Wrestling with Spam Filter
Hey guys, after wrestling with Mollom spam filter (which was way too sensitive) my developer has found a way to configure it so that admins, mods AND Certified Users are now not subject to any filter (Marcus, sorry we didnt get to this / find this fix earlier).
It still does not solve the issue for authenticated users that are reliable users and want to swear as much as they want, etc...so we are still developing another way to make it so users over a certain banana count are also not subject to Mollom's whim.
Sorry for all the inconvenience and slow/ part time solution...unfortunately, whenever we turn Mollom off we get an avalanche of spam hitting the forums...
Thanks,
Patrick
What's with all the Newport Cigarette spam I have to get rid of every day? I find it hard to believe that WSO readers are the target demographic for Newports. Just sayin'.
The spam filter just caught about 20 spam comments for Newports...so think it's doing a good job.
Still don't get why my name triggers the filter...
Is there a way to set a minimum Monkey Level acheived before factoring in the Silver Bananna/Monkey Shit total and use that as a minimum for being excluded from the spam filter?
yeah, we plan on doing this next...we will set a minimum threshold (like 30 or 100 bananas) before a user can be free from the spam filter.
The spam filter was an awesome idea, it's good to see all the kinks getting worked out so quickly.
unfortunately it kept blocking Marcus who is one of our best users of all time and he seems to have left us as a result. We made it now so Certified users aren't filtered at all so it's been fixed for him, but likely too little too late which sucks. Hopefully he comes back - I'll send him a PM.
Yea, I saw that post, I'm going to PM him, too. Maybe if enough of us Prospectives and Monkeys flood his inbox with "come back, don't leave us" he'll stay.
Patrick, the spammers are already ahead of you on this. Forums tried doing this a couple of years ago and the determined spammers will simply put up 50 blank posts overnight to get past it. Having a 14 day waiting period would be a better deterrent.
Ideally, come up with a proprietary evaluation of posting history. Someone who comes in and makes 33 posts over the course of three or four days is obviously human; someone who joins today, puts up exactly 30 posts in fifteen seconds the day before he meets the time threshhold to post links is probably a robot.
Bear in mind that you're dealing with folks not trying to sell products but to acquire google pagerank so they show up on the first page of searches. They're probably willing to devote a couple hours to get their links up here for the next reindexing, especially if this is a PR 7+ site.
haha, way ahead? We are and will continue to kick their ass. Mollom is an extremely powerful spam blocker because it pools reporting across thousands of sites (IPs, links, etc). Unfortunately, it has shown over the last few weeks to be a bit too sensitive at times and has blocked normal users, swear words, etc.
So here's what I'm saying. The spam filter will still be used on ANY new users, etc which will make it very easy to identify and block spammers since their comments will get queued 99.999% of the time. We will block these users, report and delete the comments to Mollom.
For the veteran users, say 100 bananas+, we allow them to post.. That way, even if some spammer wants to sit there and post 100 blank comments overnight (when we still have moderators around), we will likely still identify them -- because that is just weird....and I would argue very easy to identify.
Am I missing something?
Also, we are PR5 -- not great but still high enough for spammers to take some time to get their links (temporarily) through if they are willing to spend a lot of time
i like the current one :(
@blastoise: I thought the current one was why I hadn't seen any of your posts lately... ;)
@Patrick: How do we go about becoming moderators? I usually read just about every post in the main forums and I'd like to help out with the spam. Also, have you thought about creating a "Community Rep" type of position? The silver stars are generally understood to be people who work in the industry, but maybe make the best of the best Community Reps. Guys like ANT, Edmundo, monty, CB, Marcus, happy, Midas, Illini, CaptK have been posting their asses off with quality posts for a while and it seems to me that they represent this community just as well as you and your team does. Just a thought.
I hate those spam filters. Especially because half the time you can't even read what they want you to re-type. After the second failed attempt I usually just give up and don't bother posting.
edit: irony....I had to retype 3 times to post this. Fucking annoying.
I will admit, I have been posting less since the new spam program. Call me lazy, but it's much more of a hassle to post knowing I have to scroll down and fill out the word verification.
p.s., ever since that annoying drop down Mock Interview ad at the top started, it doesn't automatically scroll down to the word verification, making me even less likely to post.
