I've been studying for the SIE using Knopman Marks for about a month, averaging an hour a day or so..but more hrs/day now that I have to test soon. I read the textbook and am going through their online videos... I have an economics/finance background in college. How long did it take you guys to study for and pass the exam?

Hey all, I'm thinking about doing execution trading for a career, and I was wondering what tests I would have to pass in order to be able to do that job? I'm assuming the series 7, but not sure if there are any others that I would have to take.

I have Knopman Marks textbooks (SIE and S7) as well as online access to the S7 stuff (it's really really good). I'd be happy to let go of any combo you may choose for a fair price. Located in NY. If this isn't kosher on this forum apologies in advance.

Hello WSO Readers, I'm curious to know if a Series 7 is a must for 1-2 year Entry Level position Client Service Associate to switch to IB role. I know most requirements for BBs says "Serie 7 or CFA preferred" but does none license holders still get hired? Any BO or MO that made the jump to IB role without licensing? Any feedback is much appreciated.

Been watching on here for quite a while, I would say since about fall of 2015. Reading all the different reactions to the Series 7, ranging from, and I quote here, "If you can fog a mirror, you can pass the 7" to "A decent work ethic and a mediocre amount of time will allow you get a passing score; keep in mind it is one of the harder series tests." Imagine my discern when I was scoring low 70's on all my practice exams...I guess I wasn't able to fog a mirror...lol. Regardless, one of the senior brokers told me to just go ahead and schedule an exam for two weeks from that day. Two weeks go by

Anybody else in the process of studying? My exam date is Jan 15th and currently studying chapter 12 (municipal securities). I have been making a study guide as I go through each chapter, I can post it if anybody's interested. To those in the field of Asset Management/Wealth Management. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on how they made the jump from analyst to PM/RM in the wealth management field. I'm a fairly recent college grad, and currently an analyst at a boutique wealth management firm and I'm planning for my future with regards to how I should direct my efforts to make the jump from analyst to PM. I have heard a lot of differing opinions, i.e., go back to b-school and get your MBA, get your CFA, CFP, seek sponsorships for Series 7/66/ etc, or just bypass additional education for now and put all

Failed series 7 exam with a 69% using STC provided material from my firm. Consequently, I switched over to KnopmanMarks and passed my exam with a 78%. I can tell you from experience what a difference did it make to switch from providers. In my personal opinion, STC material is very outdated and does not prepare you enough for the actual exam. With Knopman, they provide you with the Kaplan Q-Bank witch is very good and they also use some internal PDF exams, very old school, but very good! I found their material is very up to date and the questions are very similar to what is asked in the actual

Hey folks, So I'm starting FT in BB S&T this fall. I have to take the Series 7 and Series 63 in August and I have two major questions: 1. Do I actually need to spend a significant amount of time studying to pass? I majored in Finance and Accounting in college and read the first couple chapters of the book my bank sent me to prepare and it all seemed like review (at least for the 7). Should I really read a whole textbook on shit I already know? 2. Does my employer see my actual score, or just that I passed? I would be a lot more motivated to spend a ton of time preparing if I thought I was

MOD NOTE: HILARIOUS WSO SPAM FAIL I want to share a great opportunity and my experience with a program I have recently completed. I took a class to attain my license for the Series 7, through a 4 day preparation class and how I got a job through the program. I took this class because I am interested in working as a Wall Street stock broker and i was always into trading. The instructor was very kind to tell me every thing I needed to know to ace the exams (It also didn't hurt that it was a 100% pass guarantee or you can retake the course for free until you pass). The instructor was also very helpful in assisting me with any questions I had about Wall Street or finance.

