I applied for the Financial Engineering Intern position at Huatai Securities through online submission. The process was fairly straightforward and consisted of one round of interview, conducted 1-on-1 over the phone with the team’s mentor.

The interview lasted about 30–40 minutes. It started with brief introductions, followed by a discussion of my previous experience in quantitative research and programming (mainly Python, data analysis, and fixed income modeling). The mentor asked both technical and behavioral questions—for example, how I handled data cleaning, how I built and validated quantitative factors, and how I would optimize backtesting efficiency. The atmosphere was professional but conversational.

No additional HR or second-round interviews were required. The mentor later provided feedback and next steps directly. Overall, the process was efficient, technical, and research-oriented, focusing more on practical problem-solving and project experience rather than brain-teaser or case questions.
Interview Questions
One of the most challenging questions was a technical one related to correlation clustering on a 5,000-dimensional matrix. The interviewer asked how I would approach reducing the dimensionality and identifying meaningful clusters among highly correlated variables. It required not only understanding of matrix operations and computational efficiency, but also familiarity with practical techniques such as PCA, hierarchical clustering, and distance metrics optimization.
