I have started my first month at Bentley university as a freshman. I've joined the investment club and IB club and have started to connect on LinkedIn with Bentley alumni in Boston. My goal is to go into Asset Management in Boston and I have connections at MFS (Aunt is an associate). I wanted to ask is Bentley too non-target to get into this field and should I apply to Boston College or any other target near me? I know that at Bentley I will have to network 10x harder but is it better to be a big fish in a small pond at Bentley? or I am risking it by not transferring else where?

Do any of you have impressions of Bracebridge Capital? Seems to be a great fund, albeit slightly under the radar. How would you say an internship opportunity or a fresh graduate opportunity with them compares to that of some of the other firms in the industry. I know the likes of Citadel and DE Shaw may have great training programs as well. But how important would hedge fund reputation vs quality training be at this early stage in my career? Any insights would be invaluable!

Hi monkeys, I've got a 3 bed room apartment at Avalon North Station on a higher floor unit. My two other roommates I was supposed to move in with won't be coming back to Boston till later this year due to extended WFH. So looking for 2 roommates to replace them. I'll be moving to Boston and working in the financial district iA this coming summer (hopefully post-pandemic). Which neighborhoods are the most practical for someone who wants to keep the rent very low with roommates while staying close to my office? I'm expected to have tough hours so ideally where I can walk from work or very short commute. Thanks!

Hi guys, I recently came across DDJ Capital Management, an $8bn High Yield Opportunistic boutique fund near Boston that's been investing in HY since the 1990s, but it doesn't seem to get many mentions on WSO. Aside from the fact that they do some aggressive CCC bottoms-up investing, does anyone have any other information about the fund and how they operate? It looks like they started out as a distressed fund and morphed their strategy more into stressed/upper tier, but have stayed relatively small in terms of headcount despite an $8bn AUM. To the extent you're aware, is DDJ viewed positively

Hello all, I know this topic has been asked before but I couldn't find any that really matched my description so bear with me as I ask again. I am moving to Boston in January for a consulting gig and am needing suggestions on where to live. I am willing to spend a little more $1500-2700 month for an apartment, have a nicer new car so parking is a concern, and like to go out to nightclubs/bars on the weekends. I like hanging out with boujier women so that is a concern as well lol. Based on this description, can any Boston people give me suggestions on where to live? I have heard from future

Aloha Monkeys, I'm currently separating the military (think Air Force or Navy) to finish my degree at a traditional undergraduate institution (I will either be a Sophmore or Junior). I will either be attending UPenn (non-Wharton), Georgetown MSB, or Cornell AEM. I want to work in Boston and start my career there. I have seen a lot of people mention posts to networking (I have no idea what the hell that means really) and cold emailing people (I have a few people added on LinkedIn). I'm curious to know would it make sense to fly to Boston at least once this summer and try to run into an MD or VP

NYC and SF look to be the top placement cities for almost all the MBA programs. What other cities fall into the top tier of business opportunities for MBAs? DC? Chicago? Toronto? Boston? Dallas/Houston? Atlanta? LA? I am considering a relocation from western Canada and wondering if there is anywhere worth going with a lot of action and no ridiculous cost of living like SF/NYC. Chicago has always attracted me and I've recently been blown away by how much Toronto has developed. Also it sort of appears as though LA, although a global iconic city, has fewer typical corporate opportunities and is

Seeking some advice on which B-School I should attend. I'm a former Army Officer who's been out for about a year now. I was a logistician so not likely to get a huge bump like a pilot or SOCOM guy, nor did I go to West Point. I went to a well regarded New England state school for undergrad but not a school that carries a lot of weight outside of New England. Since I got out, I've been working as the director of sales and finance for a tech startup. During my time we've gone from 20 paying customers to over 400, and I led our successful $2.5M capital raise. Stats: - Double major: finance &

I am a current sophomore at Wash U which is a semi-target/target for top consulting firms. I am not a URM and I have a rounded 4.0 GPA. I'm majoring in economics and financial engineering, a program to which I had to apply. Junior year I will recruit for top consulting firms and be flexible to office location but this summer I would love to be home in Boston. I have been applying to some big names across both finance and consulting, but haven't had any luck. I believe that if I got a first round I could impress people, but I'm struggling to get an interview. I don't have any connections and

Hi Guys, Wondering if there are any broad, universally accepted differences between doing the job (as a 1st year IB Analyst) in Boston versus NYC? Obviously, it seems like Boston compensation is discounted a bit to NYC, but, are Boston hours correspondingly less? Is the culture different? Thanks!

