Industry Group vs Product Group

Hi guys,
what are the pros and cons of joining an industry group as opposed to a product group right out of business school? How do the roles of generalists and specialist differ?
I have an area of paticular interest and ideally I would like to join that group and I can see myself moving to that industry one day. However, some people believe that it's not a good idea to specialize early so.. still thinking
