~15 year career as an investment banking analyst/associate in ECM (SPACs) and leveraged finance/restructuring, hedge fund analyst/portfolio manager and currently as a corporate finance executive for a fast-growing start-up (led $70mm equity raise process). Have interviewed and spearheaded recruiting for investment banking, hedge fund and start-ups. If you're trying to break into investment banking, can give you mock interviews. Love mentoring young professionals and learning from others. Am decent with excel modeling, but am aware why model assumptions are way more important than the actual

I have a superday coming up for a Leveraged Finance coverage group and I was wondering if anyone has any info on what I should focus on outside of the standard IB guides? The interview is for a first year analyst position (I'm a senior in undergrad rn). I know LevFin is a bit different than the other IB groups and because of this I want to make sure I have my technicals down, so any advice on how to additionally prep would be appreciated. Thanks.

Making the switch to consulting from IB. I have an interview at MBB rapidly approaching. Never done a consulting interview, read a case or really done any prep. I'm pretty green if you can't tell. Is it realistic to ace an interview after, say, 3 days (~30 hours) of prep? Know kids have been prepping for years. But I wanted to hear perspectives from those in consulting and especially those who came from an IB summer stint. Don't know how many skills are transferable from banking recruitment.

For those of you that are like me and currently interviewing in Investment Banking out of undergrad, someone posted the PDF of the Wall Street Prep Investment Banking Guide for 2021. IMO I think it is better than the M&I 400 guide. Google ""wall street prep guide 2021" and scroll down

Mod Note (Andy) - as the year comes to an end we're reposting the top discussions from 2015, this one ranks #38 and was originally posted 11/29/2015. 4 Summer Analyst Interview Prep Tactics I recently completed SA recruiting and wanted to share a few of the techniques that I utilized to become a much more effective interviewee. My background is a junior at top 5 or so target in terms of IBD interns per year with a high GPA and strong extracurricular activities. Going into the process, I thought my qualifications would propel me to an offer but I was sorely mistaken. My first interviews with an

Has anyone taken the courses and gotten the certification? I was told by a few senior people that taking this would look great on the resume and would help me lateral into an underwriting analyst role, since I am in an entirely different industry at the moment. Any thoughts or comments on this? Any other suggestions on what I can do to stand out as a lateral applicant?

I graduate with my Master's in Accounting this December. I don't start my FT IB Analyst job until July 2021, leaving me 7 months of down time. I originally allocated this time to study for the CPA exam, but given that I won't be working in public accounting, I won't be able to become "licensed" despite having passed all four parts... is this process even worth it? What pains me about the CPA is dropping $3k+ on test prep materials (my firm won't reimburse me) for an exam that won't allow me to get "licensed," so I'm concerned that this endeavor would be a huge waste of time and money. Does

I have a superday coming up with a middle market investment bank for the government and defense team and I was wondering if anyone knew of industry specific metrics or measurables I should be aware of going into these interviews. Anything would help! Also, does anyone have an idea of what exit ops are like from this area of focus, specifically to a BB or Boutique? I know its way way too early to be thinking about that but was just curious. Thanks!

I have an interview with a large consulting firm in a week and have no idea how to start to prepare. I wasn't really expecting to get the interview, so I hadn't done much. Any resources you guys would recommend? I have Case in Point. learning how to do a case interview in one week? If you are learning how to do a case interview in a short period of time, it is important to have a plan. First, you should check the recruiting website of the firm you are interviewing with as many firms will provide a guide for how to approach the case interview. You should review this first. After you've reviewed

3 of my professors get it; 2 of them don't. How do you guys handle this? My Spanish professor is taking offense that I have had to miss her class twice (it's every day) and is being pretty passive aggressive. I spoke to her about this a couple of weeks in advance and forwarded her confirmation emails that verify the time and date, but she is still refusing to let me make up things that I've missed & basically to work around these minor scheduling inconveniences. I don't mean this sarcastically: is it too much to expect professors to understand what we're going through/the significance of the

Hi all, I'm a Canadian in IB and I was wondering who else had used BreakingBayStreet for interview prep? For those who don't know, BreakingBayStreet is a Canadian version of Breaking Into Wall Street. I tried it and had a terrible experience and I'd like to hear more stories. For those of you considering using their services, I would highly recommend against it.

What are some specific resources that will prepare me for interviews in general? There are threads which list what to expect in IB interviews but what are some books/articles that will help in answering those types of behavioral questions.

