Please describe the interview / hiring process.
I initially heard about the position through the company's on-campus recruiting efforts. I applied by posting an application along with my resume on my university's job recruiting website. Interviews were granted to 5-10 applicants based primarily on academic record (GPA, applicable major such as Finance or Accounting, and classes taken). There was a 3.0 minimum GPA requirement. Recruiters look for involvement in extracurricular activities and place additional emphasis on leadership positions that the applicant held. They also like to see that the applicant had a challenging undergrad course load.
The first interview was a 1 on 1 session that took place in-person on my university campus. The interview was conducted by a senior GE leader who was a former graduate of the FMP program. The interview questions were mostly behavioral. The interviewers will almost always ask the applicant to describe situations in which they demonstrated leadership qualities or had to overcome a challenging team environment - as well as the situation's outcome. Integrity is emphasized constantly at GE and there will be a question that requires the applicant to describe an ethical dilemma and the way that they handled it. There were virtually no technical questions and the interview lasted about 30 minutes.
The second round for me consisted of a 30 minute phone interview with two HR reps that oversee the FMP program at GE Capital. The interview questions were virtually identical to the questions in the first round and seemed to be more of a formality than anything else. However most candidates applying in the September/October time frame will be flown out to GE Capital's headquarters in Norwalk, CT for a full day of second round interviews. An offer is conditioned upon passing a background check and a drug test.
Most interviewers are very friendly and engaging during the interviews. They value honesty, integrity, demonstrated leadership abilities, and the willingness to relocate or travel. Do your homework on the company as you would with any interview and be sure to ask at least 3-4 questions throughout the interview.
