Morgan Stanley Operations Interview
Hey guys, I could use some help here.
So I have a 2nd interview with Morgan Stanley for an Operations Analyst in their Baltimore Office. The first phone interview I had was actually for a different position in their Operations department but the HR lady contacted about a new position that is not even posted on the career website. I'm not sure what to think about that. Anyway, the interview is scheduled for 3 hours. Has anyone had an interview in this department in this office or elsewhere? I'm just trying to figure out what type of questions I might get asked.
Thanks.
Pure fit/behavioral. Know your story inside and out. Be passionate about operations and don't come off as someone trying to use operations to "network" their way into front office....even if you are.
Thanks, that helped a lot.
If you are trying to use MS Ops as a way to get into their front office, you might as well just drop it now. Many of my friends were in the same assumption, they began working in the Baltimore office and they told me it was painful. The compensation is low for the hours work and the HR people basically tell every applicant at the beginning of the interviews, that you cannot transfer to front office. In fact you deal very little with front office. I just want you to know don't have your expectations high and just think that because its Morgan Stanley that you are in a good place. Do MS Ops, if you are truly sure you want to do operations otherwise if your end goal is investment banking or asset management, you would be better off canceling the interview.
Sorry brah, not all of us have rich parents to pay our bills while we dick around
One of my close friends did MS Ops as an internship and got his FT offer in MS PWM. Also was getting interviews for FT in IBD. Not saying that it's likely or even common at all, but it can happen. That being said, yeah, you don't want to go into MS Ops with the mentality that you'll get into their FO...but still, any internship is better than none.
Good advice. What if I want to take the experience and work at a real estate firm or another type of financial position elsewhere in a few years? Do you think it would be beneficial?
yes, I know friends who went from OPs to real estate finance or other careers in real estate as well.
A good family friend of mine says he asks all his applicants if they know how to peel a banana because REF is so easy
I am interviewing with the Baltimore office for a different position within Operations...2 hour, 4 person interview. I'm thinking it will be mostly behavioral/fit....How did your interview go? Did they get into current events or wade into technicals at all?
I just found out that I got the first job I interviewed for so I'm pretty excited right now. Thanks for all the help.
Congrats, glad we could help.

Does anyone one have any idea of the Comp for Morgan Stanley Operations in Private Wealth management?
i would imagine it would be somewhat close to what Barclays is paying for their Operations position. Its 50 + 5 bonus with Overtime (1.5 hourly rate) and I am not sure about a year end bonus. (P.S. this is for the NYC office)
Well I know for a fact at MS Ops, it's 55K base + 10k bonus. Barcap low balls its Ops pay. GS pays the highest on the street at 60K. Most other BBs pay at 55K. Year end bonus in Ops is roughly 10% of your base for first year.
Unless GS raised their base for ops, which I don't think they did, it's 55k, and overtime for ops is usually 50% hourly rate, but I do hear some banks have 1.5 times. If money is the only thing that matters, BarCap's 1.5 times hr rate will more than compensate the lower base, 15 to 20k in overtime, if you do over 50 hours a week.

Hello everyone,
I am new to Morgan Stanley Wealth Management and working in an entry-level position in Operations.
A career path I have been considering is becoming a Financial Advisor for the firm when the time and opportunities are right. However, I am starting to enjoy working in Operations and curious to know what the opportunities are in this type of career path. I am only aware of the next two positions I could be promoted to. Does anyone know the job titles and opportunities there are in senior management following this career path, where I can expect to make a $500k salary (if possible) later on?
I have a degree in finance and expect to obtain broker licenses next year, 2016.
Thank you all for your input.
You will not make 500k in an operations role for WM unless you are the COO of the region, which is highly unlikely.
If you're enjoying Operations then stay with it. The "prestige" is often not worth it! But if it's big money you're after then WM Ops is not the end game. You'll need to move into a business with a higher number of transactions...Asset Management, IB

So I got approached by a recruiter for the operations analyst internship, I have to express my interest tomorrow morning. I've looked online and i can't find much on the program and what people think so I wanted to hear your thoughts. Is it a good program is Morgan Stanley a good company?
Operations are more back office. Look what that is first and see if it piques your interest.
MS is a great company imho.
I like the idea of doing data mining and analytics, but the internship description seems to just be filled with buzz words. Which makes me feel their trying to mask something. But you said MS is good right so I show interest?
As the poster above mentioned, try to learn as much Excel/VBA to quicken up processes as much as possible. It'll be helpful to your team.
Aim for FO positions, as they're more relevant.
Pay path for Morgan Stanley Operations (Originally Posted: 12/12/2008)
If I choose to take an analyst position at MS Ops and stick with it for the long term, how fast would my pay go up? I know it's definitely not front-office pay, but I just wanna compare if I would make more in Ops or Big4 in the long term.
i was in MS's Finance division this past summer and got a ft offer. starting was 60 plus 5 and I believe you increase about 10% a year with a very minimal bonus 5k'ish? So after getting promoted in 2 years, i think there would be another bonus, your yearly bonus increases and another extra increase in salary (15-20%?)
Probably base goes like this: 60-66k - year 1 and 2, 75-80k - years 3-6, probably 90k after that until VP where you'll probably be making 100-110..my guess. These are all not including bonuses which of course fluctuates with the market and your position.
keep in mind this is for Finance div, not ops..so numbers might be a little less. hope this helps!

Hello, I have been selected for an interview with Morgan Stanley for an operations analyst position. Can you guys tell me things to talk about during the interview, and what do you think is the knowledge needed to perform this job? Thank you
I am interested in this as well, but for JPM.
When I did the Citi operations super day back in the day, it was all behavioral/fit questions: Walk me through your resume, why Citi, why operations, strengths/weaknesses, what do you think you'll contribute, etc. They also may try to get a feel of what type of operations work you'd be interested in, I highly recommend steering towards project management work.