Hi everyone, I'm a first-semester finance and accounting major at a non-target state school in Massachusetts and I'm interested in firms that offer full-time summer internships to people in my situation. I'm mostly interested in PE and IB (obviously), but I'm more than open to experiencing different avenues within the industry (real estate, M&A, etc.). I am a 22 year old who transferred into finance from civil engineering and finding that I did not like the industry after completing two internships in Cambridge. Any advice on the topic is appreciated. Thank you for reading, Nate

I am applying and interviewing for Associate Consulting positions. Most of them are located in Tier 1 cities (SF, NYC, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles etc). I have experience living in Los Angeles and know of the paper cuts that end up adding up to total cost of living (the fact there is no parking and must be paid at all times, poor public transportation, awful traffic everywhere). Does anyone know (esp those experienced in multiple) of the most affordable tier I city? If I got an offer in multiple cities, I would like to be wise to choose the best.

WSO, I'm at a pivotal point in my life where I need to make decisions in order to set myself up for BB IBD fall recruitment. I am interested in either a top BB (GS, JPM, MS), or an EB (Laz, HL, EC, Centerview). I was at a non-target, but I have recently put down my deposit to transfer to a target school for next fall as a junior. My parents are still hesitant on co-signing a loan, but I am determined to make it work. I have recently received a summer internship offer from a MM investment bank that specializes in digital marketing M&A located in midtown NYC. The internship is unpaid, and I do

Hi everybody, I stumbled across this forum while searching for a new laptop and had to sign up right away. I am currently an undergraduate senior in college and will be looking to land my first job for when I graduate in 5-6 months. Most of my experience so far is in accounting in various settings. I am hoping to pursue a career in wealth management with my main focus on financial advising. I am looking forward to being a part of this forum and connecting with other people with similar interests. Nick

(Updated by ITF after a good strong drink, 4/22/2013) Whether it's your first time at one of these events or you just need a refresher on the rules of etiquette, these are the "best practices" for WSO Happy Hours to ensure maximum enjoyment. Bear in mind that these are social events and should be treated as such. You will hopefully meet and talk shop with many of your fellow monkeys, but this is NOT a pure networking event in the traditional sense. That being said, some of your fellow simians and I have collated the following WSO Happy Hour Best Practices: 1. Thou shall make every reasonable attempt to attend said happy hours, provided that thou hast attaindst the twenty-first year of thine age.

I just watched "The Town", and I want to work in Boston one day (Think 10 years down the line). Except for pension fund management, and a certain large endowment fund, I can't really think of much out there. I only ever faced two hedge funds there, one EM fund and one event driven one, but that also might have to do that I am very Euro focused, as well as being based in London, and most Boston funds have no interest in the sh.t I trade. What type of people work there (family oriented, what about young arrogant pricks?) What do hedge funds in Boston usually specialise in? (I know it's vague, but whatev', I do what I want) If you were to compare Boston to New York, how would you compare the two? Anything you got on Boston.

Hi everyone, I wanted to share two recent travel experiences that highlight the differences between a night's stay at a hotel vs. Airbnb. Who do you think fared better? The hotel chain with over 100 years of experience or the online company that has been around for 4 years. For some background on these events, both trips took place in Boston within 3 months of each other. Same location, but very different experiences.... Hotel Chain I won't name names but this hotel is part of the largest organization of hotels and resorts in the world. Here is the timeline of events: 1. I go to Kayak.com to find the best rates/location for accommodations in Boston

I'll be starting as an entry-level management consultant in Boston this Summer and I need some ideas on where to live. I'd like to keep rent to under $800 a month and I have a car, so parking is necessary. I'd also be living with my friend, so we're looking for a 2BR. I'll be commuting to work on the my workplace is in the Financial District and I want my commute to be as short as possible. I'm thinking about the Allston area because there are some decent food options around. I really would love to live right on Brighton Ave in Allston, but there don't seem to be many places available. Do you guys have any recommendations in terms of neighborhoods and realtors to seek out?

Afternoon Monkeys, Any Red Sox fans here on WSO? How about MMORPG fans? Maybe there's some fans of government sponsored VC failure? Well, if you inexplicably landed in all three categories, the recent Bloomberg article by Jonathan Mahler discussing Rhode Island's ill advised foray into the world of VC via Curt Schilling's 38 Studios is probably old news. For the rest of you who may be less familiar with the story, the complete meltdown of 38 Studios and nearly $100 million of Rhode Island's money is worth a read. Also, as Mahler notes, for those of you currently at HBS, an in depth look may be

I'm going to be working in Boston this summer and wanted to know what the city is like. Obviously it's not as exciting as the school year since the students are gone. And the city doesn't have nearly as many interns as NYC or Chicago. But is the social scene really that bad during the summer? How's the nightlife?

