Hello, I go to a top 15 business school and am recruiting for IBD at a BB via an off campus process. It's not a structured process but I had met with 2 MD's and an associate. This was considered my final round. When I left, the alumni told me that I should hear back by early next week. I've heard in the past people got offers on the spot but is it bad not hearing within 24 hours?

Seems as though HSBC is a ghosttown on this forum since I have yet to see a thread about them in months. Are they really that bad or is it because they are an internationally focused bank?

Lately I've been using WSJ, Dealbook, Dealbreaker, and Yahoo finance. Anywhere else you guys think is a good resource?

I've noticed that many BBs have winter analyst jobs that are posted from time to time. Do you have to go to a regional school that is within a reasonable distance? When Is recruiting season for this?

Was wondering if anyone could add any insight on how to do this without burning any bridges. Examples Moving from SA at BB in NYC to FT in Chicago Moving from analyst in LA at CS to associate in NYC. etc.

I'm a freshman and I went to a BB diversity event and got business cards and wrote down names of all the employees who spoke at the panels. I'll be completely honest and say that I don't really know shit about financial modeling. I've taken accounting and macro and micro econ but I am completely foreign to LBO, DCF, etc. I know for a fact that the banks will begin taking my resume for their sophomore summer analyst openings. We get to choose up to 3 industries. I know for the time being I need to work on my technicals and reach out to people I was in contact with. Honestly, I don't really care

Quick background summary: First post, but have been using this website for >2 years. Student from a top target who pursued another career and then lateraled from a boutique to IBD at a top BB (GS/MS). I definitely know how hard it is to break in.

Long story short I have recently been accepted to a good diversity program to get in IB (think SEO, ML4T, inroads etc.) and have also attended a BB Diversity event. Would it be a good idea to include these things on my resume? I don't want to make it seem like I worked at a BB because obviously that wouldn't be true.

Hi all the amazing monkies. I am a HS senior and very settled to pursue a career within the IB industry, specifically FO because I had some exposure to M&A. (I decided to follow this path after very serious consideration. My family has some network within the financial services industry in Asia, and I was exposed to this at a young age.) Though still have a long way to go in order to excel in this field, I am very determined to presevere, and I also think my personality is a great fit for this industry.

I read through some of the forums regarding buying a new laptop, but a lot of new technology has come into play since then, thus the comments I've seen so far need a little updating. I was hoping I could get some more fresh advice. I currently have one of the first versions of the 11" MacBook Air, and it blows. There is no chance of running parallels on this in order to get the windows functionality, and I have been constantly carrying around an external hard drive because of the limited space.

Do I have any chance to break into IBD? I have sent my resume out a lot, but still no luck. I don't know what I do wrong here. Thank you so much in advance! http://www.razume.com/documents/27127

Which internship would be the most useful in landing a BB IBD SA position the summer before my senior year? I'm currently a rising sophomore and trying to land either a 15hr/wk internship for my fall semester at a boutique IB or in Big 4 Advisory, and would try to stay there during my winter break of a month. If I were to land a big 4 advisory position during this fall semester, would it be better to have an internship there for the upcoming summer as well or aim for a boutique IB? Any and all advice is welcome and thanks in advance P.S. I don't have any of offers yet, just trying to get a better idea of which path to aim for.

Completed a summer internship in 2011 and received an offer of employment. Contract for joining (BB in IBD) for full-time states august as starting date. However, if unable to graduate in time, are banks open to postponing the starting date to January? I know some interns from my class started in January 2012. However, I very much doubt it would be possible for someone set to start full-time in August 2012 to postpone the starting date to January 2013 (when having completed the internship in 2011). Nevertheless, thought I'd pose the question: What do you do when you know beforehand you won't be able to graduate in time for when your full-time employment starts? Is there any way in which to negotiate your way out of this? Do you miss out on your offer of employment due to this?

Hi everybody, have been reading on this forum for quite some time, great input! Just one short question regarding quitting IBD and starting that new PE job. I am currently working for one of the better BBs (GS/MS/JPM) in my 2nd year in IBD. I have already secured a MM PE offer for 2012 (starting date not fixed so far) Since we will receive our bonus end of January/February, I was wondering whether it is generally common for 2nd years to quit when bonuses have hit the bank account or stay for another 6 months From last year, I remember some analysts leaving in January, but the majority staying until their contract ended in July/August. Dont get me wrong, I think that IBD stint was a great learning experience but at this point I just want to get out as soon as possible.

