Best mattress?
Anyone recommend a mattress that will provide an amazing nights sleep. When you're dead tired and are only getting shut-eye for a few hours you want the best sleep possible. I'm thinking of optimizing on the mattress and would like some recommendations.
Has anyone slept or tried a Hastens mattress? These swedish "luxury beds" go for an assload of money, an entry level goes for 4k easily and I've seen them go up to 65k+. I'm assuming they are handmade and infused with the blood sweat and tears of 1000 small toddler hands.
I never understood why matresses are generally so expensive...can somebody enlighten me please? Sure the "technology" going into a mattress is not 5x more expensive than that of , say, LCD tvs
tempur pedic... i hear theyre amazing
I sleep in a hammock - tried it on my gap year - loved it - never slept better
Pretty much anything made of memory foam. TempurPedic is a big name, but there are knock-offs (I sleep on a Scandinavian and I've never had a better night's sleep). Just don't buy something with springs.
The mattress salesman will tell you that spring technology has improved, pillow-tops have been added, etc... in an effort to get you to buy a bed that will wear out and you won't be happy with long term. I paid a little over $2,000 for my Scandinavian (King size) and it was worth every penny. Stick with the foam technology. And make them throw in a couple memory foam pillows while you're at it. Fantastic the way they conform to your head.
Sex on a memory foam bed takes a little getting used to, so be warned. The bed doesn't have the "give" that a traditional spring bed has, so when you lay the pipe there's not going to be any "shock absorption", so to speak. True story.
Haha, nice post edmundo, although I have to slightly disagree. I have a memory foam mattress too (the entry level TPeudic), and sex on the bed was very easy to get used to. The mattress/bed makes NO SOUND, and your body conforms to the bed, essentially locking it in. Arguably the best investment I have ever made.
this is interesting because i was about to get a mattress too and didn't really know what to think about foam. i guess ill go try one out. thanks guys
im actually sick of my tempurpedic and i dont think i;ll get a new one next year...
its really annoying that when the apt is cold the bed is like a rock and if the apt is hot its a little too soft... (yes i know tempur pedic means that it does that) anyway im going to go back to springs--my roommates bed is way more comfortable and yeah sex on the foam is weird
I'm adverse to those tempur pedic mattresses since they started advertising in infomercials so I'm guessing there is a lot of hype to them, but I think they're worth a shot.
I'm thinking the Hastens mattress is a separate league of its own, it's like the bed sells itself according to the web research I've done. I don't see that much of a difference between the other brands out there.
Tempur pedic is legit, definitely worth the money. Although, I'm not a big fan of the pillows. My freakishly large head is better suited for a regular down pillow.
The best thing you can do is go to a mattress store and lay down on a bunch. Everyone has different wants when it comes to firm vs. soft. Yes, there will always be someone willing to sell you an inexcusably expensive mattress, but that doesn't mean it'll give you better sleep.
Also, mattresses are expensive for the same reason bikes tend to be very expensive. The majority of their sales are sold through dealer models as opposed to websites. A heavy markup comes from the dealers. Look around though, you'll find a good deal!
also, keep in mind there are different levels of tempur pedic... entry foamy (but still cool), cloud-like, and baller-status. and recently they've improved the construction of the foam while still keeping its awesomeness.

Can anyone suggest a good mattress? I prefer something soft.
Are the tempurpedics any good?
As always, your responses will be greatly appreciated.
A buddy of mine dropped nearly a grand and bought himself a nice giant-sized tempurpedic. He claims to get at least 50% more rest from having switched. I use a tempurpedic pillow myself and it is wonderful. The only downside of the tempurpedic bed is it takes a lot of the vital "bounce" out of the mattress, if you know what I mean.
if nothing else, i think its awesome that your buddy is able to quantify the increase in the amount of rest as a percentage...kudos
and no i dont mean it as an asshole comment, i read it and gave myself a chuckle...to the original poster...sorry i have no clue, but best of luck!
thats bs..... more like well over a grand... the smallest tempurpedic sells for 1500.... the giant size is probably 3000....... mabye he didnt buy the original...... i prefer my sealy posturepedic to the tempurpedic..tempurpedic droops too much.... you tend to sink on the bed.... the bounce is def needed....
