Company Details

Founded in 1999, Kapor Capital is a venture capital investment arm of the Kapor Center for Social Impact in Oakland, CA. Kapor's investment focus has evolved over the years, to focus on seed early stage tech startups that generate positive social impact. Kapor invests in gap-closing companies revolutionising fields in education, health, family, communication, consumer finance, urban planning, logistics, agriculture and transportation. These companies either close gaps of access and opportunity for underserved communities or involve a disruptive democratization of a sector.

Kapor prides itself in diversifying its portfolio:
18 out of 39 investments (46%) have a founder who is a woman or a person of color from an underrepresented background;
31% of our first-time investments have a female founder of any background; and
23% of our first-time investments have a founder of a racially underrepresented background.

Kapor typically makes somewhere between 20-25 new seed investments per year, and the average cheque size is between $100k-$250k.

Notable investments include: Birdi, Bit.ly, Clever, CodeHS, EdCast, Engrade (acquired by McGraw Hill), Fundly, Gojee (acquired by XO Group), Mailbox (acquired by Dropbox), Novoed, Piazza, Uber, Visual.ly, Wepow and WorkAmerica.