Hi guys, I currently have a big dilemma. I am currently studying at UC Berkeley and I want to major in economics, not business. However, it seems to me that everybody thinks only Haas is a target (at least for IBD), and my chances coming from econ are slim. But on the other hand I would much rather work in S&T for which Berkeley is not a target anyway. Would it still be a bad idea to study economics instead of going to Haas (I really want to study econ)? Also, would it be a good idea to double in applied math? Thanks.

I'm graduating in 2014 and have an offer for Tax at Big 4 in the UK this summer. How hard would it be to get an IBD SA position for next summer? I've heard Tax gets pigeon-holed pretty bad. I'm just wondering if I should push for a consulting internship this summer at a smaller firm instead? Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Hi yall, I'm half way through my summer internship at a top US BB bank think (JPM, MS, GS). So far i have hated my experience and have no intention of accepting an offer if i get one. I probably wont be offered a place at this rate anyway. During my interview process i got an offer from a boutique think (Greenhill, Moelis, Evercore) but i turned it down in favour of the BB. I parted with the people at the smaller firm and i want to know what the best way of approaching them would be in order to get another summer role or full time position for next year. I have roughly 4 weeks left in my bb internship. Advice much appreciated. RZA

Hey All, I've read a lot of topics here and I know some of you guys are way more knowledgeable than I am when it comes to IBD vs AM and specific firms. I've got a specific question I hope you guys could help me out with. What are your thoughts on compensation/exit opps/the street's view/etc. on these guys? I'm thinking of going HF or PE or maybe going an entrepreneurial route but would prefer taking one of these jobs first. IBD: Jefferies (Seems to get bashed alot...whats the deal w/ these guys?) Nomura (What is Wall St.'s sentiment towards these guys right now? How are they performing, etc.?) AM: T Rowe Price (Prestigious? Kind of in B-more...not the most idealistic place to be)

2nd year BO/ MO/quasi FO rotational analyst moving to IBD: Should I ask for 2nd year analyst status?
Hi-- I'm an analyst soon to graduate from a BO/ MO/quasi FO rotational program from a top BB that emphasizes experience cross-LOB (IB, AM, etc). I've worked hard, impressed my teams, and chosen my rotations strategically in such a way that when I realized I wanted to move to FO 6 months ago, I did it pretty easily having been given an offer to join this BB's IBD program, which I'm extremely excited about. It seems I've been selected because of my experience in the IB prior on desks with product knowledge closely related to what I'd need to have for this role, as well as having more experience with deck compilations and working with clients than the other candidates.

not the biggest fan of new york (personal preference), so would love to know fellow monkeys' thoughts on the pro's and con's of each of these cities for banking (besides the obvious tech and healthcare for sf, industrials for chicago)

Just need some advice from you guys. If given the opportunity to work at Moelis M&A or BAML Tech M&A, what do you think is the better opportunity? I know Moelis is the new kid on the block and everyone is super excited about them, but BAML is a BB and I guess the analyst would get exposure to larger deals and more variety. Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If I took a startup accelerator instead of an investment banking internship for the summer, would I be screwing myself for full-time ib recruiting if the venture implodes? I have past corp. fin/strategy and investment banking internships already, but this startup accelerator seems almost once in a lifetime opportunity. But I also have a lot of student debt, so if this venture doesn't pick up I'd rather do full-time corporate recruiting. Advice much appreciated. I'm losing sleep over this decision and I could really use some additional input. Best, BankingWaffle

Which would everybody take in this market if given the choice?

Hello Monkeys, I have finally made up my mind, and Investment Banking is definitely the way I want to go! So my question is, what can I do to better equip me to be the best in the business; not best things to do to get me in the industry, but those would be helpful too.

Hi WSO, I'm currently a junior at a top target school (3.7 GPA double major econ/cs), and I've really struggled this season to get anything good for my summer internship. I've had few finance interviews (maybe like 3-4 all through connections), and the rest have been BO tech. I attribute this to my lack of networking and general misunderstanding of the industry coming into this season (especially with no finance experience and a lot of tech experience). I really want to try to position myself for coming FT interviews as best as I can and salvage what I have. Currently I have prospects at: Finance: A corporate finance Position at a F500 (top 250) clothing retail company Tech: Nomura Fixed Income BAML Global Markets BlackRock Aladdin + Technology ...a few more small places

Wondering what the pros and cons are of a sophomore summer at Morgan Stanley in either IBD or Financial Engineering? I'm interested more in IBD but I'm a fan of the quant and product structuring work FE does. Does anyone know what the hours and lifestyle would be like in FE compared to IBD? Assuming for IBD a top group, i.e. M&A, Tech, etc.

