Tucking in shirts

Hi guys,

So I've bought 2 slim fit shirts form Jos A. Banks.

I understand that it won't fit me like the model wearing the shirt, but I'm not trying to have it fit me like a second skin. I went to the store and got myself measured (15.5" and 35"), but I just find it to be overly baggy and was thinking I just don't know how to tuck my shirt in properly. It feels kinda dumb asking, but is there some kind of a method to this madness?

I'm open to any other suggestions too.

You might feel kinda ridiculous wearing these the first couple times, but take it from me - they work like a champ:

Super Shirt Stays

Your shirt will never come untucked again, and you'll look sharp all day.

I don't know what to say. I've never heard of such a thing.

It's an old military thing. We used to call them our "garters". The ones we used had a clip at the top and the bottom so while they were pulling your shirttail down they were also pulling your socks up. No more untucked shirts, and no more socks falling into your shoes. Whamo-slammo.

These are the ones we used:

Rothco Black Military 4-Piece Straight Shirt Stays

I ordered this for more of a work wardrobe. I got my size checked, so I guess its the right size, but it still billows. I guess that's the story with ready made shirts.

I have the same problem with JAB shirts. They're cut for the average American.. i.e. fat guys. They have no taper to them, so the waist and chest measurement are the same. I think the do this so they can upsell the tailoring charge. If you're going to buy shirts there, I recommend buying the regular fit shirts and getting them tailored. I find the slim fit shirts to be tight in the shoulders because they narrow everything on them, not just the waist.

Yeah its all about making the shirts according to the bell curve. I find that the shirt fits my chest and shoulders well enough. I've been doing the military tuck thing and am getting it, but it always ends up with the shirt billowing a right under the shoulder because the sleeve opening is too low.

This sounds like a major risk to my cojones. Do I get an insurance plan with it? xD

On a serious note, I'll look into the stays. Appreciate the advice. I'm still looking to hear about any other ideas.

I used to shop at Banks and bought their slim fit shirts and was also disappointed with how baggy they were. Then I switched to Hugo Boss "sharp fit" style shirts (or even regular fit, those are still better than Banks) and was impressed. Wait until they go on sale. Nordstrom has a sale a few times a year and the shirts become around $60 or so. Works well for me anyway.

You just need to buy slimmer fitting shirts. Brooks Brothers Extra Slim it what I imagine a normal shirt should fit like, as a reference.

I second many of those above. Not all "slim fits" are created equal. I consider myself to be a fairly average sized guy (6'0", 170 lbs) and I find the Hugo Boss slim fits fit okay along with the Thomas Pink super slim.

If 6'0" 170 lbs is average, I'm fucked.

lol, he is in Asia, methinks.

How are long hours an excuse to eat like shit? Fine, you can't set aside a couple of hours a week to lift. But does that Big Mac increase your returns?

And even if you must eat unhealthy food, just eat less of it. There is no excuse to be fat.

6'0 170 def. aint average, esp for an industry where ppl spend all day sitting on their butts.

I've had to work really hard to get to somewhere comparable to that number for my height and would say I'm definitely below average (good side).

You guys have pretty low expectations. 6' 170lb shouldn't be your goal unless you can do 15 chinups at that weight.

That is because in regards to fit and quality, JAB is along the same lines as shopping at Walmart.

There are plenty of better options for slims fitting shirts that aren't tight. I'm 6'0" and 180 and H&M (while cheap and horrible), are usually cut pretty well and have a nice fit, even if they only last you one year they're only $40 too... or less.

eternal_man design:

Bring your shirts to a tailor and get them altered.

If I was to do this, about how much would it cost?

It depends what you want done. If it fits in the shoulders (armhole seams line up with your shoulders), the sleeve length is correct, and the collar fits, it's not gonna cost much. You can have the sides brought in, which will narrow the body and the sleeves, if you want. That'll cost $20 at the most. My tailor in the suburbs does it for less than the tailor I go to in Chicago. I think that that will usually be the case. Any drycleaning alterations place should be able to do it. Pay them in cash and be courteous and they'll give you better deals next time.

If the sleeves fit throughout, you can have the back darted, which costs less than having the sides taken in. This will adjust only the body width. Shouldn't cost more than $15.

Pull your pants up more. Seriously, most people tuck their shirts in and put their pants on their hips and it will balloon in the back and sides. Wear them properly and it will go away plus make your upper body look bigger. Serious...

Agreed on making your upper body look bigger, but at the same time they make my buttocks look huge.

Hugo Boss shirts are really good, find them on sale like one of the posters above me said. I paid a fortune for them at regular price

The only correct answer is to have them tailored.

