Presentation
Please describe the interview / hiring process.
I did zero networking with the firm beforehand and applied to the job posting on the school job board and was fortunate enough to be selected for a first round (on-campus) interview. The on-campus interview itself was incredibly laid back - I was interviewed by an MD who was more interested in "fit" and assumed my accomplishments and GPA told him what he needed to know regarding my technical competence. It was a very conversational interview and I had the opportunity to get a lot of MY questions answered - and I had quite a few questions because I knew very little about the firm going into that interview. Ordinarily, that might be detrimental, but my genuine interest combined with the fact that it's a boutique MM bank that's not especially well-known might have mitigated the effects of my ignorance. A couple days later (two or three), I was invited to their offices for a superday the following Friday - flew out the morning of, and then spent the day interviewing with analysts, associates, MD's, and got some face time with the owner. All in all, about 7 or 8 interviews. The interviews with the analysts and associates were fairly technical and were typically conducted by a team of two analysts or 1 analyst and 1 associate, while the interviews with the senior guys were typically one-on-one and geared towards determining what kind of person I was and if I would fit with the firm culture. There was also a case study component - basically just spreading some comps and then presenting it to two associates and MD - which wasn't especially difficult, although the time constraint makes it a little interesting. After the interviews were done, the interviewees were taken out for a happy hour, then dinner, then a hilarious night on the town. Got the offer at the beginning of the following week.
