Need to get my wardrobe ready for my FT IBD gig. Wanted to make a thread where all of us could give feedback (argue) over what is the best brands/styles for analysts. 1. Dress Shirts - All I have experienced is Nordstrom and the Bloomies branded shirts. Bloomies absolutely suck and they make me look fat. The Nordstrom ones are decent. Each about $50-60. 2. Ties - Ferragamo and Hermes are VERY nice ties. Although they are $130-160 a pop. I have a LV tie that I really like, but need other recommendations. 3. Suits - Zegna by far I think is the best suit you can buy. I also have a Hugo Boss, but need at least one more. Ideas?

I personally would hate to wear a tie EVERY single day. Is wearing a tie the norm in the finance industry? I know a few places or regions where the lifestyle is very laid back and ties are not required unless you have to meet with a client or something. In my current job we have to dress nice but ties are definitely not required. It's almost like if you wear a tie you look like a dumbass and out of place...I prefer this over having a damn noose around my neck everyday... Your input is appreciated.

Just looking for some opinions on where you think the best places to look for ties online are. Looking for ties in the $50-$125 neighborhood that SA interns could wear. Thanks

The Four-in-Hand, Prince Albert, Half-Windsor, and Full Windsor (aka Double Windsor) knots seem to be the most popular ways to tie a tie in general; which is considered the best look knot in the banking/finance world? How do you tie yours?

I have Solid white and Solid Light blue shirts. I have a navy and charcoal suit. What do you guys think of the following ties. I am required to have a tie on majority of time at work this summer so I need about 5-10 ties. I really value my appearance but have no taste in ties at all. http://www.thetiebar.com/order_page.asp?pn=13656&… http://www.thetiebar.com/order_page.asp?pn=13499&… http://www.thetiebar.com/order_page.asp?pn=13609&…

There's got to be some kind of catch here. Unless "pre-owned" means "really noticeably poor," why would there be any reason not to get ties on eBay? I only have a few I bought in high school and they're from the local Kohl's / WalMart... Hermes ties for $7-20? http://cgi.ebay.com/HERMES-BLUE-RED-DESIGN-TIE-MA… $100 for all of this.. http://cgi.ebay.com/20-LOT-TIE-TIES-HERMES-GUCCI-… Isn't this kind of ridiculous? 300 ties for $40 + 33 shipping; less than 25 cents for one tie... and they say "some great designer brands included."

Just got promoted to a level where it's finally acceptable to wear higher end clothing. First order of business...get a new hermes tie. It's kinda hard to figure out what looks the most classic/timeless, is there anyone out there who can help a brother out? http://usa.hermes.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/C… Thanks in advance

Was gifted some Nordstrom (1 normal and 1 John W brand) and David Donahue ties for Xmas. Used to wear Nordstrom and DD ties for high school and they seemed lower quality, although the ones I received seem much nicer. Normal patterns/colors/widths (i.e. would be appropriate in a banking setting). However, would I be better off trading them in for fewer nicer ties (such as Canali or Zegna)?

Imagine that you are turning up for an interview. You want to look good-aggressive, and yet subdued. You want to leave a lasting impression. You want to get an offer. How might you do that? With a good suit of course! Therefore here are a few things you need to know about suits: The fit of your suit. When you first purchase a suit, don't buy it just because it's cheap. Remember, a suit, if taken cared of, can last over ten years! Although we understand that not every one of us can afford Cesare Attolini or Kiton, we still need a good fit. Here are some handy tips for when you are trying suits on.

I've heard good things about Indochino's suits but how about their shirts/ties? I have trouble finding a good fit in retail stores and I just prefer buying stuff online rather than spending hours browsing a store.

Over the week, I heard a story of a father bestowing his life's collection of ties to his son who was about to graduate college and begin at the bottom of the corporate ladder. For me, hearing such a story touched one of my rare soft spots. Just stop for a second and think about accruing a collection for over 30 years, and the story that this collection would tell. If well kept, the classics, or older ties might show the harder, more frugal times in the father's professional career; while the newer Ferragamo's could display hard earned, hierarchal success. I believe that a tie says a lot about

Hey WSO community, you've been helpful so many times, would you mind helping me with another little questions? I am in PE recruiting stage now, and advanced a lot with one upper MM fund. Passed two analysts, four associates, three VPs, financial modelling homework, and now final stage - lunch with MD on Monday. Should I wear a tie? Is it stupid to take the tie off when taking food? VPs told me it would be "less formal" but I have no idea what it means... Of course lunch is less formal than panel interview in the office! What do you think?

Normally, I tie my ties and store them in my closet already pre-tied so when I have to put them on, I just loosen and tighten the smaller end. Saves time and it looks good. A lot of people I know tie and untie their ties every time they wear them. What's the point of this? I don't understand the benefit.

Will be starting as an IBD analyst with a BB soon. Are Geoffrey Beene dress shirts fine to wear? Also, what brands of ties would you recommend that are a good value (e.g. no more than $30 when on sale/clearance)?

I recently received a light blue burberry tie as a gift. I know it's not a good idea to wear things with an obvious designer pattern (e.g. Hermes or LV or Gucci) as a junior analyst but would this be over the top? http://g.nordstromimage(dot)com/imagegallery/store/product/Gigantic/8/_… As you can see, the Burberry check pattern is visible, but it isn't in the ubiquitous tan/red/white pattern. Should I wear it or is it too obnoxious?

I'm thinking about launching a small collection of the bow tie. But I'm struggling a little bit about the price. How much would you feel that was fair for a tie or bow tie?

Hey guys, don't really need help dressing just a quick question. Can anyone recommend any good clothing stores specifically for shirts and ties in NYC? Similar to brook brothers or Charles Trywhitt and prefer slim fit.