Any feedback as to career progression and exit opportunities in Fund Accounting would be immensely appreciated? Also, I am open to any other opportunities if anyone knows of any other entry-level positions in Boston or even NYC? I've been working in Boston since I graduated last May doing strategy consulting. I've been in my firm's Boston office for about 5 months now and so far I'm loving it. The work-life balance is amazing and I love the people I work with. Now, I have the opportunity to relocate to my firm's Dallas offices. I would really, really appreciate it if I could get a decent discussion on this going.. I don't have any bananas to give out but I know WSO can be a great breeding ground for good-willed commentary and discussions. I know it's a tedious read and am aware of the TL;DR phenomenon.. please make an exception for my case!

Alright for those of us that are about to begin our final year (next week...gasp) in college and are working on recruitment for IB, I figured I'd make a thread so we can keep each other in the "know" as to who's recruiting when and what positions. This is for USA positions as well as UK. Also, for anyone that's already in IB that works at some of these firms that are recruiting and knows the schedules, feel free to post. I know DB and CS in London are recruiting. Wells Fargo Investment Banking applications go from September 20th-September 25th. JPM Chase applications are also start in September. Not sure as exact dates but a recruiter told me "beginning of September". This is for FT recruiting, not SA. Also, please don't post your resume for people to check.

I am beginning to look into some RE investment companies in the Boston area and am curious to learn more about acquisitions analyst salaries as well as the required background/experience required to land an acquisitions analyst job. From what I have been able to dig up online so far it seems like salaries vary greatly from firm to firm but I wanted to see if anyone had any input. Here are some of the companies I am looking at: Beacon Capital Partners, Rockpoint Group, AEW Capital, Berkshire Property Advisors, Boston Properties, CBRE Global Investors, TA Associates Realty, Long Wharf RE Partners, Alcion Ventures, Wheelock Street Capital... Any information anyone has would be great.

I just got offered a Co-Op opportunity that would take place in Boston from January 2nd through the end of May. I'm not originally from Boston and I don't have any family in the area. Any help is greatly appreciated, I'm kinda at a loss here.

Hello fellow monkeys, I'm currently preparing for FT recruitment this fall in Europe. I'm aiming for MBB + 2nd tier consulting firms. To give you some background information, I go to a target university in Europe and my recent internship was with a boutique consulting firm. hey guys - i just graduated and am trying to decide where to go for my full time job. I have one major offer each in NYC, DC, Boston, Houston TX, and Philly. Anyone living in those cities on a first year salary want to help us out with your monthly budget breakdown? Would be greatly appreciated and would help lots of us on this board. Not sure which city is worth it after taxes and living expenses. But just from a gut feeling, I feel DC would be worth my money more, even if my potential total comp in NYC could be 100k but my base in a DC tech job is $79k with no bonus.

How many of you on the list are from Boston? Boston is known as a buyside city, maybe an insurance city, and lately a political city. What do people do here? Do these opportunities exist here in Boston? - Bulge Bracket IB - Prop Desks - Sell Side equity/FI desks This city more than most is a boutique town (ignoring of course the large buyside players). There are pockets of amazing jobs at small hedge funds, pe shops, buy side trading, but I feel like you have to be in the gentleman's club to get there. These shops do not come recruiting or have super days. How do you break into this secret world? I'm 1 year out now from a target with a good GPA and a BB internship. Currently at a different BB, but really want to get paid. Coming out in last years job market really manifested some low ball offers. Feel free to PM me with any opportunities or if you just want to discuss my perception of the Boston market.

Hey Monkeys, I'm a junior just finishing an internship at a boutique consulting firm. During my stay I got really well with the MD and will be receiving a recommendation letter from him. I'd like to know if its a good idea to send the letter of recommendation alongside my resume and cover letter when applying next fall for full time recruiting. My ultimate goal is to land an offer with MBB next recruiting season and, aside from preparing the case interviews, I'd like to maximize my chances of getting invited to interviews just in case my networking doesn't reach too far. My GPA is not stellar but I'm in the top 15-20% of my class at a target school in Spain. I have great extracurriculars and the experience I gained at my current internship is really great.

I'm considering applying to Northeastern for the MSF there. As many of the programs are regional and employment relies heavily on name brands, especially in IB, what are people's thoughts on the program? Is it any good? How does it compare to BU, BC? How does it place in NYC, Washington? Thoughts would be appreciated!

Does anyone know anything about this firm? Hoping to do buyside equity research or at least be involved in mutual/hedge funds in the Boston area.