Seeing as there have been a few recent posts about the NASD/FINRA Licensing exams, I thought it would be prudent to discuss them with you guys, since most of you monkeys looking for full-time employment on the street will need to take them in some way, shape or form. Very simply, the licensing exams are a necessity across the board for almost everything you do on the Sell-Side. If you work for a broker/dealer or for a firm that inventories their own assets you might need a license. If you're in sales and trading or do equity research, you will need it. If you're doing any sort of client

I am trying to take the Series 7 and 66 a year from now and have started studying. I have been looking for a FINRA firm to sponsor me, does anybody know which firms are easier to get sponsorship from? I am still in college and want to have this designation before I graduate or right around the time I graduate, assuming I would pass. What is the Series 7 and Series 66? The series 7, also known as the General Securities Representative Exam (GSRE), is a test for registered representatives, or stockbrokers to get their license to trade. It is a 6 hour exam held in 2 3-hour sessions with 260

Recent graduate and soon to be unemployed again when my analyst internship wears off. Will definitely have some time on my hands while I continue to seek out some jobs and wondering what else to do in the meantime to keep myself competitive. Any programs or self-study materials available which would reflect positively on a resume? CFA, Series 7? What else can I be doing so as to not fall behind? Thx!

Hello, I am starting a full time Analyst position in NYC this summer at a BB Private Bank. I know that I will need to take the Series 7 and pass. When will I need to take the exam (ie. within a few months of my start date)? Can I take it before I start my position? Am I supposed to be "sponsored" or anything like that (I thought someone mentioned something like that to me)? Also, will I need to take the Series 63? I know HR will tell me everything I need to know soon, enough. I'm just hoping to get a leg up now that I'm taking an easy course load second semester. Thanks very much for your help

Is there anyone here who got a Series 7 license before their internship between junior and senior year? What are the pros and cons of getting one before then? Does it look good or bad in interviews or does it not matter? Also, what looks good on a resume besides just GPA, extracurriculars, etc? What stands out?

If any one is taking the Series 7 this summer, you might find this useful. I condensed the first half of the empire stock broker institute book. If any one finds the first half useful, I'll post the second part some time next week. Also, for those who are taking the CFA,I was wondering if you found the investopedia summary comprehensive. Good luck to all those interning this summer! http://www.scribd.com/doc/32220948/Series-7-Notes…

I recently landed a high paying job with a well know financial institution that is going to sponsor me to take the Series 7 exam at some point in 2013. As someone who has no/minimal knowledge of the topics that are on the exam, how realistic is it to go from know-nothing to passing the exam? Or is my situation fairly common?

Hey all, I am taking my Series 7 in 9 days, and have been hammering out practice tests the past week. I have been getting scores between 68-75, with only one test being a passing score. Today I took two tests; one was a 68 and the other a 71. I am starting to freak out. Any recommendations?

I recently accepted an offer from a relatively young boutique AM firm a couple months ago, but today they told me I need to mail in a ck for 1,000$ to cover the costs of Series 7, Series 66 and Series 6 exams and that it will be reimbursed after the three-month probationary period. Is it conventional for a firm to ask this of you? Am i being scammed?

so I have my Series 7 (and 63) and I'm having a rough time in sales. Granted I've been working on wall st less than one year but I thought the 7 would open more doors for me. I can work for alot of different firms in sales so that's a big plus, and I've met alot of interesting characters from guys who have made $100k in their second year in the biz too $500k but I'm not really a sales guy and I've met alot of guys who are broke at the end of second year (more so of the latter) and I'm becoming more and more convinced I will be broke too. I'm considering a new career path but not sure which? So

Taking the Series 7, I have STC but I do not like there study materials. Thinking about buying Pass Perfect has anyone had success with there material in Passing? Thanks for the feedback!

How much does it cost to take the Series 7 and do brokerage firms generally pay the cost or do stockbroker trainees have to pay out of pocket? Thanks.
27 Mar 2011
So I've been using Kaplan after using PassPerfect for awhile and feeling like it was doing me no good. I read the majority of the Kaplan book and I'm taking QBank quizzes now. I alternate between doing 10-15 at a time and then doing 125 when I have the time. Right now I'm averaging in the mid 70% range on the QBank questions but I've heard people say Kaplan is generally more difficult than the actual exam. So I guess my question would be, is it? How does the Kaplan QBank stack up compared to the actual exam?

