I just received an offer from an upper MM PE shop in NYC for a summer 2020 start. The worst part of the situation is that I was fired from my current bank (with 1 month given for the transition). Given I'm technically still employed at the firm, I didn't volunteer this information while going through recruiting as it would have precluded me from potential opportunities. I definitely want to take the offer, but would have a 3-4 month gap before the official start date - has anyone run into a similar situation prior to starting their PE gig or have any advice to share??? Really don't wanna blow

Hello fellow monkeys! I have just gotten a full time offer as analyst 1 in the BAML M&A team in London. My long term objective is Long/Short Equity, although to get there if it is really necessary I would be willing to do PE first (been told going to HFs from PE is a lot easier than going there from banking). How is BAML in general and the M&A team in particular positioned for exit opps into L/S Equity? How about exits into mega funds PEs and well reputed middle market PEs? Let's be conservative and assume I will be an analyst ranked mediocrely or average - How are the opportunities? Do I need

I recently received a FT return for a lower tier BB in NY. I enjoyed my summer experience, but I'm concerned I won't have the exit opps I'm interested in coming out of my analyst rotation. They've given me 2 weeks to accept; I have two first-round FT interviews lined up with Tier 1 BBs (and likely 1-2 more BBs or EBs) but both of them so far have said they wouldn't be able to get me a definitive answer before my deadline with the bank I summered at. So, I pose the question to WSO... how would you guys go about this? I'm against reneging, so I believe it will come down to taking my current

I have a wealth management internship offer pending, I am more interested in Investment Banking and I am still waiting on a couple of companies to get back to me for an IB internship. All these companies are in different states and some are in different countries. The Wealth management offer is expiring soon and I do not know what to do. Can I sign the offer and rescind it if I was given one of the IB offers? Is there a "blacklist" that I would be placed on if I did accept and then rescind? This will be my final internship so I need to get the best position.

Hi guys I'm really conflicted and need some outside perspective I've gotten an offer from deloitte (A) that is a 10% cut from where I am now. I have an offer from another company in industry (B) that is 20% more than where I am now. The pay difference between deloitte and this other company is 3,250 per month or 39,000 per year. The primary reason I was looking to leave my current company was to get a big brand name on my resume - I'm not planning to get an MBA so I figured deloitte would do. With the serious pay differential, though, I might as well go get an MBA with the extra money I make

Hey guys - was recently introduced to WSO and could use some advice. I just went through the recruiting process with GS IMD and received an offer in Fixed Income for next year's summer analyst program. I am excited for the opportunity although I am concerned about accepting an offer without knowing more about the position. I start an internship with Fidelity in a few weeks, in FI research. Due to the timing of the recruiting season, I will need to accept the GS offer within my first week of work at Fidelity. In the past, Fidelity interns have been able to switch to equity and follow the

Hey Monkeys, I'm a long time lurker and a first time poster on WSO. Please note that this post will revolve around my journey to investment banking. This sort of story has become much more typical, but I still think it has enough merit to be shared. Please bear with the entirety of this post, I promise there is a point to it all.

I will be accepting my retail banking summer analyst offer in our regional office in wichita, ks! looking forward to my first paycheck. woohoo!

Greetings all, I'll cut right to the chase. I am a complete non-target graduating soon who just landed an IB analyst offer at a decent but up-and-coming MM bank on the west coast with decent comp (60 base 20-30 bonus), in an industry group I absolutely love. The offer explodes at the end of Friday. I just had 3 2nd round rounds at other, bigger banks (one is in PubFin, one is IB for a TMT-centric boutique, one is a MM/boutique for a healthcare IB analyst position). I would rather take the boutique (if offered) since it higher comp, in a more desirable area. I contacted the banks involved informing them I have the offer, and they all said they're pushing me through to the next rounds but can't make any offers just yet. My questions are:

Is this a douche move? Both shops are good. For comparison's sake (I'll change the jobs a bit so as not to be obvious in terms of my identity): One is Global Capital Markets at an established BB (initially my first choice) and the other is Advisory/M&A at a boutiqe bank which has been doing very well for the past 2 years. Now the dilemna is that the BB took a long time to finalize their decision (didnt say yes or no) and I panicked and once I got the advisory gig I was only given over a week or so and in the end I had no choice but to accept it or let it go (they were fairly clear about it.)

