Mod Note (Andy): #TBT Throwback Thursday - this post went up in 2011 and it follows from Part I here. Since many people have already have or are soon having first round interviews, I figured I'd accelerate this series. So rather than posting after we finish conducting first rounds at X Target School. Obviously it will be a slightly different perspective, but hopefully it will be more useful for the prospective monkeys with time sensitivity. So lets kick it off. Of the candidates we selected for interviews, you could probably categorize them into 3 buckets based on how it was decided that they got an interview: (1) The Definite Strong resume, finance/economics major; if they live up to their resume and come off as sociable, a superday is theirs for the taking

Working at McKinsey was my only career plan since my early years of undergraduate studies. I studied a lot, practised a lot. However, I couldn't succeed, Things went wrong and I got nervous during the interview. I couldn't show my ability to crack the cases. I was devastated at the end of the interview. I will never apply other consulting firms, including BCG and Bain. It is obvious that both firms lack the prestige that McKinsey have, and both of them seem somewhat inferior compared to McKinsey. I ignore Big 4 or other consulting firms, since I don't consider them as a "consulting firm". And

I have a pre-interview dinner coming up the night before an interview for an internship position. I have never been to something like this before so I am not totally sure what to be expecting. I am aware of appropriate table etiquette and the like but I am unsure about the social atmosphere i will be getting myself into.I would definitely appreciate any tips you guys/gals can throw my way. Also, is this something that every candidate who gets an interview also gets a dinner invite? Thanks. So I'm currently an intern at a boutique firm, and they didn't have myself or the other interns take the test. They are in the process, of hiring a new analyst who will start ASAP due to a personnel shortage. I have overheard them talking about the candidates Wonderlic scores. I know what the test is, and I have read that 27 is standard for an "investing analyst". I'm just curious about within the specific scope of IB, what should I know about the Wonderlic?

Hi monkeys, Earlier today I found out that I was selected for an on-campus interview with Citi for their 2020 Corporate Banking Summer Analyst position. While I'm quite excited since it will be my first financial services interview (excluding dozens of networking calls with alumni and recruiting events). With this in mind, I want to make sure that I do eveything I can to properly prepare. Any general advice and/or tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Just got an email that starts like this? "Thank you for interviewing with us. Unfortunately, you have not been chosen…" We've all been there. So to help you ease the pain, I came up with a list of the best rejection songs from my iPod... Listen and weep. 10. Metallica - St. Anger /I feel my world shake Like an earth quake Hard to see clear Is it me? Is it fear?/ 9. Linkin Park - In the End /I tried so hard And got so far But in the end It doesn't even matter I had to fall To lose it all But in the end It doesn't even matter/ 8. Hi everyone, I just got an interview with s&p for research assistant. Does anyone know anything about how the interview is like? I checked glass door already and would still like to see if anyone else had anymore information and type of questions they ask. Is it normal for a undergraduate to get this position? Also whats the ball park for pay? Thanks!

Is there any point showing up to an interview if you know you're going to be late? I imagine it'd be an auto ding anywhere. Being late to an interview Being late to an interview will usually (not always) result in being dinged automatically. Call ahead and follow through on the interview. Not showing is worse than being late. Calling ahead is a professional courtesy. If you have a legitimate reason it will help your case. from certified user @johndoe89" I showed up 30 mins late and still got my current job. If you have a legitimate reason, people understand. I know that this question has been done to death, but I was just wondering what you guys considered the do's and dont's of answering this question. Walk Me Through Your Resume Question "Walk me through your resume" and "tell me about yourself" are the two most common first questions in an interview. Almost every call and in person interview will include a variation of this question. It offers the interviewer the chance to look at your resume and offers you a chance to tell your story. Since this is the interviewer's first impression of you - it is important to have a cohesive story to tell and

After a lucky break, I have a phone call scheduled in a week from now with a global head of investment banking at a top BB. I ran into him on accident and after talking for a bit he was very insistent that I get in touch with him in the future, and now a talk is scheduled. Previous posts have not been very helpful, and I accept the fact that I am a finance neophyte, so I would like to reach out and hear advice from people who know a bit more about it than I do. I am a non traditional student that is now attending a target, and am looking for investment banking sophomore internships. My question has a couple components.

Hi, I am currently a junior at a top public school (Michigan Ross, UC Haas, UVA McIntire) and am looking at SA positions for the coming year. There is on campus recruiting for most of the big firms here (BB, EB, MM, etc.) and they start their resume drop on Nov. 29th through Jan 7th. I currently have a 3.7 GPA and am wondering whether I should apply before this semesters grades come out (~Mid December) or after? I ask this because I am afraid this semester might not go too well and I wouldn't want to put

So, I'm looking for some advice for my on-site interview next week. I've been going back and forth in my head on whether or not to mention that my girlfriend lives in the city I'm interviewing in and that being one of the drivers that led me to apply to the firm I'm interviewing with. Any thoughts? To give you some background, it's a Corp Fin role at a F500 company in the south (think: Charlotte, Richmond, etc.). I genuinely think the role/ company would be a good opportunity for employment, but the fact that my gf (of 4 years) lives in the city is definitely driving my relocation efforts. I

Just wanted some feedback. I have an interview coming up for a l/s equity hf with $10B in AUM. I have seen several posts that say its best to pitch mid-cap stocks for which the interviewer will be less familiar. I understand the logic here, but is it really that harmful to pitch large-cap stocks? I am very excited about a global telecom company with substantial growth that is I believe is significantly undervalued. The thesis is not as headline grabbing as a MSFT or AAPL but it is still well represented by the sell-side and a big position for several large funds. Does clearly articulating such

I have recently secured an interview at an IB Boutique, but even without that, if I am ever to work at a BB technical skill will be critical. As a person who knows little/nothing about the technical aspect of Investment Banking, where could one go to learn? I need a resource that begins with the very basics and then goes into greater detail. I have learned what I can from free resources online; as I am about to spend some cash to get the information I need, I'd like to know where my money would go farthest. I assume that for the sake of internship interviews a person doesn't need to know everything, so what are the most critical things? I thank you all for your time.

