Let me rephrase the question...

What is the job outlook for becoming an equity research analyst given that the investment banking industry, or wall street as a whole, is experiencing reformation?

Big fan of the reformation

Big fan of the reformation term. Here's what we have known for awhile. Equity research since the introduction of the Chinese Wall has become almost a loss leader for banks. Also, the quality of the research has declined, very few sell-side analysts have a massive amount of experience in the space they cover anymore. Many of the best analysts have left the sell-side and gone on to HFs. I would expect more cutbacks.

sell-side research is going

sell-side research is going down from the bank consolidation. it will still be there for trade generation.

buy-side research is here to stay, but with so many funds expected busting this year, its shaky as well.
