Please describe the interview / hiring process.
My interview process with BMO Capital Markets began when HR reached out to me about an opportunity in Sales & Trading. Since I was already working at BMO, the initial communication was smooth and straightforward, and HR scheduled an in-person interview with senior leaders. I met with both a Vice President and a Director together in one session. The interview started with a walk-through of my resume, where they asked about my background, specific experiences, and how those prepared me for a role on the trading floor. They also wanted to understand my motivation, pressing me on “Why BMO?” and “Why Sales & Trading?” Beyond the fit questions, they tested my technical knowledge, asking me to pitch a trade idea and discuss concepts related to corporate bonds, as well as some broader market-related prompts. The tone was challenging but fair—they wanted to see how I thought through problems and handled pressure.

Overall, I came away with a very positive impression of the people and culture. The VP and Director were professional yet approachable, and they seemed genuinely interested in my reasoning and communication style, not just whether I got the “right” answer. It reinforced my view that BMO’s trading floor values collaboration, intellectual curiosity, and calm problem-solving under pressure. For future candidates, my advice would be to know your resume in depth, prepare a clear and defensible trade idea, review fixed income fundamentals like bond spreads and pricing, and practice articulating your motivation for both the bank and the role. Most importantly, treat the interview like a two-way conversation, confidence, curiosity, and composure under pressure go a long way.
