With the news of Jeff Bezos passing Bill Gates for richest person, I wanted to start a discussion about Amazon. Amazon is a stock I've always struggled with. I'm an older millenial, so my finance career didn't start in earnest until the financial crisis, so while I've had chances to invest in AMZN sub $200/share, I've never been able to bring myself to buy it because I've always looked at traditional valuation metrics. leaving aside for the moment that the company purposely does not have much in the way of net income, it still trades 3x in the industry average when you look at price to cash

Do you guys read hardcopies still or more on iPad/Kindle? Good article in the FT: [quote]Ten years ago, as Jeff Bezos launched the Kindle ereader in New York, he declared that "the book is so highly evolved and so suited to its task that it's very hard to displace". Amazon's founder was right: this spring, despite the digital upheaval unleashed by the Kindle, it will open a bookstore in Manhattan. There are signs of the book's renaissance all around. Waterstones, the UK book chain, returned to profit last year after suffering

Hi WSO! Since the Amazon/Whole Foods acquisition seems to be the "hot topic of the day", I figured I'd help pay back the community for all the guidance and advice I've received from this forum over the many years. I am one of the employees with direct insight into the Amazon / Whole Foods deal when the acquisition went down. I am relatively senior (store manager and a specific department head) at our location in Portland, and was amongst one of the first people to hear about the deal after it was announced. Our store is one of the larger and more "well respected" locations in the north-east

Hi WSO - I've worked in big tech (think FAMGA) since graduation ('17). Went to a top 10 US UG, currently working in product, was previously in corporate strategy (got to work on an acquisition in 2019). I would like to transition to the investment side for my next role; ideally in early stage VC, open to Growth Equity. Not super interested in Seed (not a good fit), or in Buyout (not a good fit; not a banker). If anyone has experience making this transition, or has peers who have, I'd love to hear any and all advice. I am just now starting the process. Some avenues I'm considering searching

Call me crazy, but the amount of disruption that Amazon has caused in global business leads me to believe that Bezos has now taken over the "innovator" throne with the passing of Steve Jobs. Amazon has announced its intentions to delivery packages via drone for customers that need something as fast as possible.

Amazon is a just retail/tech company, right? According to this article, it looks like finance is the next stop for Amazon:
BUT [quote]The effort is still in its early stages and may not come to fruition, the people said. The talks with financial firms are Amazon.com Inc. AMZN is in talks with big banks including JPMorgan Chase & Co. about building a checking-account-like product the e-commerce giant could offer its customers, according to people familiar with the matter.

Hi all, After 2 years as a consultant at S&O, I would now like to exit into tech I have a friend of mine that can refer me at AWS, and that advised me to apply to an Account Manager role in order to get a different business perspective, that could help me in my career evolution What do you think? What are the typical exits for strategy consultants in FAANG? Does account management sound to you as a bad idea, or even as a downgrade vs. strategy? Thanks!

Over the past month Amazon has opened 6 brick and mortar stores across the US. The stores are titled Amazon Books and seem to be a modern twist on the traditional book store. They are using these locations to push Amazon Prime and to promote the discoverability of new items, which their website cannot do as efficiently. Employees are claiming the irony of Amazon opening a bookstore when they are predominately known for driving book stores out of business * What do you guys think about Amazon going against the grain of their core business? Is this genius? or just plain stupid? Articles http:/

With the big news that Amazon is acquiring Whole Foods, this article regarding their latest patent is getting no love. The patent titled "Physical store online shopping control", is quite an interesting one that got approved. It general it;
It also can enable Amazon to send details a system that would prevent customers from comparing prices in Amazon stores by watching any online activity conducted over its wi-fi network, detecting any information of interest and responding by sending the shopper to a completely different web page - or even blocking internet use altogether.

It seems as if Amazon has its hands in every cookie jar, healthcare is only just one of those jars. Ever since Amazon acquired wholesale pharmacy licenses, the healthcare industry has been on high alert. One example of this is CVS (the drugstore giant) buying Aetna (one of the biggest health insurers) for $69 billion

Hi, I'm going to be starting a job as an entry level Financial analyst at Amazon pretty soon and I was just wondering what exactly this job would entail, in terms of day to day duties/projects/skills need? I have had zero experience working in corporate finance before this, so any advice would be helpful. If it helps I think I might be put into a product finance team (i.e. Amazon Fire, Kindle, etc.) Any insights on Amazon in general or exit opps would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!

All too often lately, it seems, I am behind on replying to private messages. Though it is my sincerest intention to follow up on each item in my backlog, there is one question I receive more than all others: Which newspapers, blogs, periodicals, books, editorialists, academics, etc. do you follow? As such, opportunism beckons. To the end of clearing a fair portion of my PM inventory, I have decided to initiate a semi-regular, curated linkwrap of writing on which I've been musing. Just how regular these posts will be, I cannot say. But I will do my very best to offer content that is

Drones are not just for military use anymore. They're available to everyone, and have provided views and vistas we've never seen before. The best thing about them: mobility. They can just get anywhere. Military, spying, creating amazing footage, agriculture, construction, delivery, surveillance – you name it, drones are there. The hottest application right now is delivery. We all know about Amazon and other internet giants, but did you know that Swiss Post is also officially testing drone deliveries? Leading countries such as US and UK might be at disadvantage here due to their complex legal

