 90% of the time I see people wearing navy or light blue ties.

I'd say it is good to go.
I'd say it is good to go. Something I could wear to the office.

Why people ask these
Why people ask these questions is beyond me. Yes, it's perfectly fine. Here's an example of a tie that should not be worn to an interview: http://www.zazzle.com/trip_over_flat_surfaces_neck...

I see nothing wrong with that tie.

The width should not be a problem. General rule of thumb is that the width of your jacket's lapel should equal that of your tie at its widest point. Never go over, but if you go under, never by more than half an inch.

Thanks, Mr. Flusser. I was just highlighting that to the kid since I doubt he realizes a 3" is on the skinny side. Doesn't matter if your lapels are 3", too -- it is skinny.

No sir, it isn't. 3" is not skinny at all. I would far prefer to see a more slender guy in a 7-cm (2.75") tie with a well-tailored suit rather than watch him swallowed up by the bib that so many people think is the only acceptable form of neckwear for the office. 3.5" has been de rigueur in the corporate world for ages, but straying on the narrower side of that is not sacrilegious by any means.