I thought I'd share this. A while back, I asked about how to distinguish oneself and break into Equity S&T but you don't yet have the Series 7 and cannot currently get it because you're not with a broker dealer. Assuming however, that you have the Series 6 and want to get more licenses on your own, an option would be to get the Series 55 which is an equity trader license. However, to get the Series 55, you have to already have a Series 7 OR you can go in the backdoor and get the Series 62 license. So for me, that may be my plan of execution as well. Get the Series 62 license and then get the Series 55. To my knowledge, the Series 62 does NOT require sponsorship. If anyone knows otherwise, let me know.

I am looking to join the NYSE after a stint at a BB. Will I loose my Series 7 & 63 licences while I'm there? I don't believe if they are a FINRA member firm (not a broker/dealer), but their may be exceptions. Any insights?

I'm working at a boutique IB and have both my series 7 and 63. Are there any other FINRA administered licenses worth getting? I would like to add something to my resume other then the CFA. Also, has anyone heard of getting your AVA (Accredited Valuation Analyst)? It is supposed to be easier and quicker then the CFA. I'm thinking about that as well.

When you quit your job and go to school. Does your Series 7 automatically get shut down? Or does it stay active until your next renewal date. I am basically asking so that I know how to properly reflect it in my resume.
12 Sep 2012
I wanted to get some feedback from experienced people who have seen this. Although you may not be on that side of the business (anything sales related or security product related), does anyone know what's the rule on this? Once your licenses expire and you have no intention of reviving them, do you leave them on your resume and just note "expired", or should they come off entirely? Does it depend? Thx.

I have an investment banking research internship this summer. Due to my living circumstances, I have a little over an hour commute each way on the bus. During this time, I was thinking of studying for the Series 7/63. Would a firm sponsor me even if I am only a summer intern if I picked up the expenses? Also, would this increase my value as an applicant for boutique recruiting? I am a recent accounting and finance graduate at a non-target (top 25 B-School). I have had multiple internships, but most of them have been accounting based. Only recently have I started focusing on Finance. I just took the CFA and have had one internship at a very small investment bank.

So I am an undergrad at a well known (not ivy league) business school majoring in Finance. This summer I received my Series 7 and Series 66 licenses. I was wondering if anyone knows how valuable this is as a resume booster. I understand that in 3 or 4 years, these licenses don't mean anything really, but i feel they are very beneficial for someone who hasn't even graduated yet.

I am going to be starting as an IBD analyst at BAML this summer...Does anyone know if the bank makes its incoming analyst class take the Series 7/63? I gather that some BBs require their incoming IBD analysts take the tests, while others do not I would like to know so I can get the prep books now and just glance over them in my free time for the next couple of months.

I recently quit my job due to pay cuts. I took my Series 7 on Feb, 4 2011 and 63 on Feb 11th, 2011. To my understanding they expire 2 years later, so on Feb 4, 2013 and Feb 11, 2013 respectively. Is there any way I can do the CE without have a firm sponsor them or table them somehow? Every time I call FINRA they do not help.

I have a ob at a prop desk that is merging with a hedge fund. I have been studying for the Series 7 and the guy at my prop desk told me that I no longer need to take the Series 7 because we are merging with the fund. I will still be doing the exact same job and trading intra day. Does anyone know why I do not need to take the Series 7 anymore? He told me it is because I will no longer be a registered representative. Was wondering if anyone had some more insight?

I'm graduating undergrad in Spring 2016. I'm currently interning at a regional MM in IB. I was planning on studying for the GMAT this summer and taking it. I had planned on studying for 2-3 months. Should I also study/take the Series 7 this summer? Most of all, with me personally, given my school and background, I feel like it would be something good to add to my story recruiting for FT. I have to take it eventually anyway. I think my internship would let me study 2-3 hours a day while working for the Series 7 - the GMAT I'm not so sure. Might this be a good idea? Should I ask my boss if I

I have been hearing that a series 7 is not required to be a PM or HF Manager. It just brings unnecessary regulation. A series 65 is all that is required. If this true? If I wanted to manage money from clients of my own. I would legally need only a series 65 correct? Thanks, Nick
