Tech News...Where to go?

I'm greatly interested in joining a tech industry group at a bulge bracket (or perhaps going to a firm such as Qatalyst Partners).

The dilemma I have right now is where to go to get the latest news on the tech industry. The Wall Street Journal and NYT Dealbook have news on EVERYTHING. Is there a resource I could use to focus on tech specifically?

Tech section of the WSJ.

"It is better to have a friendship based on business, than a business based on friendship." - Rockefeller. "Live fast, die hard. Leave a good looking body." - Navy SEAL

How about Tech Crunch. Or wired, engadget, Gizmodo etc. That will give you a lot of news on technology. I mean, frankly, I'd go and look at those and then follow links from those (or just google one) and you should have a bunch of options.

Heavy tech? This might be the wrong place to ask for that information. Anyone on WSO with an interest in tech will probably only read one of the sites you mentioned.

looking for that pick-me-up to power through an all-nighter?

yeah I mean things like NFC and RFID development...HTML5...Oracle DB development etc. etc...

I thought this would be a good question for individuals that cover certain companys within the tech industry

You should check out Quora.com

Its a question and answer site, but it has many techies from SV. This question has been asked several times for some of the topics you mentioned, so you can search for it and find a good list of resources.

Get a rss feeder or something. Get all the blogs like techcruch, etc and have them flow in every day. Content aggregation from multiple sources are incredible for this. Get on twitter and follow every tech related person and blog you can find. I guarantee you that you will get extraordinary information from there.

excellent post above, definitely start there. the usual supects to throw in on top of everything mentioned in that post would be TechCrunch, Techmeme (aggregator), GigaOm, PandoDaily, AllThingsD and WSJ Tech, VentureBeat, Hacker News, Wired... there are others but those are the ones I check every day without fail and find to have consistently good content, some others can be a little too fluffy/stupid. Brad Feld's blog is a must (feld.com), Bijan Sabet's blog is also pretty good (http://bijansabet.com/), as are Andrew Chen's and Hunter Walk's. Twitter is also a phenomenal resource for tech/VC news if you're following the right people, starting with everyone mentioned so far, major VC players, execs, journalists and writers, etc. good luck!

Follow up question, how would you recommend reading these sites? Sometimes there's just a random deal on TechCrunch or a new round of funding for xyz company... if I read these sites on a regular basis, will the framework and context of these events become intuitive or is there a more strategic/efficient way to go about it?

I'd start with reading TechCrunch, AllThingsD, The Verge maybe GizModo, on a fairly regularly basis, just to get familiar with the industry. Not gonna help you learn revenue drivers for mid-size enterprise storage firms, but that's not really your value-add as a summer anyway.
