So I just finished The Social Network, and although encouraged by a few drinks I think this movie is going to be the next Wall Street.
I say this in the sense that Wall Street inspired so many young men to study and improve their understanding of business in thinking this was the next gateway to nirvana. I feel that the Social Network and the detailed story, although told with the troubled personality of Mr. Zuckerberg thrown over the viewer like an extremely heavy overcoat, displays the possibilities of owning ones own ideas and running with them.
Obviously though this movie could have painted mark in a different light but, taking that into account can it be seen that this movie has strong inspirational qualities?
Wasn't really his idea though was it.......haha jk....but maybe not.
I left the theater with the exact same thought. Like Wall Street, I think it was intended to be, and will come off as a cautionary tale to those without a strong interest in the industry, but it will be inspirational to many budding entrepreneurs.

What I came away with is that, the general public is enamored with the concept of coming up with a great idea. However, they don't understand that ideas don't matter, the execution does. Its also in the execution where the hard work happens.
Tons of startups did things similar to Facebook. CUconnect etc even used the college by college concept. Zuckerberg beat them out via good execution.
But alas, thats why the vast majority of the people remain just that: the majority.

bad idea + good execution can get you some money excellent idea + poor execution can get you some money excellent idea + excellent execution will get you loaded
But, I'm not sold a bad idea + good execution won't result in a load of money either. I mean, seriously some of the things that becomes a hit are pretty stupid.

I agree, Matt. For me, Sean Parker was the most compelling character in the movie and the one most Wall Streeters could relate to. Just my opinion.
His character was like a hipster Bud Fox (even though they tried to make him look like Gekko). I thought it was a great movie overall, and a highly fascinating story to boot.
I didn't think of Sean Parker as the mentor when I watched it the first time but looking back he definitely fills that role just as Gekko does in WS.
I thought it was a great movie as well, definitely inspirational for wannabe entrepeneurs

The Sean Parker character is every MBAs wet dream. Roll in, be flashy, take a chunk of equity without adding any value, just on the virtue of being a rock star. In real life though, Parker is smart and has a ton of startup insight; something an MBA can't provide.
Agree completely. Found it very inspirational. Ironically Zuckerberg doesnt care about money in contrast to Wall Street, although I suppose theyre both chasing power. Equally entertaining as it is captivating. After I saw it I found myself wanting to learn how to write code and brainstorming new ideas.

i had to address this comment. facebook is not a great start up, nor is it a game-changing innovation. the exact same thing existed before. remember friendster and myspace? ya, me neither. heard of bebo and orkut? ya, me neither.
i think the real reason facebook is facebook and not friendster is b/c it doesnt have a stupid name and b/c it started with college students. and probably also b/c it had a dead simple interface.
internet social networks are a weird phenomenon.
i completely disagree with you. facebook is completely different than any other social network. think about when you are on the web, on websites that are not facebook, how often you see the facebook logo? how many different sites can you like content. the brilliance of facebook, unlike other social networking sites, is that it connects people with ideas. it may not have much revenue, but this site has fundamentally changed the web in a way you cannot even begin to understand.
think about why google is so big. google puts you in touch with different sites, different ideas, etc. now think about facebook. facebook not only puts you in touch with those ideas, it connects you to those ideas. it lets you interact with different web pages. and best of all, all of it is inside the facebook network. a google search cannot breach the facebook intra network. a facebook search can.
im sorry, but anyone who thinks facebook is a fad is a fool. when myspace came out, did you see the myspace logo on billboards? did you walk around and see businesses advertising 'find us on myspace'. but you see that with facebook. this site is big. zuckerburg knows it. why do you think the guy hasn't sold it yet. its cause it is nowhere near its full potential. idk, personally i dont think you understand how ingrained in our culture facebook has become in four years. do you realize that when facebook hit college campuses when it debuted, half a campus would be on it within fifteen days (according to the book The Facebook effect). That is an absurd statistic. Tell me one website in history that has that kind of pull once it gets introduced to a group of people.
