Group Exercise – Project Finance Task
I participated in a group-based project finance exercise where we were given a scenario involving the evaluation of a large-scale infrastructure project. As a team, we analysed the project’s financial viability, key risks, potential mitigants, and overall bankability. The task required collaborative decision-making, clear communication, and the ability to justify recommendations under time pressure.
One-to-One Case Study – ESG Financial Analysis
In the individual case study, I completed an ESG-focused financial analysis of several companies. This involved reviewing provided materials, assessing each company’s environmental, social, and governance performance, and determining how their ESG profiles could influence credit risk, long-term sustainability, and potential financing decisions. I then presented my findings and recommendations to the interviewer, demonstrating my analytical thinking and ability to articulate insights effectively.
One-to-One Competency Interview
The final stage was a competency-based interview assessing my motivation for the role, understanding of SMBC’s business, and alignment with the bank’s values. I discussed past experiences that showcased skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, resilience, and stakeholder communication.
It required me to outline, on the spot, the key components of a project finance structure — including risk allocation, SPV setup, contractual framework, cashflow waterfall, security package, and the roles of different stakeholders. The question was unexpected in its depth, and it tested both my technical understanding and my ability to think clearly under pressure.
Industrial Placement Interview
Started off with simple questions from a sheet on why SMBC, why is client service important. Then got onto more conversational topics. Vibe was a little off and I didn't feel as if they tested my technical knowledge.
Intern Interview - Investment Banking
Superday was 5 interviews, roughly 30 mins each
