Monday @Mentions October 28, 2013

We're doing something a little different on Mondays starting today. With the exploding size of our community and the new functionality built into the site, we are now able to publicly recognize individual monkeys who contribute to WSO in a meaningful way and tip you off to great content you may have missed. Allow me to introduce Monday @Mentions. This will be the post where we call out those monkeys who were most excellent in a variety of categories over the previous week. At first, this is going to be a lot more art than science, so I'm asking you guys to help me out and let me know if I've missed anyone. Let's rock and roll:

Thread of the Week:

Really no contest here, as @Nefarious- killed it with Coffee Is for Closers. This screed against the entitlement mentality really resonated with you guys, and it racked up a staggering 21 Silver Bananas and 40 Facebook Likes. Beast mode.

Best Comment:

@Cruncharoo knocked it out of the park with this epic illustration about life in minor league hockey in response to @Pinkpoloshorts thread A Day in the Life: Professional Baseball Player.

Honorable mention in the comment category this week goes to @baystcheese for succinctly pointing out that, "If the Tampa Hard Rock Cafe was a person it would be Guy Fieri." in @CRE's thread Steven Cohen Pays Guy Fieri $100,000 To Be His Friend.

The Professor:

This category is for the thread or comment that teaches us all something worthwhile. This will be a tough one to pick every week, as so many of you write really helpful stuff. One thread really stood out in this category over the past week, though, and it was On the Job With Simple As… My Research Process written by @"Simple As...". The post outlined not only his research strategy, it also listed a variety of resources to help you develop your own. It was extremely well-written and informative, and it garnered 10 Silver Bananas and 6 Facebook Likes. Well done, Professor!

Guidance Counselor:

This is the category for best career advice. This week it goes to @onemanwolfpack for A Guide for Switching From Commercial Banking to Investment Banking, which pulled in 7 Silver Bananas and a Facebook Like.

Most Active Monkeys:

These primates are in a hurry to climb the evolutionary ladder: @Ambani racked up 217 banana points over the past week to take the top spot, with @notthehospitalER (134) and @"Discounted Cash Bro" (112) nipping at his heels.

Rocky Balboa:

We won't have this category every week, as it is reserved for the success stories of those who beat the odds to break into the business. This week the clear winner is @CrashDavis12 with his post The best informational interview one could ask for! Say what you will about how much easier athletes have it than us mere mortals, but this is a guy who turned what was supposed to be an informational interview over the phone into a face-to-face that became a job offer in less than five hours. Well done, Rocky.

Welcome Back!

This category is for our older more seasoned members who may have been on hiatus but have found their way back to WSO. @Marcus_Halberstram has been a key member of WSO for nearly six years now, so it's good to see him back in both the comment sections and on his own threads like Buy Equity in a Professional Athlete.

Where's Waldo?

This is the category where we send out a search party for great users who've gone missing. By using the @ callout function, they'll know we're looking for them. So where y'at @CompBanker , @"Mis Ind", and (brace yourselves for this one) @"Midas Mulligan Magoo"?

That's it for this week's @Mentions, gang. Let me know who and/or what I missed, and get out there and kill it this week!

Thanks for the mention, @Pinkpoloshorts post was great and I had a lot of fun writing that up, glad some people liked it. Really like the new monday mentions idea too.

This might start a shit storm of random mentions like the current insanely long craze on twitter of #everything! I mean we all know you #YOLO, unless you are a Buddhist and come back as a grasshopper only to be eaten by a fish.

I'm still alive. B-School is a ridiculous busy yet fun experience (Patrick can attest). Also, the member base of WSO has grown so much in quantity and quality that when I read most topics, someone else has already made the comment that I would have made.

Not all of us have to work. You know some of us are actually successful people who do things that make us happy. While I admit I am not exactly happy being stuck in the office during the sale of my company on the bright side it will be done soon and I shall be taking a several month long trip on a sail boat to places I am not sure yet.
