bad grade in financial accounting-Will it haunt me in MBA admissions
As a second-year undergraduate, I had the misfortune of being put in the MBA section of financial accounting. Therefore, the curve was much tougher, and I ended up getting a C+ in the class despite having a fairly good understanding of the material. Would it be worth retaking this class later if I have the chance and trying to get an A? Otherwise, my overall GPA is pretty okay (3.4) in a moderately difficult major (econ) from a USNWR top 5 school. I think I can crack 750+ on my GMAT as well by my fourth year. I'm also interning at a middle market investment bank this summer and may be able to graduate in 3 years if I can secure a job offer there. I'm also a school athlete and have some pretty good leadership on campus.
I'm aiming for HBS, Wharton, Stanford, Columbia, Chicago Booth, Kellogg, etc.
Retake it.
youll NEVER get in because of one bad grade
Yeah, I'm currently a sophomore, and I feel like the exams were designed more for MBA students than undergraduates I think. That's probably why I did poorly on them. Say, late in my 3rd year, I have a free spot in my schedule, would it be worth taking financial accounting again if I can for sure get an A or A-?
Yes, retake it. If you turn that C+ into an A it turns your 3.4 into what, a 3.6? Obviously that is a huge jump. That take's you from reaching to getting into top 35 MBA programs to reaching for top 15. Anything less then a B (or B+ in some cases) retake.
If anything, the MBA sections at my target are less competitive than the undergrad sections.
very true
One of my worst grades in college was financial accounting. It didn't prevent me from getting into a top school and I lack many of the credentials you have. I do recommend re-taking the class, but don't feel the grade alone will prevent you from succeeding. Also, I wouldn't blame your bad grade on the fact that it was an MBA class. Most people will not sympathize with you on that one.

Yep, an 80 on a test will prevent you from getting a job at any bank. Better start networking with Enterprise Rent-a-car.
Obvious troll is obvious.
honestly thought you were trolling until I looked at your precedent posts
If you are not trolling...calm down ! an 80 on a test and ending with a 3.8 gpa is acceptable for any job. Your bigger concern should be controlling your clear perfectionism and anxiety enough to network/make people want to work with you during interviews and once of the job.
honestly not trolling, just having an anxiety attack because so much of i banking is financial accounting , and my lowest grade is going to be financial accounting. believe it or not im really a pretty laid back guy in person, its just that on wso im cloaked in anonymity so i can be brutally honest about my insecurities.
If this gives you an anxiety attack, then you won't be able to handle the pressure of banking. Seriously.
Why would an 80 on one test limit you to an 88 in the class? Maybe study harder and spend more time in office hours for the rest of the semester and you can do better?
Ok fair....but to be brutally honest...as long as you don't pull a C or below..you are fine...now study hard for Exam #2 and go from there
lol i agree! im gonna do that. ill be in office hours all the time this semester and im gonna study my ass off, but im gonna miss some lectures and quizzes for networking trips to NYC, and i like to play the worst case scenario game, like right now my gpa is a good amount higher than 3.8 and the prof curves the class by about 4 points, but i just want to make sure if i dont pull the grade up to an A, my chances of getting into a top bank aren't ruined
...Almost no companies have ever asked me or any of my friends for a transcript. And if they have, it's after they've decided to hire the interviewee and want to make sure that the GPA isn't a lie. I'm starting to think most people on this site need to get a Valium prescription or something. "Does a 3.8 GPA ruin my life?", "Does buying slightly cheaper shoes ruin my chance at a megafund?"...I mean come on.
Your 80 won't kill your chances, but your inability to exercise judgment and/or establish a reasonable perspective regarding minutiae will likely destroy you
No it won't kill your chances, but I do wonder how you got an 80 in intro accounting (assuming the class average is higher). The material isn't difficult.
class average was a 76, but everyone in my school is retarded, and yeah i know im freaking out, its something i have to keep a lid on, but honestly, is there a better place in the world to vent / have a mini melt down than on wso?!? its a great way to get it out of my system and then move on with life
When you apply to these banks they typically do not check your transcript until after you get an offer just to make sure you weren't lying about your GPA. It's not like MBA admissions where they dig into your transcript where being weak in quantitative classes may hurt you.
Why don't you just apply to Mcdonald's as a frycook or a cashier?
well damn i still want hbs, sbs or wharton, and saints2009 do you think mcdonalds will accept me? how can i be a cashier if i cant do basic debits and credits?!?
ROFL! I literally Rofl'd
You'll be fine. The odds of a given bank asking you for your transcript are slim-to-none; and if they do, they will ask for it after they hire you. At that point, the fact that you got a B+ in accounting will not cause them to rescind their offer.
With that said, definitely work to get higher than an 80...not for your GPA, but for your own good. Accounting isn't exhilarating, but knowing it abundantly well is absolutely critical.
Dude I'm fucking with you.
yeah im more worried about them asking me in the interview what i got in accounting just cause its very relevant to investment banking. whatever ill just get an A in the class so i dont have to worry about it
saints 2009, lol if i didnt know you were fucking with me, id be fucked. then again if my gpa slides any more i might have to lower my sights to burger king
trolls trolling trolls trolling trolls
To be honest, I would be more worried about coming from a non-target school for the positions and firms you're looking at
Dude, Burger King? That's king shit. Your like, Arby status. Worse than Mickey D's
Sandsurfngbomber - networking can overcome being from a non target, unless you think that people will look at my school and toss me out right away, I'm actually not too worried about that. My school is really cheap, so I don't want to transfer and go into piles of debt. Really in my opinion saying my family wasn't wealthy and I had to go to a 'lesser' school for financial reasons and work my way through it while working 100 times harder than all these Harvard and Wharton idiots just to get an interview, is actually a plus because it shows I didn't just ride daddy's Porche to Wall Street: I had to work my ass off to get there. Also I got 2300+ SAT score so it is actually believable when I say I could have gone somewhere else
