Do you use your MBA every day?

A canadian investment banker talked about MBAs here. Most of the interview is a bunch of obvious truths about "Ivy league MBA being better than the rest" etc. One of the statement got my attention though:

I have used what I learned in my MBA every day: while serving clients, as a manager (and prior CEO) of our firm and within all of my not-for-profit and teaching roles.

I don't have a MBA, so maybe i'm just jealous but how can you use your MBA every day?

I mean:

  • The financial modeling content is available everywhere and who uses that at the CEO/CFO/MD level anyway?
  • He seems to point at the "case study" part. Could it be it? As a senior person in finance do you use the strategy lessons you learned in MBA? The possibility seems a bit remote but...
  • The only thing that seems real is the networking. But the guy doesn't mention it in his article. That's the part you can use every day. And also the reputation of the degree.
  • I'm not hating on MBAs at all, and going to harvard is an investment I understand. But really who uses the content every day?

DontMakeMeShortYou:
Theoretically, I also use what I learned in kindergarten every day... sharing is caring, play nice with others, etc etc... MBA is for the connections unless you really need to learn accounting/finance.

This.

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

I could see some things being used. Marketing, operations, networking, communications... I would think you pretty much need that at the CEO level if you want to come up with a strong vision for the company. I don't know about modeling being used though. That'd be out there.

This quote sounds like it came from a guy that is insecure or just trying to make himself sound good. It all comes down the experience, the more you have, the better you are at something. Doing a few case studies in school may have set the direction to start in, but once you work and gain experience, that becomes your real education.

The value from an MBA is from recruiting. Especially in today's market