If there's just a bit of spare fabric, you should fold it over itself in two even parts on the left and right side of your back at the waist when tucking and then button your pants.

You're probably going to need tailoring or go MTM if you're having that much trouble finding shirts that fit you properly. . If you can find a shirt that fits you in the collar/shoulders/upper chest, you can taper bottom half of the shirt+put in darts in the back.

I haven't worn a shirt to work for months. Problem solved .

I LOL'd

CT Slim fit, non iron, take in the sides a little. I'm 6 foot, 190 pounds, 6% BF and they fit fine. Thomas Pink slim fit are also good, but pretty much everything else needs to be tailored to the point where I don't bother.

I reckon you need to put on some lbs, fill the shirt. Nordstrom trim fit is a bit more snug/more eurpean'ish.... I'm often worried my biceps may cause the shirt to rip at the seams. Well, not anymore but back in my glory day....

How much do you guys weigh/what's your BMI exactly? I'm 6'4 and fluctuate between 190-195. While it takes a bit of effort to not turn into a gelatinous blob, it isn't impossible or extremely difficult to do so. Sounds like a slew of excuses.

BMI is a flawed formula. Why? Because I could be 6'1 and weigh 200lbs at 8% body fat and be in the top 90% of healthy individuals, but my BMI would be about 26.5 and report that I am overweight.

I HATE that at the Dr's. office they report my BMI when I go in for a check up. I prefer to gauge whether I'm healthy or not by how I look in the mirror and my BF%. If you're trying to stay in shape and be relatively fit you should push yourself to hit the gym if your BF cracks above 13%.

Thanks bro, actually meant to put body fat % instead of BMI lol. I wholeheartedly agree with you though.

Just to throw a hat in the ring I'm 6'4", weight around 165 and considered in the 'normal' weight range. BMI of 20.1

It's Jos A Bank not "jos a banks" big guy, and just buy some slimfits from brooks brothers next time, they are a lot more fitted to a slim frame.

Alright fella, I'll make sure to never bastardize their impeccable name again.

Just so you know, when I was outside the store I believe it read Brooks Brothers, not "brooks brothers". See what a waste of time that was.

Anyways, it's the same story with them. It fits my shoulders and upper chest fine, but from around the lower chest, there's just too much fabric.

Zargo

Jos A Bank fits are god awful. I find shirts from Banana Republic/J Crew to fit way better.

I suppose we live and learn lol. I'll check out those brands.

tl;dr all the comments so I apologize if this has been mentioned already... Find a cheap tailor. Most likely in Chinatown. For $15-30 you can get those shirts (and sleeves) at tight as you want em! I've found Regular Fit shirts that I liked the style so much that I considered the tailor fees into the purchase price and still got them. I have to shorten a lot of my sleeves too and that runs be about $10. It's quite a bit more if you need to bring in the shoulders though ($40 @ my tailor). It's worth it for your clothes to fit right.

Sorry, don't live there. Ask around the office/classroom/family. Or Google it and call around for pricing and read online review.

I think you get the picture. Don't ever buy JAB again if you want to actually wear what you bought and look good in it. Don't bother with a tailor, their stuff isn't made that well either. There's a reason why it's all so cheap. The best part is, at least you know.

Also...I'm 6', 160-165 (depends on the week) and I am sure as fuck not fat. In fact, I'd like to put on a decent amount of muscle mass. Can't remember my most recent body fat measurement but I want to say it was close to 8%. Haven't worked out regularly in months. Should have, but got lazy. Thank god I eat well and have a high metabolism. If you're 6', 160-170, and fat...I don't know what the fuck to tell you. You'd have to literally have no muscle tissue at all.

Honestly everything mentioned above works for me and is better than JAB. You'll thank yourself when you put the shirts on and they actually fit haha. And they will feel nicer too. I had a couple things from JAB once....never fucking again. I wouldn't be caught dead in it now. And yeah I think some people here have a misguided view of weight/height. If you're at all like me you're probably borderline thin as a rail. I'm trying to bulk but with a high metabolism and my lack of working out its hard.

"When you stop striving for perfection, you might as well be dead."

You should probably tuck your dick too just to be safe. Just grab it by the tip, pull it back toward your asshole. And duct tape it to your gooch.

Seriously though, you don't know how to tuck your shirt? Take the tail and put it inside your fucking pants. Not exactly rocket surgery.

Monkeyfaces

Never set foot in JAB ever again, and go to Kamakura on Madison Ave if you're looking for good shirts. They're made in Japan, great quality, and have the best collars I've ever seen on shirts that cheap. They're only $79, go for either the Tokyo or New York slim fit, and all your billowing problems will be solved.

I'm only stepping in to return this shit haha Thanks for the tip.