Hey everyone, This is my first post. Just got told I didn't receive an internship at the BB I interviewed at yesterday. I thought it had gone really well, but I guess not. Is it worth it to write a thank you letter asking for advice going into future interviews? Also, I read somewhere that if the interviewers ask where else you're applying it's a good sign, my interviewers asked and I was honest about having 2 upcoming consulting interviews, this was the only answer they wrote anything down for. Was this a mistake? And is this question really a good sign? Thanks!

Looks like Goldman Sachs is implementing a new recruiting system. Instead of coming to schools to do on-campus interviews, Goldman will be doing the interviews online. Goldman says this is a way to minimize bias in the hiring process. I personally don't like this move. Goldman may say it's about reducing bias, but I see the main reason as cost cutting. Even coming from a non-target, I feel like this takes away some school pride. I think that there is some good with on-campus interviews. Being relatively early in the recruiting process, you can weed out the socially awkward kids. Not only that

I got turned down for another job today even though I thought the interview went very well. Now I have had bad interviews and know that feeling afterwards knowing you fucked up, however, recently I keep getting turned down even though I felt this interview went very well. These interviews have not been technical for the most part so thats not an issue. This past interview I prepared for so long that I knew everything I could possibly find on the company. I thought it went very well and the only bad thing I could think of was when I got asked, "why real estate" and I responded with how it was a

I had a 1st phone screening interview and it went really well. The interviewer even told me he was going to recommend me for the position to the decision maker as I showed I was really passionate about the opportunity and the company, and told me I would be contacted within a week or so. Today it's been exactly a week and haven't heard anything yet. If he liked me that much, should not have I been contacted yet? How much longer should I wait until I send them an email following up on my status? I sent a thank you email a day after the interview already. \ Thank you!

Hey Guys, Wanted to get some advice as an Analyst at a Asset Manager ($1-5B AUM) trying to break into PE. I started applying this weekend and just got a call for a first round interview. However, I am a little worried because I have very little experience with real world valuation/modeling as my previous role was more research and analytical based (Our strategies were all run by algos). I have done a decent amount of prep and feel comfortable answering basic DCF, WACC questions but I don't want my lack of work on deals to hinder me too much. I was wondering if anyone else has run into this or

My girlfriend has just received an interview for the PIPG equity derivatives team of Goldman Sachs in London, after working slightly more than a year at the Interest Rate Derivatives desk for one of the larger Nordic banks. Is anyone familiar with this desk? What can she expect in terms of the interview process , desk, comp. etc? Any suggestions as to what she should focus on given her background in interest rates (with limited exposure to equity derivatives) and somewhat limited prep time (1 week)? Anything is appreciated!

I havent picked up a book like 'Barbarians at the Gate' and read it for myself due to time constraints(doing the CFA program right now) and now I am wondering what would be the best way to respond to this if this comes up in an interview. I have read Rosenbaum's book but I was wondering how would the interviewer respond to me not having read any of the great wall street books. Also note that I have virtually no time to do anything right now-fully booked so I cant read a whole book quickly. I can Perhaps skim through the book? What do you guys think.

Counseled out after almost two years at a top consulting firm (post-mba position). I am having a couple of interviews with other consulting firms (of similar prestige level). How do I explain that I want to join them? 1) If I tell them about being counseled out, what is the best way of doing it with minimal damage to my chances of getting an offer? 2) If I don't tell them about being counseled out, what are the most plausible reasons for wanting to change the employer? There are always people who change firms for various reasons, including after being kicked out by their former employers, so I

Last week, I went for an interview with Rothschild Global Advisory for a long-term internship in Brussels, where I got interviewed by 5 different people who were all either analysts or assistant directors. The MD was out of town so I did not get interviewed by him. The interview consisted of both technical (walking them through different models) and personal fit questions. Yesterday I got a call saying that the MD would like to invite me over for a personal interview with him. Is this to give the final go-ahead and offer me the job or should I see it as a 2nd round interview with more emphasis

Hi all, So last week I sent an informational interview request to the head of a coverage group at a BB for an informational interview and he actually got back to me and I have a call scheduled with him next week. The main question I was wondering is if I should ask the question "is there anyone else who can speak to me from your team" that I usually ask analysts and associates at the end of those informational interviews. Since this person is someone high up, I think they may get offended if I ask that question? It's like "why do you need to talk to anyone else when you just talked the head of

Background: senior at a target school, econ major I was recently invited to a 30-minute phone interview with D.E. Shaw for the Finance Associate position. I was told to have pen and paper ready... What should I expect? I don't think they would make me do arithmetic problems over the phone since I can always resort to a calculator. Pen & paper is kind of intimidating. Also, what should I expect for later rounds, besides a stock pitch? Thanks!