I got the offer with my transcript that looked good without the last semester when the hiring was conducted. But I am having a huge trouble with one 1-credit technical class and it's not required so it won't affect graduation. I think I am gonna fail that one as the duration of the course is only 1/3 of the semester and I can barely save it with only days remaining. The firm only mentioned they wanted a GPA higher than 3.5 (I will try to make it as the F is just 1 credit). Will they take back my offer and should I start looking for other jobs?

I've sadly been put on a waitlist/hold-list at a BB after attending one of their first final rounds this year. I was told to wait until end of this month when they've held a few more final rounds (I know someone who has received an offer and someone who got rejected) I've been interviewing with small companies in the meantime and received a full-time offer which is going to expire very soon. It's not very related to what I want to do, but I am wondering if I can leverage this offer to get off the waitlist at the BB.

Hi all, I interviewed with a big tech firm a few weeks ago about a summer gig, i did well on the phone interview, so they brought me in a few weeks later and I interviewed with the product engineer and his boss. pretty much wrecked the interview, and they offered me the position on the spot, which i accepted. fast forward to today, and i get an email from a HR guy who said that due to budget issues, they can't bring me on. i guess my question is, what should i say back? i really want to work there, and would like an offer post grad (i'm a junior), but i want to say something along the lines of

Tier 2 MC Firm: Friday, May 3rd I was given a verbal offer by the partner. Received paperwork by 3pm, I noticed the offer expires on Monday May 6th, overall I understand this as the start-date is May 13th, however I will be moving-out of state for this. There is no way I can break my lease, move my car, move my belongings, and not have it exceed the sign-on bonus. I emailed the recruiter at 3:30pm, with my concerns. She did not reply. So I should hear back on Monday (aka the day I have to give a decision). 1. What are ways to negotiate other than saying (I need re-lo) *I've thought about

I recently negotiated an offer and wanted to post about my positive experience. This is the first time I have negotiated an offer and in preparation I looked through the previous posts and asked for a bit of advice from SirTradesaLot for help in the process. Negotiating an offer is like a dance, both partners need to know how to tango in order for both parties to leave feeling satisfied. More than likely, the potential employer (HR, future boss, Hiring manager) will have a greater amount of experience negotiating offers. So ensuring you are caught up on the steps is important. For those of you

Hey guys, anyone have any advice on which is the best offer to take for an entry level position? One is a boutique firm (not yet well known) with whom I have an amazing cultural fit, with very interesting strategy work but is limited in its sectors--with my preferred sectors not generally represented. It's in London which some may say is world-leading for business opportunities, but after having lived there in the past it's ultimately not a city I'd like to live in long term. The hours seem quite good for consulting with infrequent traveling, at least from what they say (50-55/wk). The other

I am usually very brief in my posts here on wso but I am in need of some serious help ASAP and I hope you are all up for a good bit of reading. Before I get started, I understand that nobody can give me definitive answers and that I will ultimately have to make this decision on my own but I feel that having multiple points of view from people who have been where I am will really help. Basically, I have 2 offers that I am seriously considering for a summer internship and they cannot be more different from each other. So, first allow me to give a quick rundown of these differences and my overall take on them.

Hey guys, Just wanted to get some thoughts on a predicament. I've just moved back to Asia and have 3 options that I am considering. (1) A start-up advisory boutique started by some ex-Goldman/McKinsey guys. These guys started about 8 months ago. (2) Network Planning at a national airline. Government owned, so career trajectory looks to be quite slow. Same for salary progression. But brand name strongest out of the 3 options. (3) Off-shore arm of a US consulting firm. Work is for US clients, so am a bit worried about taking the back-seat to my opposite number in the US. Also, client interaction is gonna be minimal as local work is not really taken onboard. Salary for (1) and (3) are in the same range.

