Please describe the interview / hiring process.
The Superday interview process I experienced was quite unique. Approximately 20 students were invited for in-person interviews, suggesting a very competitive acceptance rate. The interviewers consisted of junior bankers and some directors/VPs. The focus was primarily on behavioral questions, industry trends, and general market discussion. The overall tone was conversational, and in one interview, the interviewer seemed to have no pre-planned questions at all. Notably, there were no traditional technical questions involving DCF, LBO, or financial modeling. However, a strong understanding of technical energy concepts, particularly in oil and gas, was crucial. While not explicitly technical, interviewers could easily gauge your knowledge and interest in the sector. For example, one interviewer presented a map outlining Russia and Ukraine (scaled to relative size) and used this as a springboard for discussing the war and its impact. They also delved into other current events, often spending 10+ minutes on a single topic. Therefore, it's essential to only bring up subjects you can discuss in detail, as they will explore them thoroughly.

The Superday consisted of roughly four rounds, each typically involving two interviewers. However, it was common for one interviewer to leave early for client calls. My interviews were primarily behavioral and conceptual, with no traditional technical questions.

It's crucial to remember interviewer names, as they will ask about your experience with each of them. The final interviewer even asked who my favorite interviewer was. The conversations covered a wide range of topics, including personal background, sports, travel, favorite Houston restaurants (likely a local question), current events, details from my resume, favorite and least favorite classes, why I chose my school, the most challenging aspect of being an analyst, why energy, why banking, why not the buyside, why Houston, the percentage of the S&P represented by energy, which sector dominates the S&P, the Russia/Ukraine map question, problems facing the energy industry, why tech has higher valuations than energy, the best part of college, other interviews/Superdays/offers, thoughts on ESG, hobbies, favorite TV shows, favorite M&A deal, BB vs. EB vs. MM, why RJ, energy discounting vs. other industries, and more.