Groups in a bank that help companies raise equity, debt and hybrids. I understand that ECM/DCM come at a later stage where they play more of a "sales" role (marketing the new offering to funds / organising road shows etc / book building etc) while there's a group in banks that help in modelling / advising on what kind of capital to issue. Is there a particular name of this kind of group? Thanks!

Just read Liars Poker... I want to know why bond traders-especially mortgage traders-were the most profitable groups for the banks back then. I also noticed that Lewis makes fun of corporate finance people. However, according to everything I've read on this website, corp. finance is better on your resume than S&T. Does top IB talent aim to be part of the most profitable group, whichever it may be at the time? -confusedprospectivemonkey

There have been a lot of recent threads of people leaving the industry and shinning a negative light on the whole experience. They all seem to be honest from the heart post from people who truly wanted to be in banking. This has made me very curious as I will find out very soon if I landed a FO role for a BB here in Houston. I came from the cellar of banking so I am excited to have made it this far. I have no internships and come from a bad non-target.

I'm now doing Ops SA with a BB. The bank is in a hiring spree to build their support headcount. So BO interns would have a big chance to secure a FT offer. But my heart lies in FO - IBD as my ideal target. Had several chances to interview with other BBs for IBD SAs, but all failed. May be lack of preparation. My last push is I've secured a 6mth boutique IB internship (small but covers a relatively new industry sector). adding to my previous experience as an econ research for mid-market global markets, I feel that I may have a good chance to impress other BB recruiters.

First time poster here. If in an internship interview, you are asked 'why are you interested in this division?", are they referring to IBD, or specifically M&A if no division was specified in the application?

The middle market IB group I signed with earlier this year continually cited how they do deals with JPM, GS, etc. all the time and that their analysts beat out some BB kids in PE recruitment. After hearing this information was very excited and ended up taking the position, but now I am not sure if I was just drinking their kool-aid. Is this normal/possible?

Any thoughts on CS's GLobal Industrial Services group? Is this a top group? Would an analyst in this group learn a lot? What will the exit opps for PE be like? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, I looked but cant find the email format for Berkery Noyes. Anyone that can help? Also in terms of prestige how does this rank compare to places like Rodman and Renshaw? Lastly is true that at a senior level compensation at these places can be similar to BB. Thanks for the help

so being a 4th year, i had been networking a fair bit for the past semester and got a decent stint at a BB for FT (under their investment management)...i honestly wanted IBD but in this environment, this seemed like my best bet and so i took it up...the thing is that i have not yet informed my network which is spread in different BBs that i have accepted something since I don't want them to think that i was not as keen on their firm as i showed it to be...what would u recommend? do i not mention about this opportunity or should i share with them? very confused....

For all of you that are working/have worked at a PE fund in the US, as well as having done IB previously, and required a working Visa: Say you did year one in IB on your OPT and then when you applied for the H1B you got rejected, what did you end up doing? I've heard of some people who spend 6 months in another office offshore and are brought back using a L Visa, but this can't be transferred to a different employer like the H1B can. If your H1B application gets rejected, how does that affect your buy-side recruiting? Thank you in advance for all the help!

Curious: Given the 70% bonus cuts across the board and the shrinking market, are bulge brackets worth it? Do bulge bracket bankers still hold the "damn it feels good to be a banker" vibe? Can they even place well into traditional exit opps in two years? Are elite boutique bankers gonna crush, or are Eboutiques gonna drop their pay to match street?

hey guys, just a quick q for a job fair with a few ibds at large BBs. i have some semi-thick matte paper, which is fantastic quality but i think it's too much to print my resume on. what you guys think? is that a proper way to stand out at a career fair at a non-t uni?

I understand there's hardly any pitching, which took 80% of the time in my internship. So what are some of the day in the life tasks for execution junior bankers: 1. Modelling 2. Legal documentation 3. data room access and monitoring 4. Preparing bids 4. Organising roadshows (if working with ECM team, for eg) Are these the main ones or am I missing some blatantly obvious ones that they would ask in the interview? Thank youuu!