I also noticed that target is selling something that looks similar to tempurpedic for like 200, yet when I go to their official store the twin sized tempurpedic is roughly 2000. Can someone explain the differences and such?
I actually have the tempurpedic twin long in my dorm and its amazing--I used some summer cash to buy it and I definitely get way more rest on it, especially compared to a crappy dorm mattress. I'm already saving for a bigger one when i graduate.
Also, the original one is only $999 for a full size. http://www.tempurpedic.com/TempurCMSVB/sleepsystems/OriginalBed/
It's a fuckin' mattress, just buy the cheapest one you can find and spend your money on booze. Heck, I could sleep on a pile of rocks and not know the difference. Kids these days.
While my comment was clearly made with some humor added, my friend definitely claimed 50% more sleep!
PS Gofigure000, I just cracked up reading your response to my post. My girlfriend was next to me and now thinks I am completely psycho.
yes my gf would probably think that im a psycho as well...but i think the better answer is that we're just investment bankers, and in our world...its legit
Top 10 matresses anyone? Best bed exit-opps? Been far too long since we have ranked anything.
Alright, lets make this a legitimate discussion :-)
I'm loyal to Stearns & Foster. I think I paid about $1800 for mine years ago... a lot of money but I do love my bed.
I have a good friend who bought a Sealy mattress a few months ago with one of those modern cushion tops. He's had a miserable experience and returned it. They suck... apparently he's not the only one as there's a high return on those types of mattresses.
BTW, sometimes your pillow choice is more important to getting well rested sleep vs. a mattress.
Wait a second, how much do one of these bitches cost on average ? The numbers you guys are throwing out are insane.
Yup, the price tage freaks most people out in the beginning.
On average a good mattress is going to be $1500+. Bear in mind, a quality mattress implies a longevity of 15+ years. Who's going to keep a mattress for 15 years? Sounds gross right?
Well, you're supposed to care for your mattress, i.e. flip it, rotate it, use a mattress cover, etc. The investment translates to an annual cost of say $100/yr.
Ditto for a well constructed sofa with 8-way hand tied springs, kiln-dried frames etc. yadda yadda...
Seanc, you have to be a smart consumer on some things... mattresses, linens with a high thread count, dentistry and good shoes.
Eh' but don't fret over this silly stuff... with your charm and wit you'll get married to a foxy lady who will take good care of you and have these things under control :-)
Do you wanna feel my muscles pepsi ??
Oh, yes. May I?

I'm about to buy a new mattress and I'm thinking about getting a memory foam mattress. Just curious if anybody's got one, and what they think about it? Basically, I just want to make sure they're actually comfortable before spending the $.
Nah bro, get a firm spring mattress and then a separate memory foam topper (it's like 4 inches thick). You get the softness from the memory foam, but you still have the bounciness / support from the spring mattress. Ideal combination, trust me. And I think it's cheaper too than the complete memory foam mattress.
I bought two memory foam mattresses from overstock.com. One when I went to college and one after graduation when I moved. They were both great and I since I picked them up relatively cheap I don't have to worry about bringing them with me when I move cities. I would definitely recommend getting one - plus girls love how comfortable they are.
Agreed. Completely. With this post and the one above. So much more worth it, cheaper and a lot more comfortable. I got mine from Costco for about 100 or 200, can't remember. I'm a girl and will vouch for the last comment, whenever I have girl friends come over they all flock to my bed because it's so comfy. Go with the foam topper.
Sleepnumber is the way to go hands down.
I had a memory foam for a few years. Takes some getting used to. Be mindful of the toxic fumes that these things emit. Some people are allergic.
While you're at it, memory foam pillows are awesome too.
Worth it. Don't forget the memory foam pillow either.
I have a memory foam topper that is awesome and yes, ladies love it. Make sure you look at the density specs cuz the less dense ones are less comfortable and fall apart faster. I think the best ones are around 5.3 whatever units and are much more expensive (like Tempurpedic).
Oh, are we still answering op's question or should we let hpm and vivlee duke it out and exchange numbers?