Fortunate enough to have two great offers on the table albeit slightly different parts of real estate. Currently a 2nd yr analyst at a balance sheet lender in NYC. 1. Associate - Canadian Bank - CMBS Originations - $110k base - Up to 50% bonus 2. Analyst - Large Real Estate Private Equity Firm - Acquisitions Analyst - $90k base - 50% - 100% bonus Its hard leaving money on the table but I think REPE would open up more doors in the long run and also won't pigeon hole me in originations. Plus I like the culture at the REPE more than the Bank. Any input would be much appreciated

I'm currently a Econ senior at a non-HYPS undergrad (Duke, U Chicago, Cornell) deciding between returning full-time to a Tier 2 consulting firm focused on PE due diligence (LEK, Strategy&, Parthenon) or accepting an analyst offer at a MM PE firm (500-800MM AUM). Both offers are for NYC. If I were to stay at the consulting firm, I intend to transition to PE after two years. Buy-side exits to PE here are not as great as MBB have it, but not impossible for MM firms. The MM PE firm is a smaller team, but is reputable and has a strong path from analyst --> associate after 2 years. Most of the

Hello everyone. I am seeking some advice in regards my next career move. Any thought or suggestion would be extremely helpful. Situation: New Analytics Consultant Weighing Career Options I currently work at Deloitte as an Analytics Consultant (for about 6 months) in the Advisory (NOT CONSULTING) practice. I recently received an offer to join Accenture for their Consulting Analyst program. It is like a rotational program where I can also look into different industries

Hi folks, I would like to ask you for your opinions on the situation that I am currently experiencing. Unfortunately, my undergrad degree is rather poor (state uni in US) so I had applied for a couple of masters programs in finance at top unis in UK in order to maximize my chances to get an offer from IBD/PE in London (I am EU citizen) and I got in to Oxbridge for 2014 intake. However, a couple of months ago I have started an internship at a mid-cap PE fund (less known) in London. Recently, they gave me and offer assuming that I would give up on my masters degree at Oxbridge.

First time posting. Was recently offered a job with modest salary as a data analyst in New York. (The work is particular to pharmaceutical/healthcare marketing w big data). This is my only job offer (graduating senior from top25 school), but I have another interview. Could doing a job like this for 1 year (2 at most) be of use if I am considering a future in Finance/Equity? My concern is that I will become stuck in a very specific field and it will look bad if I leave after only one year, but a job is better than none, right?? (Other options are summer business program (Tuck) and try to find

This is a major problem for F500 companies where the finance department turnover is huge. How can you create loyalty so that the analysts you trained don't leave as soon as they have a better offer? Here are a few tactics commonly used, please share what works best at your firm! Money: your firm tries to buy you with raises and bonuses. It's the obvious thing to do but from my experience it doesn't work very well in the long term because if money is the only reason you get up in the morning you're a mercenary not a loyal employee. Expensive gala diners, 1st class travel: This one is a bit old

Hi! Currently I'm in an summer internship in trading at a BB and right after I will start an off-cycle internship with another BB in IBD. My question is, if I get an offer after the summer internship and I sign it can I later on reject it if I like the other job more (and I get an offer for that one as well)? Thanks!

With seemingly so much uncertainty as to where the market is going, one day the next bull market is starting while the next day people make it sound like '08 all over again, what do you guys think about joining a top BB S&T program this summer as a Summer Analyst in terms of FT offers? I understand this is desk specific, and the whole "control what you can control" attitude, but what do you think the outlook is? On one side, assuming markets are poor, there could be more hiring of junior folk who are cheaper to keep, while on the other hand there could simply be less hiring altogether. Curious

Hello WSO folks. What do you think of these 2 offers? UNDERGRADUATE Salary: Nearly Identical, OW is higher by 2K Signing Bonus: Identical Benefits: DC looks better from first glance. They start matching 401K after 60 days where OW matches after a year. Nearly identical amounts of PTO. Performance Bonus: DC has none for the first year...(WHAT?) at the end of 2nd year, you get a big raise and bonus. OW offers performance bonus up to 15%. Both firms have great people. Had great feelings interacting with both groups. The offers are in the same city. big hub for Consumer Goods/ Technology / Telecommunications / Retail for both companies. Big city for outsourcing as well(not many local projects = more likely to travel). Seems like OW has more international projects.