The key to this question is providing an in-depth answer that lasts roughly 2 minutes in length. You need to make sure that you give enough info without providing a novel of an answer. You should briefly mention where you grew up, where you attended college (and better why you decided to pick the college), what your major is (and why your choose it). When discussing your college experience, be sure to highlight any summer internships (professional) even if they are non-finance related and any clubs where you have a leadership role on campus. Be sure to focus your response on professional

There's been more than a few questions floating around WSO about the interview Stock Pitch. How to do it? What to look for? Does it really matter? Well, Mebane Faber of Cambria Investment Management has laid out an excellent basic guide on stock picking right here, taken off his notes from his security analysis class under Tiger Cub John Griffin, so I'm pretty sure this'll help more than a few monkeys on the first two questions. As for the third, yes, it does. And besides, what do you have to lose being prepared? Here's a few points from his overview... Qualitative Analysis Industry Study

"I want to make a lot of money" doesn't seem like a good answer, so how do you all answer this question? Why Do you Want to Work in Finance? This is a critical interview question that you will be asked in almost any intern interview or change of career interview. How to Answer "Why this" Questions Why do you want to do finance or investment banking? Why this firm? Why are you a good fit? Research the firm beforehand - what their "About Page" focuses on, what values and principles they abide by. Tailor these answers for each firm or industry and practice them. Given that we're in the middle of interviews, I thought it may be helpful to re-post this Q&A. If there is one thing for certain you're going to need to perfect for an upcoming interview, it's your personal pitch. Wall Street Mentor Jewell breaks down how to develop your personal pitch, as well as how to make it concise and compelling. Wall Street Prep's Puneeth Kumar recently caught up with Melinda Barrow, the graduate recruiting & development coordinator at Rothschild. For the uninitiated, Rothschild is a venerable global advisory firm, and remains privately owned by the Rothschild family. Rothschild operates in 42 countries, employing 3000 people. In the United States, business divisions include financial advisory, mergers and acquisitions advisory, restructuring, and equity markets advisory. What does Rothschild look for in a good candidate?

My first question is whether Blueshift is even real. I've had multiple interviews with them (I'm speaking with the COO/CFO tomorrow), but there is shockingly little about them online. That includes their website (Blueshift.am). Searches for "Blueshift" on WSO returned no results. My real question: if they are semi-legit, dies anyone have any ideas on what I should expect? I'm interviewing for a quant strategist opening. I recently received my PhD in physics, and I'm very well-versed in multiple programming languages (especially Python), but I have zero finance background. The job description

I have faced this question in a couple of PE interviews now and wanted to check out what the forum thinks the best way to tackle this would be? Essentially the question is "how do valuation multiples vary across sectors". the question came in different forms but essentially it would be something like which sector would have higher multiples telecom or hospitals or logistics vs print media and so on. My answer has been to broadly focus on the cash flow generation and the growth prospects to give an answer. How would you guys do it?

That said, it seems kind of strange that they're hosting on blogspot right now.

Hi guys, Was hoping I could get some help for an interview I got that I'm a bit nervous about. It's for an endowment and they told me the next step will be an case where I need to demonstrate manager selection (role is an asset allocation seat) - they'll give me the information and I have 24 hours to explain if I would invest in the manager and why. Anyone who's had these type of interviews that could offer any advice?

Final round interview in approximately 5 hours (with 1 hour needed to get down there). How do I prepare? What I think I should know: 1. Technicals - valuation, merger models, accounting, I've spent a lot of time here 2. Walk through resume 3. Why the firm 4. Why the location 5. Why IB 6. Recent deals done by the firm in that location 7. Example of leadership Anything else I'm missing that I should be prepared for? Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone, First, I want to thank all of you for all the informative commentary on current topics, and questions as it relates to finance news and interview prep. I've been reading this site for quite some time but mostly read instead of contributing (until now). I have an interview for a cross-asset sales job with GS next week. Any problem solving type questions? Any and all feedback is appreciated

I've scheduled an informal phone conversation with a PE Exec in my extended network, and I need to know what to focus on as far as prep (I have two weeks). So far I have in mind: 1) Pick up as much technical finance knowledge relevant to PE as I can (I have zero finance experience and limited training) 2) Research the exec and the firm thoroughly 3) Polish my answers to "why PE?", "why this firm?", etc. in case those are brought up This should be a fairly laid-back conversation but I want to come across as serious about wanting to get into PE to set the stage for future conversations.

Wall Street Prep recently sat down with Tara Place, the Sr. Associate Director of Corporate Outreach for Babson's Undergraduate Center for Career Development. Her responsibilities include overseeing the recruiting program and building recruiting partnerships with companies. What did you do prior to taking on this position? I worked at Fidelity Investments for over 10 years and held various management roles including Director of Human Resource Process Consulting and Director of College Relations. What advice would you give to applicants with a lower GPA? Under 3.0: It's important to focus on your story. You should be able to deliver some background on your academics without becoming defensive. Feel free to note any external factors that could play a role in your GPA. - - For example, a student athlete with an advanced course load could be in this situation. The most important thing is to focus on all of your positive attributes including your passion for the industry and company you are interviewing with and your unique skill set and experiences. All of these will offer a picture of a well-rounded individual, regardless of your GPA. After a meeting or interview, how important are thank you notes?

Can someone who gets free access to Moody's and other sell-side ER please lend me a hand getting hold of three particular bits of research? Two are from Moody's, are q a few months old, and are to do with a paper I'm writing at the moment. One is for a company who I've got an interview with in a few weeks and want to beaver up on: covered by BAML, GS, Barclays, CS and Jefferies. Ideally looking for someone who has access to them to be able to PM me the .pdf's, but any advice on how to get hold of them would be amazing.
