Gym during work hours?

Greetings, I'm new to Finance and new to WSO.
Currently a student, with an accepted offer into RE PE for an analyst position starting in 2015.
The position I will be in will be mid-office, with hours roughly 9-6.
From your experience(s) throughout the finance industry, do you think it is acceptable to use the gym during regular work hours (for example 2pm), and then stay an extra hour or two? Obviously I wouldn't do this on day one, but X amount of months..

First off, this is much more common in banking where hours are abnormal. However, for you I'd hold off on the gym during normal hours for the first few weeks. See if anyone takes extended lunch breaks, goes to the gym, runs errands, etc. Best way to answer the question is see what your co-workers do. Additionally, once you feel comfortable you can ask your boss if this is allowed given you'll stay later to finish your work.

With those hours, I would work out either before coming in or after leaving the office in the evening. I would be concerned about ducking out midday just because you don't know what might come up or who will expect you to be at your desk.

You certainly could go midday and stay later, but as the other commentators have said, it all depends on the group and office culture. I'd give it at least a month before trying it.

Starting at 9am you could easily get a workout in during the am. You will look like a clown leaving from 2pm - 4pm (keep in mind showering/travel). This will not go over well with your firm.

Additionally, if you get out at 6 that leaves plenty of time for an evening lift

I think you are leaving early enough where you can go straight to the gym after work and still make any evening plans you might have made. That being said, if your team takes regular hour long lunches and its not emphasized that everyone on the team eats lunch together then you should be able to pull this off during lunch hours only. At my first job, corporate banking in Texas, I worked out with the other analyst on my team from 12-130 and it was not a big deal. I also know people that worked Sell Side IB and Buy Side in NYC where they were able to do this. Definitely dont take a lunch break and then an hour later take off to go workout when people are back from lunch and are in working mode again. As others have said before me, wait like a month or two to see what most people do during lunch before deciding that you are just going to leave and workout.

Salary on par with IB MO analysts, but bonus smaller (10-15 tops).

Thanks for all the advice guys. To clarify, the reason I asked was because the office building has a gym and when I interned there, some people sporadically would hit the gym middle of the day, though this wasn't too common. Even my VP did it a few times. I think it might have been a matter of deal-flow and amount of work, but in any case, being new to all of this, I just wanted to get some opinions. My commute to this office will be rather long, which is why I thought it would be convenient to use their gym. I think my best option will be to use it afterhours or before. Thanks again!

 

Why not just hit the gym right after work before you go home.

IMO, people are blowing thus up too much. Give it a month or so and see how things are, but I don't see an issue with hitting the gym in your building and eating quick at your desk when you come back, especially if you put in long hours.

 

Mon-Wed-Fri I get up at 6.40am to hit the gym and I'm usually in at work between 9am and 9.30am. I'm working banking hours as well so I don't see the problem. You just need the will to get up in the mornings. Trust me, I feel like a piece of shit after only having 5 or 6 hours of sleep and getting up at 6.30 or 7, but I feel great when leaving the gym.

 

Ok then. Whoever threw MS at me, please post some relevant studies that prove how an overly muscled physique is sexually attractive. If you're looking for that niche muscle fetish girl, continue lifting. The guys who get the most girls are tall and facially masculine. Bone size matters more than things you put effort into, such as large muscle.

I don't work banking hours, but I tend to work out after work with mornings spend doing CFA prep. Investing in a good pre-workout and using it carefully will help with post-work exhaustion.

Ive been in ER for 2 years- answer is it depends on the team. As with all other lifestyle issues in ER, all depends on your boss.

As a junior you would tend not to go during the day, but once the market is shut you can normally go no problem unless obviously you are rushing to publish a note, have results etc. But depends on the teams attitude. Plenty of people will just go for an hour during the day - in ER people are travelling all the time anyway marketing or in meetings so no-one would notice apart from your team.

 

I try to go a few times a week after work. Since my sector has heavy news flow it's a bad idea to stay away from the desk too long during market hours. I'm also in the office around 7am so waking up at 5am to workout isn't too appetizing.

 

Can't speak to hedge funds in general, but where I work everyone goes to the gym about 3/4 of the way through their day or so.

I would guess it would vary by firm. Once you have a job you should be able to get a better sense of when you can work out. Just use common sense and be willing to make some sacrifices in your schedule/routine.

 

Depends on the strategy of the HF but generally speaking you'd be better off to go before you get to your desk or after markets close.

I've never been a big fan of lunch workouts, tried it a couple times, never really worked well. here's what I've found:

  1. you limit your workouts to bj gaddour type stuff (20-30 minutes of HIIT, no weightlifting, little time for abs, no sports, no time to run, bike, or swim, etc.). which if that's your cup of tea, great. but I find it hard to stay engaged if I'm not varying what I do.

  2. because you're doing HIIT, you will be sweaty, drenched in sweat actually. no matter how good shape you're in, the body takes time to recover. when I worked out at lunch, I'd think I'm cooled down, but my heart would still be at 80-100bpm after showering and changing, and putting on longsleeve shirts and dress pants after a lift is a recipe for a swampy afternoon at the office. I wouldn't look like george costanza during that episode where he ordered the kung pao, but the reality wasn't that far from it.

  3. you'll have time constraints. if your gym is in the same building as you (unlikely), allow 5-10 min to walk there, change in the lockerroom, and get to the workout area. allow 20-30 min to exercise, and then you have to shower again. I'm bald, so I'd do this in 5-10 min to get clean and changed again. If you style your hair, add another 5min. that's 35-50 minutes of a 1 hour lunch break, and you haven't even eaten yet. the clock is working against you.

all of this assumes it's not earnings season and you actually get to leave during lunch. if I were you, I'd suck it up and workout before work or go after.