I have entry-level FT offers from both Deloitte S&O and The Parthenon Group. For Parthenon, I like their culture and the fact that they travel less than other consulting firms, but I'm not sure about the effect of their merger with EY. For Deloitte S&O, I'm attracted to their rotational program and broad international network since I'm very interested in international opportunities. I'm considering B-school after 2-3 years of working. What would you recommend in terms of: 1) B-school placement/sponsorship 2) Office culture 3) Work-life balance 4) Type of work: strategy vs. implementation 5) Exit opportunities

Thanks for the replies to my last couple of threads. Now, in all seriousness, I got a call from a firm who offered me a summer position. No documents signed yet, but when the HR asked if I'd accept the offer, I said currently I would love to. To be honest, I'm still waiting for another firm to get back to me. Is an oral acceptance legally binding? I don't want to get screwed. I mean I haven't gone through the formalities and haven't even seen the terms and conditions regarding this position. Anyone?

Long Story Short- I was suspended for one semester and I will be returning in the spring. The suspension was disciplinary and due to political factors I was made an example to set a precedent in the future. I go to a top 10 school and have excellent work experience at BBs. I just crushed my most recent superday and received an SA offer immediately but the suspension situation never came up. How should I go about letting them know the situation? Should I talk to HR or the people who interviewed me? Many of my interviewers for the superday have reached out to me personally to congradulate me

Say for example you were choosing between two offers: JPM vs. Citi. If during the super day and recruiting process a VP or MD at Citi really connected well and wanted you to join the firm and their group would it be more worthwhile to take the "less prestigious" firm over the more prestigious one if it means working with someone who requests and remembers you? Or, does it not matter as a summer which MD you work for and you are just another number at the end of the day?
13 Feb 2011
In a horrible situation. MM IBD offer explodes Tuesday night. On Friday, I'm supposed to have 2 BB Super Days (one top tier, one second tier). No possibility of extension from the MM. I have a return offer from a HF that I was at last summer, but its a pretty small shop, and I'm not really looking to go back there. I don't know what I'd do if I turned down the MM and didn't get the BB's, but I'm not a huge fan of the MM. No clue what to do.... What would you guys do?

hey guys! so in a friend's offer letter, it says the offer is conditioned upon the completion of a satisfactory reference check. she did not receive a FT offer from her SA stint, and she mentioned that in her interviews, but could the people from her SA stint screw her over? she doesn't want to accept the offer and then get screwed, so she wants to know if she should keep recruiting. the offer explodes in the next couple of days. thanks guys!

Hey guys, I have been offered a position as a trading assistant and I am really excited about it. Its a small growing firm, however I have one question. In the offer letter there is no mention of vacation time. I don't know if they just forgot to put it in there or if I don't get time off. I don't know if I should ask about it because I don't want it to seem like I am already thinking about taking time off. I know I won't be taking a lot of time off as it is, but just curious. What do you all think I should do? thanks

Hi Everyone, I interviewed with an F500 and got an offer as a Corporate Development Transaction Analyst- apparently the work involves pricing and shaping engagements, joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions, etc. I'm coming from B4 Audit and was originally looking to get into IB with a long term goal of VC and business school along the way. I took this interview because I wanted to learn more about the work and it seems interesting and that I would pick up a useful skillset. I don't have any banking offers, but now that summer is here I can ramp up the time I put into networking and getting a

I got offers from both Barclays and BlackRock this summer as intern. I will be analyst in financial modeling group at BlackRock and tech analyst in Barclays. I couldn't make a decision for these two. For paying, Barclays has a higher monthly salary that is $6k, and housing conpensation. BlackRock has hourly salary at 33.75 which is quite low, but the overload hours pay is 50 so if I work a lot I can make much more money. Which company is better?