I know everyone praises the Capital One Finance Rotation Program as a great career starter and an opportunity that can lead to other options such as consulting or a top MBA. There also seems to be many more finance related rotations in the program. However, the Amazon Finance Rotation Program is tech related and is also a company that I find more interesting. But the rotations seem more accounting focused and there is not much talk about this program regarding the exit opportunities and the MBA prospects. As someone who is interested in tech and Amazon's products, that program seems more

You know you're at the top of your game as a corporation when you can offer your employees thousands of dollars to quit and you still have a workforce a week later. But that's just what Amazon is doing: they're offering warehouse employees up to $5,000 just to walk out the door - not because the company is downsizing, but because they want to make sure that everyone who works there actually wants to work there. It's a pretty ballsy approach to human resources, but it must go a long way to dealing with employee complaints. So this got me wondering: how much would your firm have to pay you to

It looks like the free ride might be coming to an end. President Obama enthusiastically endorsed legislation that would introduce an Internet sales tax, perhaps even by year end. Obviously the bill has massive support from brick-and-mortar retailers who claim online retailers have a huge pricing advantage over them. It might surprise you to learn, however, that Wall Street is lining up against the bill. I want to run an idea past you guys to see what you think. We've seen some pretty flabbergasting moves so far this earnings season, especially on Friday with GOOG (disclosure: I'm long) closing up $122 a share and CMG (which I don't own, sadly) closing up $70 a share. So I'm looking around thinking to myself that somebody is due to take a fall, and I'm wondering if that somebody isn't Amazon. The stock's been on a tear lately (I sold out at $305, dammit) and the company releases their earnings at the close on Thursday. I have to believe that a miss would mean a pretty significant drop in the

I recently began entertaining the idea of moving out of consulting, and ran across the Brand Specialist role at Amazon. I've been at a non-MBB firm for the past two years, and with the limited scope of work that we perform, felt like I was beginning to become "pingeoholed" I was wondering if anyone was familiar with the role at Amazon, or had any insights on working at Amazon in general, preferably outside of a technical / engineering role.

Tech analysts have pontificated on the possibility of a Facebook phone for years and it seems that their wildest wet dreams (or nightmares) may finally be coming true. The New York Times reported that Facebook has been hiring former Apple engineers who worked on the iPhone and iPad to help build a Facebook phone. However, it remains to be seen if a software company can ultimately succeed in the hardware business. After all, Microsoft and Google have made several efforts with mixed successes into hardware and of course Apple comes from the hardware world. And sure, Facebook's social network is

Jeff Bezos is redirecting Amazon to head back into the healthcare sector, as a distributor for prescription-drugs. This, however, poses a plethora of obstacles such as licensing, third parties (health insurers), and so on.
Amazon's success in this sector comes down to a middleman. With Amazon being so dependent on Many health-care industry officials and advisers believe Amazon, if it opted to enter the market, would probably seek to join with or buy a company with systems already in place for processing prescriptions and then integrate those systems into its online shopping.

By definition, U.S. antitrust law exists to promote competition under the thought that competition benefits consumers. As much as lower prices do benefit consumers, at what point does it start to have a negative effect on the economy? First off, right now no one can raise prices with Bezos committed to shit margins to crush competitors that can't match due to higher cost structures and their desire to....actually make money. As Amazon continues to expand into other segments of the economy, like groceries, and continues to put competitors out of business, are the deflationary effects of its

The tablet wars are definitely heating up. With Amazon announcing the introduction of the new Kindle Fire priced at only $199, it appears they're going for the iPad jugular. Now JP Morgan is reporting that Apple has cut supply-side iPad orders by 25% for the 4th quarter. Apple still expects to sell as many as 12 million iPads this year, but the tablet space is starting to get crowded. I still haven't bought a tablet, but I'm thinking about shelling out $200 for the discontinued 32gb HP Touchpad. Then again, I'm such an Amazon fanboi that I'll probably have a new Fire before Christmas. Or I

Read here about Amazons new plan and strategy to becoming a ticket vendor. Amazon is planning to partner up with US venue owners to begin selling sporting event and concert tickets. This will hopefully play to end Ticketmaster's monopoly over the indsutry. We all hate the ticketmaster fees, so personally I think this would benefit the general public greatly. Amazon hopes that selling sport tickets will boost sales for sports merchandise. * Will Amazon be able to break the strong relationship between Ticketmaster

I feel completely dumbfounded and want to know why. Apple has a record breaking quarter and their stock prices takes it up the ass. Now, after market closed today, Amazon reported their earnings and they MISSED every single mark set by analysts. Amazon's EPS was .07 below analysts, and Amazon's revenue from Q4 was 21.27B vs 22.3B from analysts.(Q4) According to MarketWatch, their stock price is up $25.91 from its closing price during After Hours trading. Technology went to Washington this week with the purchase of the Washington Post by Jeff Bezos for $250 million. Why did Jeff Bezos buy the Washington Post? has been a widely pervasive question in social media this week and I thought to bring the discussion to WSO today. So here's my first question: Why do you think Jeff Bezos bought the Washington Post? 1. Is there a political agenda to it? - Political clout, protecting Amazon's interests in Washington.. Did he buy power for a pittance in Washington as this piece suggests? 2. Or do you consider it a smart business move by an entrepreneur who
