Please describe the interview / hiring process.
It started with a phone interview, just to gauge interest for both parties. Fairly straightforward, classic "get to know you" type of stuff. Explained the role, added a little more info specific to public finance in this specific metro area.
Advanced to a second round interview with 2 VP's of public finance. They also asked the classic questions getting to know me, and dug into the specifics of some work I had done. Very conversational across the board. I found it useful to bring up experience/ work / schoolwork you have done to help drive the conversation, both of the VP's seemed to appreciate that.
Advanced to a conversation with the 2 managing directors for the public finance group. I really enjoyed the conversation, and again found it very conversational and easy to lead the conversation based on work/ experience. This might be a bit canned for me specifically though, as I just completed a project that was very public finance orientated. That said, I got the impression they were really more focused on the quality of an applicant - both from general intelligence to emotional intelligence - as opposed to someone who would know exactly what they were doing from day 1. They were not afraid to train someone basically is what I'm trying to say.
After this I received an invitation to do a modeling assignment. It was a pretty straightforward excel problem that required me to run through a bond issue, cash flow, debt service ect. and things that would be required for the job. They kept it fairly open ended and invited me to be creative in how I looked and presented information. They had set it up as though I was preparing this for a new client, so I did some extra creative stuff outside of excel which I felt would speak to my personality and knowledge of the subject. They said I had 24 hours upon receiving the assignment to return in, and that it should take around 90 minutes. This was accurate, if I went quickly I could have easily done it in that timeframe. However, seeing that they gave me 24 hours to return it, I took extra time to make it nice, a little more quantitatively impressive, and add a few extra touches. I turned it in about 3.5 hours after receiving it, and I didn't get any negative comments about it, and moved onto the next round.
After that I met in person for coffee (everything else was zoom -except the first interview which was phone). I think they really just wanted to size me up in person, which was good as I also wanted to size them up. It was straightforward, and very conversational like the other discussions.