Hey fellow monkeys, I'm sure we all understand the springboard that a BB job would provide for a career in Finance, however, HOW IMPORTANT exactly is the BB offer? What I'm saying is. Assuming the following scenarios. Offer at MM Bank vs Delaying graduation (for eg. Doing Honors Thesis, 6 Months Internships, MFin etc.) to try again for BB offers. What would be your decision? Advise needed. Cheers!

Hi guys, I just wanted to get an opinion from all of you. I received 2 job offers and am confused which one I should take: Job 1: corporate finance with an F500 company (CPG Industry). Large brand name. Job 2: Financial Analyst (basically FP&A) with a national bank (subsidiary of a big bank). End career goal: Work in the M&A side or work in a PE or HF. Also, please tell me why you think I should take job 1 or job 2. Thanks all! Much appreciated

Hello, I need help deciding which summer internship to get. I am looking to get into IB and I am a freshman at a non-target/regional target. -BB PWM local branch (Merill Lynch) -regional/MM IB boutique -MM PWM local branch (Raymond James) Is PWM at a bb better than a small IB boutique? Need help. I applied and was offered an MBB internship, but had a different gpa on my application online than I currently actually have (retaking classes and put my gpa as if finished with an A in the class, which I will have but won't be updated until the end of the semester) Will I be required to go through a background check, and will this hurt me? What should I do?

I had final interviews with 3x MD's last week on Wednesday and I still haven't had an offer, but I haven't heard that I have been rejected either. HR said this last Wednesday (one week later) that the team was discussing 'shortly'. Am I being flipped or is there a genuine chance that an offer might be incoming? Does anyone have any experience with this? The role is in institutional sales for a BB firm and it's an 'off-cycle' Associate hire (few applicants, not a formal programme).

Hey guys, Quick poll/question: I have an offer from a reputable tech firm for finance (I'm very interested in tech, so working for a tech firm is good in my opinion). However, the actual work & scope of what I would be doing is not interesting to me. The financial analysis is way off point from where I'd want to be down the line and the position really doesn't excite me. I really like the company and the pay is pretty good, so those are definite pro's for accepting, but I'm very much not sure. It's my only offer & has been my only interview so far, so I'm feeling pressed to take it. Obviously

Hello all, I was lucky enough to receive a full time offer to a consulting firm but the office location was for my second preference being Chicago. However, I would really love to be in New York, is there any way to negotiate a change of location when accepting the offer? I have a returning offer from the company that I interned in and that offer is for New York City. In addition, my family is relocating back to the East Coast from Chicago. Is there anyway that I can use that for leverage? EG: I will accept the second offer on the grounds that the office location is New York City rather than

One of my close buddies was fortunate enough to land an analyst offer at William Blair and also Bain Capital Ventures. I know WB is a great mm shop where he'd master execution and get set up for PE, and I know BCV does require a lot of sourcing with some execution work in the second year, but in terms of name/prestige I'd go with the latter. Any recommendations for my buddy? He asked for my input and I had no idea what to say to him. Much appreciated!

Hi, I was emailed by the HR of a bank and asked if I was still interested in a place for their bursary/placement programme? I replied and said that I was. The lady emailed me the next day, and said that she is glad to hear that and one of her associates will be "in touch with me to take me through the process"? Its been a week now. I know its kind of soon, but what should I do? Respond with an email? Phone her? Or just wait? I dont want to ruin my chances by doing something stupid! Thanks for your help!

Hi guys, I have an offer in S&T from a BB but I am skeptical in taking it. Here's why: As I have just graduated, I believe that in this point of time I should be focussing on skills development/opening doors rather than salary, as this will come eventually with the former. I have an engineering degree and engineering offers too and know I can develop analytical, problem solving skills, soft skills etc but most importantly I will get to manage teams of 10+ within a year at these eng companies - You don't get this sort of exposure at banks The biggest thing i am concerned about with the S&T