Don't think anyone will be getting my number anytime soon ;)
back on topic
go for the topper cause the full mattress isn't ideal for sex
i bought a high end one with my first year signing bonus. best decision i ever made.
just make sure you have a decent A/C for the summer though, or it will feel like you're sleeping on a marshmallow.
Damn texttiles, ive always wanted to know about how shirts are made!
Well you're in luck big shot :) http://www.enotes.com/how-products-encyclopedia/t-shirt
I'm a big enough man to say this: Well Played...
but seriously make me a sandwich.
Go carry my groceries first, and take out the trash. Then we'll talk about that sandwich. If you trim the trees, mulch the flower beds and rake the leaves I can negotiate lemonade or ice tea with that too.
And you're lucky I actually enjoy cooking.
Man this is entertaining, lol. vivlee, are you at least hot?
Regards
Are you at least hot???
Scroll to 0:45. You're pretty much doing the same shit.
It would be epic if VivLee turns out to be a dude.
Excuse my language but what kind of fucktard goes on WSO and pretends to be a chick.
You may be a chick, but a lady, you are not.
Regards
You'd be surprised, the kinds of people we get on WSO.
If this thread is still going... yeah man, memory foam is the way to go. I picked up a mattress from sams or costco for like 500 and its great. Ladies love it and no complaints about the sex.
Seriously happy, how many hot chicks have you seen at banking/trading interviews, or are prospective monkeys. No girl in her right mind who is a 7+ would work 100+ hours a week when she can find a guy to do that for her.
HPM you are the man, thanks for the solid 2 minutes of laughing my ass off.
What the heck is up with this?
Regards
thread went to shit.
viv, post a pic without face. a nice rack+body will put a lot of our doubts to rest.
didn't know I was on 4chan haha
If I am running a company and have to promote one of two equally qualified candidates, one being male and the other being female, I am going to choose the candidate that does not get all emotional every time that special time of the month comes around. Emotional thinking leads to irrational thinking. Why take a risk?
Not going to even waste my energy on dumbshit like this.

Girls can snap at any moment, they could have 10 years of excellent service under their belt, then BOOM, it just all melts down. Girls and especially menopausal women are unpredictable. If you were gearing up for war and the weapons manufacturer told you that 85% of the bullets are going to work, 75% of the time, how would that make you feel?
I don't think I even need to respond to that.
You're probably right, most people will probably agree with you, mainly because what I am saying is very far from being politically correct.
I hooked up with a chick recently that said her goals in life were to (verbatim quote), "Marry a rich bro, asap. Start popping out babies, asap. Go to lunch with my besties at the country club and have my husband take care of everything."
So hot.
You would absolutely LOVE my sister then.
See the problem I have is I want to go to the strip club with my besties and have my wife take care of everything. That makes me feel as though I will never be married, lol.
Regards
The problem with sexual equality, is one side wants shit to stay the same while the other wants things to be equal but equal in their favor. Thats why the sleepnumber bed is best for situations like this, both sides get to pick their perfect number.
OMG. Incredibly dorky of me but I just LOL-ed at this.
I'm with PIE:
Quote "Seriously happy, how many hot chicks have you seen at banking/trading interviews, or are prospective monkeys. No girl in her right mind who is a 7+ would work 100+ hours a week when she can find a guy to do that for her."
No way she is hot at all.
On a completely side note I have the whole desk rocking out to The Beach Boys....
Hahaha 66 new posts...how did I know this thread would devolve into sexist rants.
But seriously vivlee, can you be my WSO girlfriend?
vivlee we're still waiting for your pic... even if it's without a face, so be it...
Sleepy's is #1. I'm not sure what my bed is called, but I purchased a model from Sleepy's that was originally in the showroom. It was originally a $2000 mattress that I got for like $500. I'm not big on memory foam because it feels like a big sponge, and the sleepnumber reminds me of an elderly couple that complains too much. For me the most suitable option is an overpriced pillow-top mattress that I got for an unbelievable deal.
Can anyone recommend a brand for a memory foam topper?
That's why every other word to come out of my mouth when talking to a girl is a lie. They tend to be idealists, a realist needs to manipulate the facts to work with, or get laid by an idealist.
