What do to before summer trading internship? - got one month
I will start working in late June and my semester officially finishes in late May if not any earlier- it depends on how professors schedule their finals. So I have one good month between May and June and I don't want to spend this time procrastinating or wasting over nothing. Here are the few options that I have considered so far:
-
working at a boutique or any small company related to finance. probably unpaid. (it's mostly for the experience that I'm hungry for.) will have to explain why I can only work for 4 weeks.
-
working at a non-profit as a volunteer. I have one or two fields of particular interest.
-
working on any part time job to make some money and have fun.
-
meeting new people as well as the people that I already know; building connections.
-
reading the markets, spending some time analyzing them.
-
studying some quantitative stuff and pricing models.
-
acquiring some programming skills.
-
reading books, newspapers, or basically whatever I like.
-
trading my own account. (I am likely to be working on the currency trading desk, so better knowing the basics of FX spot and options)
-
combinations of above.
-
relax, just know my shit and forget about the pressure that I will soon be getting.
-FYI, traveling is not an option for me as of now.
Or would there be other things to do? I hope to hear from the past summer interns who've undergone the same route one or more years ago. Thanks!
Lot of those things can be done together. If you want to go into trading, maybe: - Learn programming: If you still have a year or 2 left at college, then do this through an actual intro course at college. - Read a book on quant stuff (personal choice here. I like quant stuff...so this would be "leisure reading" for me.): 1 month is ideal for reading a book without making it seem torturous. - Keep up with markets: Will directly help you for your internship. - Trade your own account: same as above. - Relax the rest of day, party, and recharge for your internship.
Thanks for your input, unqwertyfied. How much will those things be of actual help once I start working, by the way?
option 12) bang bitches on the beach
This is a joke right?
Why should this be a joke? I am not intent on doing everything listed above nor do I think I have enough time to do most of them.
Plus, I had enough fun in my summer of freshmen and sophomore years, now's the time to focus on my careers I guess...
if i had some, bananas to you feenans
I'm sorry, I am usually pretty accepting of everything posted on this board, but come on.
What ever happened to making a pretty simple decision on your own?
This isn't like a "MS Equity Research or GS Equity Research" question. It's solely based on personal preference. Obviously, some of those things will be helpful to your internship, so do them. You can also relax too; you have a summer gig and should bask in a few weeks of no school or work.
Like, is "meeting new people" and "making connections" something you wake up and go do? And can that seemingly ridiculous month-long venture not be done at the same time as reading a book and doing some volunteering?
Jesus, it seems like finance is just going to be full of robots.
GO RELAX, you will get your experience at your internship. Grab some finance books that interest you.
All of those look like good options but definitely develop some programming skills. When I interned in trading (FI), I was programming every day
I don't think this is the dumbest question ever, unless every junior on WSO is pretty sure about what he/she wants to do before starting internships and I am the only one left behind. I don't want to come unprepared for the job this summer, nor would I want to spend 7/24 working and studying before the real work starts.
Time management is essential, so I was merely asking what would be the best combo of things one can do to spend some time worthwhile. I'm looking for some advice here(thanks to those who gave one), not sarcasm.
seriously? you are going to be working for the rest of your life. youre only in college once. get drunk and bang chicks.
I think it's funny that everyone on this board assumes each other (unless username BANKERGIRL) is a guy...
Precisely.
fine get drunk and bang dudes then. your preference
porter9900: point taken. haha.
Doesn't matter if you're male or female, the advice still stands.
Get drunk and bang chicks.
Travel....this will be one of your last opportunities for a while to do so
No need to purposely go "work" or "learn." But keeping up with the markets and the big picture of things will help you in your job and building connections.
I second Edmundo Braverman comment, and in between you can read and relax.
On a more serious note: Since your going to be a trader. You should keep up with the economist and read several trading books.
Come into my trading room by Alex Elder--an absolute classic and a must read for any serious trader
Both Market Wizards books by Jack Schwager. These are really fun reads.
You can also look for something fun like Liar's Poker, Fool's Gold, or The Partnership: The Rise of Goldman Sachs
What product are you looking to trade?
Man, go out have fun and relax, you don't need to work your entire life. Plus no one wants a "know it all" intern, remember your there to learn, so LEARN there.
My advice go to Europe, or South America or to the Caribbean and enjoy your self.
If I could, I'd like to travel across South America or Eastern Europe, but this is clearly not an option for me. (sigh)
2 words Lawn mower
Option 12 sounds good
Do coke and munchie as much as you can....
Last time I had downtime, I DJ'd for some time. I otherwise second the chick banging option.
lol diddo. Quote from Little Miss Sunshine: "You should be gettin' that young stuff. That young stuff is the best stuff in the whole world. See, right now you're jailbait, they're jailbait. It's perfect. I mean, you hit 18, man! You're talkin' about three to five. "
