Caldwell & Orkin, Inc. (“C&O”) is an Atlanta-based registered investment advisor whose roots date back to 1948 when H. Eugene Caldwell began his career in investment management. At that time he was employed at what is today SunTrust Company. In 1953 Gene associated with Louis Montag, and later became one of the two name partners at Montag & Caldwell, another Atlanta-based investment counsel firm.

Gene left Montag & Caldwell in 1977 to pursue a new style of managing money which combined market timing with stock selection. He joined Oppenheimer Capital in New York where he was able to put his techniques to work. It was at Oppenheimer during the summer of 1983 that Michael Orkin first became associated with Gene. Michael worked directly under Gene as an analyst during the summer while in graduate school at the University of Chicago, and he helped Gene further develop the Multifactor Decision Making Process – Gene’s approach to money management. Previously, Michael had worked with Ned Davis (a former “Wall Street” elf) at Ned Davis Research and with Joe McNay of Essex Investment Management.

In February 1986, Gene and Michael joined an investment counsel firm in Atlanta. There they managed portfolios in the style founded on Gene’s longstanding belief that no one investment discipline works all of the time; rather, different market environments require a dynamic, yet disciplined, investment focus – a style and methodology of money management Gene had employed since 1977. Gene and Michael eventually bought the firm, and renamed it Caldwell & Orkin, Inc.

Gene retired in 1993, and Michael Orkin became the sole owner and managing principal of Caldwell & Orkin, Inc. C&O manages amutual fund, a hedge fund and separately-managed accounts. To this day, Michael and his associates continue to use the style of management predicated on the concepts learned from Gene Caldwell.
