Please describe the interview / hiring process.
I interviewed with a Cubist quantitative research team within Point72. I applied directly by email. The process included an initial interview, a time-limited take-home research exercise, and a follow-up technical discussion. The first interview was conversational. After a brief introduction, we discussed my academic background, previous projects, and internship experience. Technical questions covered topics related to the coursework listed on my resume, including statistics and machine learning. There were also probability and expected-value problems with follow-up variations, where explaining the reasoning was important. I had time to ask questions about the role and discuss my research interests. The later stages focused on how I approached a research problem, justified modeling choices, and evaluated results. The follow-up discussion emphasized statistical intuition, model assumptions, and whether conclusions would hold outside the development sample. The interviewer was approachable. I would recommend knowing your resume thoroughly and practicing clear explanations of modeling assumptions, validation choices, and limitations.
